Craig held his papers in his hands nervously waiting for the queue to give even a hint of movement, shuffling his feet almost rhythmically. He glanced at his watch for no reason other than it told him he was still waiting. His dirty brown trousers had been the best that he could find, and the shirt was a little too big on the collar, the tie was good though. He'd always been taught that a tie held a suit together.
The queue moved.
He straightened his tie in an imaginary mirror, and pulled his shirt cuffs taunt through the jacket sleeve. He smiled, a practice run, and started his spiel off in his head.
The queue moved.
Grace came running over. Her face red from the manic sprint back to their house.
"I got your forms!" She out stretched her hand "God knows what you've got, but you left them at home. I had to get my good shoes after work, and thought I'd make sure we had everything, and you'd left your bloody forms on the table."
Craig felt his knuckles tighten around the now totally crumpled paper. Relaxing his white knuckles the paper he had in his hand revealed itself to be his Parent Score. Not his ACTUAL papers, just the informative ones they'd received all those months ago.
The queue moved.
"Thanks Grace" He smiled "I think I'm going insane lately." He almost laughed.
"Don't say that!" She hit him on his chest with the back of her hand "Sanity is one of the KPIs"
"KPIs... fuck the KPIs is what I say..." He ran a hand threw his long hair, settling on the back of his neck, feeling the small indents of the black inky lines, eyes raised to the empty heavens.
"Craig!" Grace scathed through clenched teeth, "No one likes the KPIs, but if it is necessary..." Five heavily armed men walked up to the pair, Craig realised how many eyes were actually looking at them. The queue had moved and they had not, it had raised suspicion almost instantly. The sudden outburst of his profanity had almost raised the dead.
"Come with us"
Craig hesitated for a second, almost looking at a herd of sheep for some defence against these wolves. The magnitude of different languages in New London 3 meant communication was sometimes hard, but a rifle butt to the forehead translates well in most languages.
Graces eyes widened as her husband hit the floor, a small trickle of blood leaving his body, she screamed as another rifle butt enforced some civility upon her. The men picked the two bodies off the floor and walked through the door at the front.
The queue moved.
Craig woke to find himself sitting in a room on his own strapped to a chair with a large white screen in front of him.
Craig tried to move, but it was impossible.
The screen clicked into life.

Craig struggled to escape "What? I came here to offer my hand in helping create life! I came here to be a part of Project Parent! I came here so that I could birth life! Not have mine taken away!"
- - YOU HAVE INDEED BEEN ACCEPTED AS PART OF PROJECT PARENT. YOU SHALL STILL BIRTH LIFE. IN YOUR DEATH, ANOTHER MAY LIVE, PROJECT PARENT. WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME - -

Dan pulled open the chilled cabinet, taking out another 5000 specimens. He flicked the TV channel over to Sky News. The news casters face was grim and stern;
"Despite sanctions from the UN, Human Life Society, Federation of Life and the EU, Britain continues to be held in a state of Tyranny. Hundreds are dying on a daily basis, as they are called upon to enter Project Parent. Many believe that had Britain retained the right to vote in 2007, when future dictator Gordon Brown took control of the country and wiping out the monarchy at a memorial service for a Dianna Patron Queen of the People, most of this would not have happened. As the media noose tightens around this once proud country it's leaders control arms and weapons that threaten us all, and with fear of retaliation the rest of the world looks on in horror and helplessness.
In other news Japan has received word from Mars that the second city of Tokyo 1.2 is now suitable for habitation..." His voice trailed off as Dan focused back on his work, backing the frozen DNA into a chilled unit and shipping it off to the UK for Project Parent. It was sad what was happening in Britain, but if he didn't supply the DNA for the new birth... someone else would.
The utter helplessness of a conquered people is perhaps the most tragic feature of a civil war or any other sort of war - Rebecca Latimer Felton

Interesting take on overpopulation.
Personally I would put a universal birth control as an additive into the food and water supply and only those who qualified would be permitted to take an anti-contraceptive.
But that is another story unto itself.
