it don't take much no more to be all you think you can be
just sign your life away right here and baby be with me
now we don't need nothing now unless we lose ourselves
and put our bodies up to dust like books up on a shelf
there ain't no maid in heaven 'cause we sold her on the street
she fetched a pretty penny and some food for us to eat
it ain't like i feel sorry now 'cept for everything i've done
to hurt you like you'd hurt yourself in all those years to come
and you gotta have that faith in me that i've always been tryin'
down weary roads of hobo shoes layin' before me as i'm dyin'
the Lord has promised me my wings but be they angel or bat
is something He'll decide when he weighs my sins 'gainst fat.
i shoulda been a laugher more but them tears they love my eyes
and this cloudy vision from vexation helps to cover up your lies
i can't tell what is happening when all i see is in my head
and maybe baby we just need some time to think instead
so run with me down to the bed where the river still can talk
and let the sky fall into you like all them sunflower stalks
the gods we made for us to play with when we both were young
have fallen from the altars and have now become undone
like the sweater that i got for you to try an' keep you warm
while we are not together and the snow begins to storm
and at last i'll have to go away when the moon is all to see
knowin' that at last i'd say i could be all that i could be.
