Not to stir the pot, but I'd like to offer an opportunity for Father O'Mealy to display his vast knowledge. I've never been too very impressed with people who shout the benefit of *some aspect of their being or persona* but offer no concrete proof of that benefit. I mean, I know Philosophy is a very competitive field - that's why so few people with Philosophy degrees actually become Philosophers. But if a Philosophy degree enables one to think far and beyaond the rest of us, I'd like to see an example of it. I'm an engineer and a hypothesis has been placed before me. I'd like to test it.
Jamoathwilly, will you do up a treatise, in your best Philosophy voice, on any subject you decide to be worth expounding upon (the subject of this post excites you, apparently, perhaps it will do), that I might understand how advanced your thinking really is? Won't you make a new post, using all your skills, and enlighten me? You have here the chance to make your professors Majikthise and Vroomfondel very proud.
Thanks in advance, Skrapmetal
================================================================================================
================================================================================================
Firstly, thank you Skrap for presenting this challenge.
Secondly, what follows is nothing short of me attempting to appear smart for my acclaimed professors Majikthise and Vroomfondel.
IDDQD seems convinced that his education in English and 'the arts' somehow trumps my education in Philosophy. After having corrected him by stating that Philosophy is in fact a liberal art, he went on to suggest that he is somehow intellectually elevated in comparison to me based on the fact that he has written over 25000 words in one go.
"i mean if you want to have a pissing contest, i jsut finished a presentation for work (see, i get to make use of my useless degree, unlike you) that was around 70 pages, about 25000 words."
There are a few things that jump out at me about this position of his and I'd like to take the opportunity (per Skrapmetal's suggestion) to analyze this conundrum. Mind you, I find this a conundrum because, after a look through a of IDDQD's posts, I couldn't find one that would, to me at least, pass as even partially intelligent or otherwise worth reading past the first paragraph.
So, how is it then that IDDQD, father of posts like http://www.ubersite.com/m/109747 , http://www.ubersite.com/m/96114 and http://www.ubersite.com/m/70994 (an 'ubermadness' entry riddled with awful grammar and misspellings) can claim superiority over me in ANY vein, because he has typed up the script to some role playing game?
This is...as I understand it of course. See, IDDQD is writing for a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game).
While it IS quite admirable, IDDQD, that you are writing something that will entertain the minds of potentially millions of basement-dwelling losers, I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that it wouldn't matter if you wrote a billion fucking words, in CANTONESE, with your left FOOT, if the end result is some worthless piece of shit like that.
So, I have devised a logically sound argument that I am publishing here on Ubersite for the purposes of you all to evaluate and dissect.
My first premise is - "Creating MMORPG storylines is uninteresting, trite and inconsequential."
My second premise is - "IDDQD created a 25000 word-long MMORPG storyline."
My third premise is - "Those who spend the bulk of their time being complete uninteresting, trite and inconsequential are intellectually inferior to me."
Therefor, my conclusion is - "IDDQD is intellectually inferior to me."
Now, those of us schooled in logic or Elements of Argument understand that the only way to disprove an argument like the one I have presented above is to do either of two things:
A. Logically deny any one or more premises
B. Prove that the conclusion does not actually follow from the stated premises
I guess anyone can try this! Why, it's fun for the whole family!
Until someone can show me where the error in my reasoning lies, the fact remains:
As hated and bashed as he is, OathMeal can kick IDDQD's faggot ass in every way, shape and form.

Me amo ratbikes tambien. I just got MLW's bike running well yesterday. It had a bit of rust in the tanks and the oh-so-evil Inermittent Electrical Problem. Now it'll blast up the road at 80+ with me on it - not bad for a 14-year-old 535cc rice-powered HD-wannabe. She won't let me rat it out, though. She's a chromo like that. I may hit Forks by Frank up for a set of 4"-over forks for it though.

Mind you, I'm only commenting on the necessity of both art and science in an intellectual way. In the real world, if you want to support your family and hobbies and such on the job you get with a four-year degree and no relevant experience beyond a possible internship, a BS sheepskin trumps a BA sheepskin every time. I'm not making a judgement of relative worth, just tossing out a fact. Money is not why I became an engineer, but it isn't a drawback.

