The idea of perspective is just interesting all by itself. It's every side of every issue, each side as eager to prove itself the more desirable, each side with equal or perhaps lesser merit. But whom is victorious? Usually the one deemed right by either twelve strangers, or by popular belief or opinion. Which doesn't necessarily always make the perspective right, just popular. And on occasion, even what's popular is deemed an unhealthy perspective, regardless of how much support it has. In short, perspective is vast and determined by many things. Perspective can be shared, or debunked all at the same time. I'm going to relate to you stories i've read/heard that are known to get different perspective from anyone that reads or hears them. Keep that in mind, I never wrote these, I read/heard about them. Without further ado...
There was a Husband and a Wife that lived happily together in their small home, and made just enough money to survive the day to day grind. They lived far away from many of their relatives, but had numerous friends in their neighborhood and at their jobs. Mediocrity was fine for them, as long as they had each other. One day, the Wife began to get violently ill which had her husband concerned. He took her to the hospital, but was told the Medicine she would need would cost well beyond what he was able to pay. However, the company that manufactured the medicine was located a few miles away from his home. So he decided the next day, he would try to gather all the money he could and go straight to the company and try to get some medicine for his wife. The next day came, and his wife was getting worse. He asked his neighbors to donate what they could, explaining his wife was very sick, he asked some coworkers and even people he had never met before. He was able to raise quite a bit of money, but only half the amount he would need to purchase the medicine. With his wife getting worse by the second, he decided he would go to the company anyway, and try to bargain for the medicine.
When he got to the company he explained himself to many of the workers and to the people in charge. He explained how his wife was sick, and how he had raised half the amount of money and desperately needed the medicine. They told him they felt bad for him, however, he would have to pay like everybody else. He was devastated, and made his way back home. When he returned his wife was still in very bad condition, and he knew it was only a matter of time before she would die. So he decided that night, he would break into the company and steal some of the medicine. He was successful, except he didn't know he was seen on camera. He quickly got home and gave his wife the medicine, and the next morning she was doing much better. Then came a knock at the door, it was the police. He was arrested for theft and breaking in entering and sent to jail. Some of his friends no longer called him friend, but called him criminal. Others knew they would've done the same thing in his shoes.
I recall when I first heard this story, many of the people in class were saying he was in the right and he should've been let free. A few said that in fact he was a criminal, and deserved to be incarcerated. Some were saying the man didn't put forth enough effort to get money. Whatever the case, he still tried, and for most people that is too hard to do.
My view on it? I think that in his mind what he did was right, regardless of what a few invisible restrictions said wasn't right. As Johnny Depp said in the character he played in Blow (a drug dealer) "All I did was bring some plants across an imaginary line." The man thought himself faced with no other alternative, he tried going by the book, but he had exhausted its use. So he did what he could, despite the consequence, so that he could ensure the one he loved lived. He didn't do it for money, and he didn't do it as some sort of revenge tactic, he did it so that his wife would live. And it is that reason I think he was in the right, I agree it was a crime. Just not the sort of crime that should be associated with someone who robs a bank, or steals a car.
"In any compromise between food and poison, it is only death that can win. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit."
There's another story i'm going to relate to you, a story about a hermit that lived in the hills near a small town. This hermit lived a sheltered life the majority of his life, he hardly ever went down to the town for anything, he grew his own food and made his own clothes. The people of the town knew about him, but never bothered him. One day, this man came out to the town and started preaching to the people. He started telling them he had been talking with God throughout the years, and God told him that now, was the time for him to spread the word to everyone else. Everyday, people would go to him for guidance, he would preach to them the word of the Lord and the entire town was happy. This went on for a few months, and then God told the man he needed to spread the word in the nearby big city. He told his followers that's what they had to do. So, a few days later, a bunch of the towns people and the Hermit took a trip to the big city and started parading around preaching the word of God. A few hours later, him and his followers were arrested, and the Hermit was diagnosed as Schizophrenic and sent to a mental institution.
Here are the facts, the man boosted an entire towns moral, preached the word of God, and did what he could to help others. He wanted to further spread this word to as many people as he could, so he went to a more densely populated place and began to preach there as well. His crime? Being schizophrenic. Was he in the wrong? Perhaps, but also perhaps not. Had this been a few hundred or thousand years ago, the man probably would've been considered a prophet, and would've been well respected. However, people that claim they hear voices or the Word of God are considered crazy by todays standards. Perhaps that's a good thing, perhaps it's not. Just consider if Jesus were to really come back or a second son of God were to be produced. If he went around performing miracles and preaching to people about different things, what would people do to him? Would they mock him, or embrace him? I know the man in the story was not Jesus, however, he was only doing what in his mind was the right thing. What, if you will, was right according to his perspective. What do I think? I think him being jailed was a common thing to do, and might've been the right thing. I mean after all, we've all heard of a little thing called heavens gate. (for those who haven't http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavens_Gate). Potentially, who knows how many followers the man could've gained, and maybe "God" would've told him he was throwing a party up in heaven but they needed to shed themselves of their humanity first to get there.
Which is possible, however not necessarily probable. In either case, the man initially did nothing wrong, but was sent away because of the potential amount of wrong which he could've committed. Which was a just action by the people handling the case. At least, as far as their perspective was concerned.
You might be wondering why i'm writing about this, and it's simple, I work fast food. (in before you work fast food fuck you minus 2 die). When you work fast food, you deal with every kind of person you can imagine, rich, poor, well off, middle class, working class etc.. etc.. You'll probably never get the uber rich, or the Bill Gates kind of people there. But you will get the kind of people that make more money in one day, than I probably make in one paycheck. Each one of these people with their own perspective, their own rational thought on how long a burger should take, how fresh a fry is and what a clean lobby really looks like. And then, there's the company standard.
According to our companies standard, a fry can remain fresh for up to five minutes after it leaves the fryer. This period of time is automatically monitored as soon as the fries are picked up from the fryer. Not by a human hand, but by an automatic timer. For some people, the fry isn't fresh unless it is straight from the oil, to their mouths. Which is why, even if a fry is three minutes old, a customer or two will complain and want "Fresh Fries" Even though our company determined what fresh was by doing surveys, having people taste test this food as it aged from minute to minute, conducting research on how hot or cold people like their food and etc.. to determine what fresh was. So the question is, is the person who thinks that a three minute old fry is not fresh wrong, or, are the millions of dollars of research conducted, people polled, and taste surveys conducted wrong?
The answer...
The company.
You honestly wouldn't think that, but you have to understand the so called Golden Rule, "The Customer is Always Right." Which is kind of strange when you think about it, in the face of research done for years and years, countless studies, actual customers asked what they preferred, that one minuscule percent that you can never please, still has to be pleased regardless of whatever policy. Because of the (some what) trickle down theory. You piss off one person, they tell their friends "NEVER EAT THERE!" they do it anyways, and tell their friend "HOLY SHIT YOU WERE RIGHT LETS WARN EVERYONE!" and so on and so on, you lose money, and have to start cutting hours and before you know it you're out of a job. It usually comes down to, whatever restaurant is willing to whore out their employees for the lowest wage.
But here's another fact you probably didn't know, and to all those currently working fast food, this is worth knowing. I read in a sociology book of mine a while back, that customers don't see fast food employees as human. They just see them as part of some intricate machine that magically produces their food. Which makes sense from my perspective, considering how insane people get over food, going as far as to threaten someones life or get into fights over it (i'm not joking). When something doesn't go their way, they react as if they would hit a television. And i'm sure some of you are saying "Well they deserve it!" or whatever. But facts are facts, they're still human even if some of them are truly the scum of the earth (trust me a few of them are.)
In summary, perspective is based on many things and factors. Where you grew up, what you were taught growing up, your race, your creed, your sex, all factors determining how you're going to view the world. I know, nothing you don't already know. But all things we sometimes fail to take into consideration when someone doesn't agree with us on something. Which is why working fast food gives you a strange insight that you can't understand until you're in their shoes. I'm not saying that in any way i'm special, but what I am saying is, the kind of people that you consider intelligent, the kind of people you turn to for help, are sometimes the most illogical and inane people when it comes to ordering food. What I mean by that is, they'll often times use flawed logic and reasoning to try and get what they want. When in a day to day situation, they're against such things. I learned the value of perspective the hard way, I had an idea before I started working fast food, but after a good year of it, it really sinks in.
Thank you for Reading.

