We all remember the Mohammad cartoons a few years back that could arguably called inflammatory, and I am sure a lot of people would argue that US papers were right in not printing them (even though the US was still blamed for them), but where should the line be drawn when it comes to being "sensitive" to one religion?
Recently Washington Post refused to print the comic below. Can someone explain how this is inflammatory towards a reasonable person? How it is more offensive than regularly published articles on other religions? Does anyone really think this crosses some line where the paper is justified in not printing it? This comic has mocked major religious and political figures in the past, why is it now taboo to talk about one group?

Natural resources are the new religion.
Duh.

Well if green measures that tree huggers want get put into place world wide, it will cause more deaths then religious wars in the last hundred years too.
Third world countries, if constrained by "green laws" will find it even harder to gorw out of dirt farming and be able to support themselves.

Dear IndoNinja: the SuperAlter,
While I agree with the point you're trying to make here, ...
...as all about fuckin' cash...
-------------
I was hoping you were commenting on the communism being worse than religion comment, much more interesting conversation.
If the washington post (or the "left" in general in the US) is more surrounded by christians than shouldn't they be more concerned with mocking them and losing their subscriptions?
It isn't about money. It is about a slow erosion of what people feel they can and cannot say about a particular subject. If newspapers refuse to come near commenting on issues like Islam how long until it is not allowed in schools, TV and public speech. It is about them having an extra filter for anything to do with Islam. They said they showed it to muslim staffers before deciding to run it. Do you think they do the same to things that may offend christians?
You know if it was a comic that pissed off christians and it was pulled or they printed it and apoligized you would be ranting how they were crybabies (I would agree). If they printed something about christians and refused to apoligize you would support them 100%. I am baffeled by anyone who can support this double standard.

Dear IndoNinja: the SuperAlter,
While I agree with the point you're trying to make here, I must point out that very FEW satrical cartoonist of the modern day would dare attempt to mock the Born Again sects of Christianity either with the current power grip they have. Any strip that would have us laugh at "Rev. Billy Bob wranglin' a snake fer Jaysis" would be INSTANTLY pulled from a publication. Personally, I can think of no group better to be mocked or laughed at than those ignorant primates who have dedicated their existance to an imaginary man in the sky, REGARDLESS of what name they attribute to him.
I know, I know... you SAY you are convinced that we wacky Liberals only hate teh Christians, but once again: that's just who we are mostly surrounded by. Don't get me wrong, there are some neo-hippy, treehungers that want to adore everyone in their Hands-Across-America sensitivity... but not all of 'em. While I DO have a particular hate of organized religion, I'll never deny a man his faith - as long as he keeps it a private, personal thing.
That said, I don't think the issue here is ABOUT faith: it's about MONEY. Since the time of W.R. Hearst, reporting the news became less important than controling power and finance. In this century, it's even more prevelant. I don't think these papers really cared about the fact that they might offend a few Muslims... they were terrified that a few might stop BUYING that paper!!! Think about it - the sports & entertainment sections are BIGGER than the world news section anymore! These publications are marketed to the lowest common denominator reader to score the biggest sales numbers.
This was NEVER about faith, fear or sensitivity - it was all about fuckin' cash...

Berk Breathed has been one of my heroes since I was about 9 years old. The man is, quite simply, a genius.
This strip doesn't seem so inflammatory to me, but each publication has the right to decide what they do and don't want to print, and they don't have to explain or justify it to anyone. If I owned the Washington Post, there's a good possibility I may print nothing but Berk Breathed cartoons and lolcats. Then again, I'm a baby sue comix fan, so what the fuck do I know about anything.

Fuck them all. Organized religion is the largest social cancer civilization has ever encountered. When every religious freak disappears from the face of the earth, maybe the rest of us will finally be able to enjoy our lives in peace.
---------------
I could point to a few "communist" regimes that have been responsible for over 90 million deaths in the last hundred years.
USSR: 20 million deaths
China: 65 million deaths
Vietnam: 1 million deaths
North Korea: 2 million deaths
Cambodia: 2 million deaths
Eastern Europe: 1 million deaths
Latin America: 150,000 deaths
Africa: 1.7 million deaths
Afghanistan: 1.5 million deaths
Nothing to do with religion there. How many died for religion in the same time frame?
I am not trying to argue that this means all communists are a cancer and when they dissapear people will have peace because that would be short sighted, and ignorant. Just like calling religion the greatest social cancer in the world.
Any social "construct" can be twisted or used to kill and ruin peoples lives, this has been proven time and time again. Religion isn't the same as ignorance no matter how clever you think athiesm or whatever philosophy you adhere to is, and ignorance is the problem.

I don't see why the papers should ever avoid printing something just because it offends the members of some cult. Can you imagine it going the other way? Is there any topic that a religion wouldn't touch on because it might offend people who don't agree?

Perhaps the clan said it best, "Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dollar dollar bill y'all!"
I figured that as long as we're oversimplifying things, we might as well quote hip-hop from the early nineties.

Pope: I want to preach against masturbation and homosexuality, but I don't want to offend any of the homosexuals out there listening. Maybe I should just talk about Angelina Jolie's baby and the latest episode of Heroes?