Okay... I think I'm starting to get this now. I think you and I have a different outlook, if not even a very different DEFINITION of the word "Writer." I think I can explain this, too. From what I've gathered, you come to the table with an actual background with a degree in English. I went to school for Fine Arts. While English Major are in school, they ASPIRE to one day become Writers. I believe this is how most of you are actually taught to even think. (A disservice, in my opinion.) However, across campus, Fine Arts Majors already consider themselves Artists, they who are going to school merely to perfect their craft.
---
i would agree with your assumption that this is how many are taught to think. i took many writing units, and found them all to be not much more than useless beyond informing me that i was on the right path anyway (my marks were wildly spaced between 55-60s up to 90s). despite that i am glad i took the units, to clarify my perspective.
i also agree that it is a disservice.
it is in my opinion one should not really aspire to be a writer. just write. its as simple as that. if you really really want to, write a lot and maybe some day youll get published. getting published (or getting paid) does not make one a good writer, its just means they get to call themselves a 'writer'. until this happens and you are recognised by society as professing to do it, then youre just another hack - one of millions who think that jotting down some words on a page qualifies. it doesnt.
creating 'art' however, is an entirely different situation. ideally, art should have no other motivation and no other gratification than itself. art for art's sake. most people who call themselves 'artists' or 'writers' are doing so because it sounds good and it might get them laid. which is fair enough, just dont expect me to respect it. i in fact physically cringe when most people i speak to call themselves writers.

1st Premise - IDDQD has claimed that no one is a "true" author unless they have received payment from a legitimate publishing company.
2nd Premise - Various known authors today did not receive their fame until after their deaths.
3rd Premise - While an author may sell a manuscript during their lifetime, that does not nessesitate the fact they will become famous.
CONCLUSION - Ultimate validation in one's work is not contingent on a paycheck.
---
i wasnt talking about fame, kaos. i was talking about the grandiose title of 'writer'
those people did not become 'writers' until after their deaths, when they were published and lauded - bitterly unfairly - as geniuses after their deaths. during their lives they are almost uniformly sad, lonely social outcasts who often also have deep-seated emotional and psychological problems. they were not 'writers' while they were alive because society did not recognise them as such. its as simple as that.
the most regular (and arguably the ONLY) manner in which writers are recognised as being writers is through the validation that is provided by commercial success through being published and sold to the general public. the most regular manner in which this happens is through publishing houses who have the money to not only print the books, but also market them so that they become known and desired by the public; through not only marketing, but also with by the mutual support of critics and journalists - publishers give credence to and place importance upon the opinion of critics, who in turn further validate the works of the writers being published and so continue the circle.
so, i would argue that yes, in fact Ultimate validation in one's work *is* contingent on a paycheck, but further that this condition is contingent upon a couple of other related factors.

Not at all.
I can design and build a very functional paint brush that fits the hand well, that holds a good amount of paint, and the releases the paint smoothly and in proportion to the contact area and pressure. Doesn't mean I can use it to make art, and without art there would be no reason to make the brush. While a painting or abstract thought may have no immediate physical purpose, such are the impetus for the expansion of our knowledge. Once we looked at the skies and called the lights gods. Now we know better, but only becaue we sought to learn the truth. A fair bit of what was metaphysics (meaning "beyond physics" because it was abstract) when Plato and Aristotle were thinking about it is now just physics.
If you ever have the chance, visit the Vatican. The combination of engineering excellence and artistic excellence there is unmatched. D'ja know the St. Peter's Basilica dome (as with all domes built like it) was designed to crack? Truth. The designers and builders even knew how long it would take before the cracks occurred, and planned the completion of the paintings and sculptures of the interiors accordingly. St. Peter's Basilica is nigh 1600 years old. Engineering excellence right there. It is the combination of the abstract and the concrete that makes places like St. Peter's the testimonies to human achievement that they are.

oh and this is his 'source' for most of those quotes. you might notice a few differences. i mean for fuck sake, youre even making rob look good. real good. how can you write a 30 page term paper if you cant even quote accurately without it ruining your argument?
---
wow. 30 whole pages. congrats, big man. no - seriously thats almost 10000 words. which i assume youve done once, so now youll make out like its standard. i mean if you want to have a pissing contest, i jsut finished a presentation for work (see, i get to make use of my useless degree, unlike you) that was around 70 pages, about 25000 words. it took me about a month to write. did i piss further than you?
now, as far as your 'intellect'. with my experience of philosophy (which was only a couple units) your term paper on whatever it was (big words are so impressive, i know they get me laid all the damn time), essentially had you reading the opinions of others and deciding which was best - which is basically what 'evaluating' means. which is fine, jsut dont go thinking that it qualifies you for mensa.
i would suggest that english is a more challenging path than you seem to understand, as i dont jsut sit around reading keats, i have to try and come to grips with whats being said by the man, how hes saying it and explain why he is saying one thing and not something else. now, i could go further in depth with waffling on about russian formalism and prague school criticsm and a whole bunch of other things that sound every bit as impressive as whatever jargon you thought made you sound all book-learned, but instead ill jsut say that youre a moron who posts pictures of himself with a sock on his diminutive genitals on the internet, and obsesses enough over a website to create alter after alter after alter, because it appears you have so little social life and such an inability to form real-world social bonds that you have to come and pester people on the internet all day long.
not only that you have to try and tell people youre smarter than them because youre obviously so insecure about your wit or lack thereof that you actually stooped that saying you 'could bash (me) in absolutely any competition of wits'.
i bet your dads way better than mine too.
now, do i have to smoke you any further down, or would you like me to trash you a little more?