Damn, this is some effort right here!
Enjoyable post. I can't stand Richard Dawkins though. Mainly because every 20 year old college kid who thinks he's being all rebellious by "rejecting religion" quotes that damn "God Delusion" likes it's the... the what? oh that's right, the Bible.
For the record, the rabbits have already discussed the whole perception vs. reality bit.

Perspective ass hat, In your opinion the way someone orders food may be inane or illogical but to them its not.
did you miss the point of your whole fucking story?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And also, when people are trying to debate with you over what's fresh, or how their food should be, they're (usually) not friendly at all. Which at times can be understandable, however there usually isn't a need for it as they can be a bit over the top. I recall a time when this new guy was working grill and he had gotten these peoples burgers wrong, but to be honest the only thing really wrong with the burgers was, he put bacon on the wrong one. Other than that they were perfectly fine, but they were above taking the bacon off one sandwich and placing it on another. The guy came up to me with an angry constipated look, the woman was flailing around screaming and walking in and out the door saying "WE DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS BULLSHIT!" The guy was trying to talk to me like I was in the third grade (in before that's probably because you're still there seriously). When they finally got their food, their remade burgers, they demanded a whole bunch of crap for time wasted and then wanted our managers numbers so they could complain further.
But just consider the fact that all that was really wrong was bacon was put on the wrong sandwich, to me that's no big deal, and if it had been me i'd of just taken the other persons bacon and put it on my burger. However to them, this was a giant mistake. And just for further clarification, they didn't state having an allergy for bacon, if they did they'd of demanded much more crap and been way more pissed off and would have told me all about how if they would've eaten the burger as it was, they'd of died.

Illogical, I only say that because I did state at the end that
"In summary, perspective is based on many things and factors. Where you grew up, what you were taught growing up, your race, your creed, your sex, all factors determining how you're going to view the world. I know, nothing you don't already know. But all things we sometimes fail to take into consideration when someone doesn't agree with us on something."
As I stated, though I may not agree with them, or think what they say or do is inane or illogical, usually it is because I fail to realize their perspective, however, I usually do not have time to rationalize my thoughts as sudden debates on what is fresh and what isn't happen and are over within a few minutes span. Usually, after i'm done calling them an asshole or whatever, i'll think to myself that who knows what was up with them, perhaps they had a bad day or perhaps in their minds eye fresh was from the oil to their mouths.
I think you didn't analyze the story enough. But that's just my perspective.
