Scores of suburban teenagers, slighted by the injustice of loving parents and a middle-upper class suburban lifestyle, made the hajj to Vans Warped Tour this past summer, choosing self-hating music as an alternative to just sucking it up like the rest of us.
There we stood, surrounded. My girlfriend and her friends left in order to go reminisce about 7th grade angst with Yellowcard. And then there were two. In order to justify the purchase of our tickets, we sought familiarity, which we found in two aging punk bands: The Vandals and the Circle Jerks.
First came the Vandals, whose bassist, to the pleasure of the audience, re-christened co-performers Cute Is What We Aim For, to the much less politically correct, "Cute Is What Our AIDS Is From." Also, they played "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, which should give them points in anyone's book.
Second came the Circle Jerks, another punk band who played a pretty good show.
We saw other bands, but they weren't worth mentioning. We missed Bad Religion, unfortunately. However, there's always next year to ignore.