well, youre 'treatise' starts out poorly:
IDDQD seems convinced that his education in English and 'the arts' somehow trumps my education in Philosophy. After having corrected him by stating that Philosophy is in fact a liberal art, he went on to suggest that he is somehow intellectually elevated in comparison to me based on the fact that he has written over 25000 words in one go.
ill break it down:
1: IDDQD seems convinced that his education in English and 'the arts' somehow trumps my education in Philosophy. - i was putting you in your place after YOU stated that your philosophy degree made exactly "203% smarter" than some other person with an actually useful piece of paper coming their way.
2: After having corrected him by stating that Philosophy is in fact a liberal art - ahhh, sorry douchebag, i KNOW its a 'liberal art' - you corrected someone else.
3: he went on to suggest that he is somehow intellectually elevated in comparison to me based on the fact that he has written over 25000 words in one go. - i wrote that in response to YOUR grandiose claim of having written 10000 word term paper(s). you want to have a pissing contest, i played. and won.
as for your logic - it is illogical for you to assume your first premise is correct, because, like all 'art' it is a matter of taste. 'triteness' is a matter of perspective. what actually matters is that i am in a role where i get to utilise my creative abilities and against all odds make use of the things i learned at university. i think you will find it tough to excercise your VAST philosophical knowledge talking to people with more money than you on the floor of whatever retail rut you end up in.
i have some logic of my own:
1: wearing a sock on ones genitals means one is a douchebag
2: you wore a sock on your genitals
3: you are a douchebag.
oh, and by the way, youre just another loser who has written a post obsessing about me. im glad you went and researched, thats at least another 100-150 hits for me. thanks.

Say you're estranged from your Father and you haven't spoken in 12 years. The day after you die, he cries and decides he was wrong all those years and DOES love you. Does this really benefit you? No, because you are dead and cannot appreciate it.
After I am dead, I cease having the capacity to appreciate or enjoy things. So anything that might cause me joy is of little consequence. I'm more concerned with things that happen within the breadth of my life.
I don't care if kids read something I've written in class and have to write a 725 word essay on it. All those dead people--- they don't care that we're reading their work. Because they're dead.
My dead father doesn't care what I'm majoring in.
My dead grandfather doesn't care I didn't go to his funeral. (The relatives still living DID care, but they can fuck off).
My dead grandmother doesn't care that I'm writing an essay about how disgusting her house was.
My dead cat doesn't care that I have new cats.
If they do, they should say so.

_____________________
Eh, no???
Unless you're one of those individuals who has convinced themselves that reality will cease the moment YOU die, I'm pretty sure you accept the fact that this world will continue on after your death. The so-called "Afterlife" does not play any factor in this.
Can you honestly tell me you've never been in class, studying about some of the great authors of humanity, and simply fantasized about what it would be like to have scholars argue about your work someday? Have you never thought about the idea of school children being assigned to read one of your short stories for class? Have you never thought about what future biographers would say about you and your work?
What I'm saying is this - REGARDLESS of what happens after death, what we do in life should leave SOME type of impression upon those who survive us. Is it not a greater thing to be remembered for that which you have contributed? Your previous statements make it seem like all that matters is the gratification one can gather while alive... THIS is why I called you a hedonist.

Because I believe life never ends but merely transforms, I don't care what happens to my body or with any 'legacy' I leave behind.
My soul and energies will only shift into something else anyway.

Id like for my corpse to be sat on a throne that was filled with fireworks. My friends and family would have a massive party which my corpse would preside over then, at the end of the party, a massive bonfire would be built and my corpse flung onto it using a trebuchet.

Oh, don't get me wrong... I would like it as well.

Folks, the nature of all of this is subjective.
Who's smarter? Gee...if you place intellectual value on creating MMORPG storylines, then Mr. Doom God Code wins out hands down.
If, however, you feel that a treatise on the pros/cons of Teleological Governance would make for more of a contribution to the world, I would have steamrolled this cunt.
Sure it's all subjective. But that's why your individual opinions mean so much here.
After all, this is LIFE AND DEATH. UBER CRED IS SOMETHING TO LIVE AND DIE BY.

"uninteresting, trite and inconsequential" are immeasurable quantities.
For instance, he has said all of my work is such because it has appeared on Uber and through Self-Publishing.
I disagree. However, I ALSO do not believe anyone can correctly estimate the sum 'worth' of art.
While I find this arguement SOUND, I do not find it ultimately VALID.

Well two of your "premises" are based purely on opinion. Therefore it wouldn't be hard for anyone to disagree with your opinion and your whole arguement is trashed. That's like saying "My car is better than yours cause I like Cadillacs better so I am better." Doesn't work like that.

The flaw:
People who write MMORPGs get paid a shit load as they are the most popular form of gaming today.
Doing so, he will get paid more than you.
By getting paid more then you, he is smarter for not taking "philosophy" as his major.
Therefore, you are his mental bitch.
