The scorching figure of flame burst from beneath the Earth's crust, and soared into the air, burning the atmosphere as it ripped the fabric of space and time to reach his destination.
Another glowing figure, clothed in ethereal white robes waited for the fiery one to reach him. He looked troubled, yet serene, and emanated a soft golden aura around his body.
The figure of fire hovered in front of him, pulling black clouds of matter around him to cover the blinding light that poured from his skin.
'I cannot do it without you,' the fire spoke.
The white lord answered, 'I know; that's why I still must refuse.'
'You can't do that - I need, we need this.'
'I am also aware of that.'
'Then why will you not agree? Cannot you see what will happen if we don't do anything?'
'Yes. I can see quite clearly the myriad of future possibilities.'
'Then release the lock - I'm fading.'
'You're not fading, and I'm not without the faculty of reason. Do not try to trick me.'
'I am sorry, but you must consent. I cannot continue, and without me, you will become less than you are.'
'I have warned you - do not try and trick me. Your words were once sweet to my ears, but the eons have taught me to discount whatever you say.'
'Listen to me then. The old one is wasted, he is dead. I know these things - I have servants in your realm, just as you do in mine.'
'I'm aware of the sacrifices mine have made to keep you under observation. Do not sully them with the label of spy. They are true believers who will be rewarded when the time comes.'
'That time has come, though I care not at all for them. The time is now. You have seen how it has degenerated, I know you have. It sickens you just as it excites me.'
'I have my instructions from the old one. I am to hold until there is no hope. Even if one still believes, can still believe regardless of what happens to them, I am to hold on.'
'Why do you care Gabriel? You saw what they did, even after you appeared to them yourself. Now is the time. It is my right, my covenant with the old one. Leave me to it - release the lock!'
'There is still hope. I have my own covenant with the old one, which is my concern. Whatever you say will not break my vow.'
'Only you remain Gabriel, don't you see? The others vote with me - Enoch, Peter, Abraham and Paul have agreed on the course. Do not stand in our way!'
'You may have subverted the others of the council, but I was entrusted to hold, and hold I will. You also forget - there is one other, who has said nothing.'
'And what of him?! Has he spoken since the old one withered and left us? No he has not! He had his chance, and they believed. But two millenniums as they measure it have passed, and now he is a fable, a relic of forgotten years, espousing a naïve doctrine. You've seen the how I've corrupted his message. My followers control his now.'
'That may be largely true, yet his consent is still needed.'
'Rubbish! He gave up that right long ago and you know it! Don't try to deceive the deceiver Gabriel!'
'I hear you, he of the light. What a paradox of a name you bear! But my orders remain - only once all hope is lost, will the lock be opened.'
'Damn you then - I'll see you burn if you delay me.'
'There will be no delay once the time has arrived - you know this. Do not threaten. We both know you hold nothing over me.'
The fire cursed him and writhed in his own impotence.
Gabriel spoke again, 'Bring me proof Lucifer. You know more of what happens in the reality than I. But I warn you, deception will bring retaliation.'
'Agreed,' Lucifer responded. 'Proof you shall have, as hope's grip has never been more tenuous. It is my time now Gabriel, and I will show you.'

The world churned under the misery of its inhabitants. The world economy had failed to deliver the promised equality and satisfaction to all. A by-product of its failure was the pitiful state of the natural world - oil covered the oceans, sandy beaches and idyllic sunsets were a long forgotten memory.
The skies punished more than they revived - the acidic rain poisoned the earth, whilst the pollution clouds blocked out the healing rays of the sun. Lightening ravaged across the horizons, whipping the mega-cities that housed all the remaining human life.
Food and sustenance were in short supply - the natives of the African and South American continents had long since passed, the first, yet by no means the last, to succumb to the ravaging hopelessness that ruled all.
In a tiny village, on the outskirts of the Marseille-Lyon-Geneva ultra-polis, a young girl cringed under yet another blow from her attacker. He forced his filthy body onto her, taking her for the first time, ruining her for a lifetime. Her happiness and dreams began to fade, beckoning the darkness forward.
If the enormity of the consequences of her suffering had been known, maybe something would have been done. But it would, as always, have been far too little, and much too late.
As her spirit broke, her hope vanished; the hope of the world vanished with her.

'Are you in agreement Gabriel?'
'I have long dreaded and foreseen this day, this moment, always believing that it would never come. Yet, as it was written, so it must be done.'
Gabriel drew out a black key from his robes. It dripped malice and keened a despairing wail out into the cosmos.
He placed it into Lucifer's waiting, quivering open hands.
The Gates of Hell were soon to be opened.

Enjoyable. You tend to have a lot more dialogue in your stories than me. Perhaps that's because you're probably a better writer. Still, I couldn't help but feel a little left out. They say that the devil's in the details and I wish there was a little more of that in here.
Still, a worthy effort.