I didn't think the comic was funny or offensive.
However, this is capitalism folks. The Free Market is what it is.
Newspapers (should) do what ever appeals the the demographic buying their shit. Obviously there appears to be a market for 'religious sensitivity' - or at the very least a market for 'contentious censorship of art' - either way it all comes down to satisfying the bottom line and if the publishers think they can leverage the so-called moral high-ground and still make money - more power to 'em.
-----------------------------------------
There isn't a market for religious sensitivity. They trample any non-muslim religion whenever they want. That is my problem. Not that they showed "sensetivity" but that they only show it to one group.
In reading about this Washington Post decided to show the comic to some of its muslim employees, they didn't like it so it wasn't shown. Do you really thinkt he same courtesy is extended to any other religion?
And, not funny?!?! You didn't even smirk at the end when he realized he wasn't getting laid? Maybeyou saw it coming but for me it definately zigged when I thought it would zag, which makes me laugh.

Granted. You can make fun of my grandfather wearing a turban all you want, you're entitled to, and frankly I find some of the jokes funny.
It's when someone thinks he's a Muslim radical because "ONLY MUSLIMS HAVE BEARDS AND WEAR TURBANS LOL!!11" that it becomes an issue. Our religious beliefs shouldn't have to be altered because people can't tell the difference (yes, cue the people who say Y'all look alike). The problem here is ignorance in general. Jokes are fine, but ignorance that sparks violence is something else. I'm sure you agree.
It's not just one sided. Any white guy walking around with a Ralph Lauren shirt on in the middle east will be assumed to be an American/other assumptions put on him that might spark violence.
-----------------
I am not excusing violence. It is a fact that people are judged by their appearance. Expecting the world to not make any judgements on your appearance is unrealistic. If I see someone dressed like a ghetto thug, a self-cutting emo, a camel jockey, or in a business suit I am going to treat each one different, and so will you. Not to the point of rudeness, but there will be a difference.

No, I am annoyed because itis a funny comic. I am annoyed because it is a clear double standard. That comic has discussed everything from gay marriage, masturbation, birthcontrol, chrisitans, athiests, jews, but muslims are off the table?
"The strip came in and I knew we would have to send out an alert to all the newspapers. I do that fairly regularly with materials that might pose issues for local areas. ... Before 9/11 this would have been printed, no problem. Now everybody has big sopping sandy vaginas when it comes to anything Muslim, and I am sick of it.
If you don't like strange looks don't wear a fucking turban, the same goes for jews with their silly heavy black clothes and long ass sideburns, and people celebrating their "african heritage" by wearing robes and stupid hats. If you are different you will get attention, but there is no reason it has to be positive, and I should be able to mock you as much as I want, and strips that mock them in the paper, especially goodhearted ones like this, should be allowed.

I always have trouble discerning the difference between this comic and Doonesbury. Probably because my local newspaper doesn't run either strip anymore.

if americans would stfu about 9/11 and not make such a big deal out terrorism, muslims wouldn't always targetted and percieve harmless comic strips as subtle attacks. or at least, they'd look like idiots if they would.
there are no arguments to be made in this kind of hysteria.
everybody needs stfu and take a long nap.

they're probably just being careful to avoid being lambasted and/or sued.
who the fuck cares anyway?
--------------
Because it is a double standard, and it annoys me to no end.
I really can't explain why, no it doesn't affect my day to day life but almost no changes in govt policy decisions, or in public norms does. But if left unchecked they eventually will. I don't want to wake up one day and see that I can be arrested for trashing a koarn (oh wait, that is a hate crime in NYC).
But mostly I think the comic is funny.

good point Caul.
I believe it was Carlos Mencia who said, "America is one big game of tag where theres a group always getting fucked at the bottom. On September 11th Jamal and Miguel stepped aside, tapped Akhmed and said "fuck you puta, you're it!". "
Or something to that effect.
--------------------------------
Before 9/11 this would have been printed, no problem.

I'm with Christopher Hitchens (and you, apparently) on this... if Muslims don't want to be seen as fanatical nutjobs, perhaps they should stop taking to the streets and burning shit when they perceive a slight against their no-more-or-less-important-than-anyone-else's-god. Especially when the "slight" comes in the form of a fucking cartoon. And maybe the more liberal of the Allah-chasers could be a bit more vocal in their denouncement of their fanatical brethren.

But you have a point. I want to go back to pre-9/11 because they made great bad guys, now every bad guy is euro trash.
I like a little variety in my stereotype bad guys.

And what is this? I haven't paid too much attention to the Opus-canon since 'Bloom County.' I thought there was some storyline in which Steve Dallas was gay(?), and is Lola Granola showing up out of the blue, or has she made other cameo appearances since the 80s?

haha, I must have missed that one. I love B.B.
Any attack on fundamentalism is appropriate in my opinion. Treading on eggshells around "those people" only serve to heighten a culture of fear. In any case, as Caulaincourt said:
------------
Chances that you will drink my blood:
0.000000000001%
Chances that you will spend your life marginalized, jobless, under the constant scrutiny of authorities, with a itchy beard, married to a smelly woman, hearing news of your relatives getting blown up, etc:
100%
Chances that you will fuck 72 virgins in Heaven:
0%*
*Statistic provided by the fact there are no heaven. And if there were, your dick is scattered around the market in which you blew yourself up.
