...or, Whooo Let The Cougars Out? (woop woopwoop woop)

My lovely wife (MLW) and I saw Def Leppard last night in Tampa. The show was at the Ford Amphitheater, an outdoor venue with canvas roof and a fair bit of lawn seating. We were in the covered section, left of center. Styx opened, then Foreigner, then Def Leppard.

Styx had the mix perfect and sounded awesome. No Tommy Shaw, though. They played a bunch of hits, but oddly they didn't play "Lady" and thankfully they didn't play "Mr. Roboto". Most of the audience was quite into the music and that helped the band connect to the younger members of the audience. About eight rows down and to our right there was this 5'-4" 160lb cougar that was screaming the lyrics of each song, waving her arms, dancing, and blocking the view. Some guys behind her asked her to sit the hell down, but she ignored them. They became a bit agitated. Closer, three slightly younger and smaller cougars right in front of us were also singing and taking pictures of themselves. One of them asked MLW to shoot them together with the stage in the background. They did the same pose they probably did as junior high school cheerleaders, 20 years ago. Pathetic, and now stored in camera memory.

Foreigner was just crap. Thin and badly mixed sound, only three original members (none of which was the singer), and I never really liked their stuff much, except maybe "Juke Box Hero". They played that song, and all their other hits. At this point the down-and-right cougar had been standing for two full sets. The usher had been sent over and told her to sit the hell down, but she refused to do so. The usher had called the house security, who also told her to sit the hell down, and again she refused. She also turned and flipped off all the people who wanted he to sit the hell down, who in turn became more agitated. An not-quite empty Starbucks cup somehow managed to fly onto her coiffure from somewhere, and she became more agitated too. The right-in-front cougars were now posing for pictures taken by and with the growing number of college boys arriving for Def Leppard. The pile of empty $10 24-oz cans of Bud Lite was growing.

Def Leppard played a bunch of songs from their later albums that I hadn't heard, plus a few hits. They weren't loud enough, especially during the requisite acoustic set, because the PA wasn't drowning out the group of drunk fratboys behind us singing every song exactly like it was on the CD. In imperfect unison and pitch. Def Leppard did offer their cover of "Rock On", which is one of the best covers of that song ever. See it here (same stage, different venue) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtyzXIw946U Their stage show was very high-tech and distracting, which is I suppose reasonable for a band with a one-armed drummer. Actual police officers arrived to speak to down-and-right cougar. There was some cheering, but it all dried up when the cops left her in her place, standing as she had been, and went up a few rows to tell the now very agitated ones to shut the fuck up, it's a concert, people stand, deal with it. In an odd turn of event, she sat down a few minutes into the Def Leppard set. Apparently standing that long is bad for her old fat ankles. A 45-year old 300 pound guy and his similarly-old and half-as-big squeeze sat down in front of the right-in-front cougars. As Def Leppard was playing their second song, these two stood up and started making out. The guy's doing the humpdance and licking her neck and she's waving her ass around with her eyes closed like she really likes it. Disgusting. The right-in-front cougars were so grossed out that they went for drinks. By the time thee got back, these two disgusting fucks had sat down, but she's sitting on the arm of the chair bouncing up and down and he's rubbing his hands all over her and sweating. Vom city. Public displays of simulated sex are not appropriate if you're over 19 years old. Period. I wanted to give them $100 so they'd go across the street to the Hard Rock Resort and get a room, but MLW suggested I not do that but instead just ignore them. She's a genius, she is.

We got a bit wet despite being in the covered seats due to the blown-in rain, but it was all in all a good time. And though neither of us are big margarita fans, we scored our Nov 3rd Jimmy Buffett tickets this morning.

Not a huge Foreigner fan, but I'd pay to see Def Leppard and Styx...

...without the cougars. :)

Sounds like you and Mrs Skrap had a hoot!

I was going to see The Police with my 17y old niece in Amsterdam next month but I won't. I will just rely on the memories I have from the concerts in '79 and '84 instead of putting myself in a similar position you and YLW were at.

Maybe if they'd played close by I'd consider to go and take MLW too but they don't.

i took my mom to see sting last mothers day... he throws a kick ass show actually.... as much energy and quality of the police of the 80's and he did all the good police tunes too

Pour some sugar on me!

A lot of guy my age are listening to 80s music like Poison, Def Leppard, Megadeath. I guess retro is just catching up, a few years ago kids were listening to Zeppelin and 70s stuff.

I guess that means my little brother will be nostalgic for Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, maybe.

My user ID is more than an order of magnetude greater than yours, but I can still say this: Ubersite is but a reflection of the real world. Change happens here and in the real world, and you either keep up or anchronate (a new word I just made up, means 'to become lost in the past'). "Uber isn't the same as it was..." sounds as lame as "Ahhhh, these kids today, with their hair and their clothes...".

You mission, should you choose to accept it, is to TAKE BACK UBERSITE! Rather than just complaining, that is.

...aaaand GO!

The down right cougar, I bet she had on an acid washed, frayed, mini skirt that was on her like sausage casing, right?! See, she kept her old mini from the 80's, when she was still a size 5. I betcha!

That show is coming to my town august 29, I considered going, but I realized the kind of show it was going to be (the one you described). I'm the kind of person that goes to a concert for straight up pit. Which is why I am going to Slayer and Marilyn Manson on September 1st. I just hope when i'm in my 30's and still a concert goer I don't have to deal with the aforementioned cougar.

Woo. Just got done swooning.

I liked those bands for about 10 minutes in 9th grade. Enjoyable read, though.

Hahahahaha

You really captured the crowd of 80's band concert goers.

The down right cougar, I bet she had on an acid washed, frayed, mini skirt that was on her like sausage casing, right?! See, she kept her old mini from the 80's, when she was still a size 5. I betcha!

Ok that's mean especially considering that I too was a teen in the 80's. I don't think I'm a cougar though since I don't have fake bake on top of 25+ years of too much tanning and I don't chase frat boys, get drunk and strip in bars on girls night out.

And I still wear the size I did in high school. No, actually one (or more depending on the clothing brand) size smaller. Ha.

Gah! More meanness. Sorry.

True I sometimes become annoyed when people tell me I'm old, since I don't consider myself that.
BUT...it's wrong to run around and think you can pull off your teens and early 20s and not look ridiculous.

And 80's fashion should never EVER be brought back for any reason other than Halloween.

Some of the music was great (and fun). Def Leppard was great. I liked Styx but they actually go back to the 70s. And Tommy was my favorite.

Hated Foreigner. Hated Hated Hated Hated.

One of Foreigner's guitarists was bald and didn't hide it. I respect that.
