A human mind is shaped by its personal choices and experiences. The heart is revealed through the very windows from which the mind develops. A person's physical form is the carrier for that which they make memories with.
Many times I have seen and heard friends reminiscing. They sit by each other, quiet in familiarity. Occasionally, a shared memory will surface. "Remember that time," and a memory formed long ago is shared again, the experience relived briefly in their hearts.
What kind of memories do you make with your mind? Can you more easily recall the last smile you saw on your mothers face, or the content of the most recent Pepsi commercial?
Your life can only hold so many memories, as they flow alongside time into your soul. The cup of your life is filled with what you put into it. Once your organic connection to that which you form memories with is no more, your cup is full. You can take nothing out, nor put anything in. And the One who gave you this cup will see all its contents.
Who do you share memories with? Do you have more with your extended family than you have with your favorite pop star (who, by the way, wouldn't form a memory with you if they shook your hand and said your name)? The experiences you pursue most will be those ingrained deeply into your mind, most readily available for you to draw on when making a choice.
That which the mind takes in, it never releases. All experiences form memories, but not all memories can be recalled. An experience shared is a bond deepened. But how hollow is the experience that is shared with the faceless? What bond do you form with messages from others you will never meet?
An incomprehensible mass of messages swarm us, now, like never before in the history of humanity. Like flies to the snare of a spiders trap, information draws us to the digital web. A world wide network of anonymous messages plagues much of the planet.
Video games, movies, and music are all packaged memories, intended to be experienced at the discretion of whoever pays for them. Your cup fills with every passing minute you are conscious. What are you filling your cup with?
The mystery of the unconscious may not be ours to know, but a third of your life will be spent this way. Wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that the mind you form in your waking hours is the mind that forms your subconscious dreams? It's your cup you are filling, and though you may occasionally splash or be splashed on, how it's filled is determined primarily by you.
For all but One, the appeal of immediate gratification, the temptation of escape, or the myriad other paths to destruction have often been far stronger than the tiny voice crying out for a different path.
Who do you want to be? How you use your circumstances to make your memories will determine your result. Who do you want to make your memories with? You will identify best with those whose messages you allow into your mind.
You aren't making any memories for the TV. Who is making your memories?

No failure. No contest to begin with. But life is not solely that which we percieve. The physical brain is not the entirety of ones consciousness. Memories may be altered through a variety of methods, or even implanted and removed selectively.
There is a part of you that will last forever, and that part is not susceptible to organic interference in this life. Your experiences are yours, and the memories of your heart will never change, whether or not your brain says otherwise.

My most cherished memories, except for those involving my child, were garnered during the execution of wanton acts of self-destruction. Good times.
