I am sure some of you have heard of the Jena 6 and Rev. Al Sharpton's current excuse to bring forth a "civil rights movement". The story can be found here:

I just want to hear some opinions on this. Do you believe Al Sharpton and his followers have reason to protest? I believe the 6 should go to jail. They committed a crime. I was lead to believe that's what happens when you break the law.

Educate yourself. It isn't a matter of race, it's a matter of the judicial system, believe it or not, it is illegal to beat the shit out of somebody. eh, this sounded hella complicated to begin with but turns out to be very simple and just have been made complicated.
1.
6 people attack and hospitalise one person, 1 of the 6 was technically a juvenile, but also had previous violent crimes on his record, so it probably evens out at the same level.
so, punish them.....charge them with whatever the american equivalent of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm is, a few months in jail...varying depending which of them did how much kicking.
2. an investigation into why they were originally charged with attempted murder....sounds a bit extreme to me.
3. the protesters shut the fuck up and go home.

my thoughts is no one is in the right on this. plus if one of the white guys in the original fight just got probation that should be all anyone recieves. yeah the kid was in the hospital for a couple of hours but was still ok enough to go to a party later that night,so who cares. it was an ass whopping. my opinion, if we are going to start trying people for fights we need to start doing it for every highschool fight or any fight for that matter. doesn't matter if its white against black, black against white, black on black, white on white. and no matter the injuries.

It is pretty common for lawyers to go into trial with bigger charges to try and get a plea, however six people beating one person to the ground and to continue beating them while they are unconscious is not out of the ballpark for attempted murder.
Bell, the kid who could have gotten 30 odd years and had his trial overturned to be tried as a juvenile already has 4 violent criminal convictions on his records. I can't think of many better examples of when to try a minor as an adult.

A more fitting punishment might have been to exclude the kids who beat him up from school, not to put another load of black kids in jail.

What's the white equivalent? I hear "what if it were 6 black guys and one white guy" but that's too simple. There's no racial threat that is really equal to what the white's did.

All crimes are hate crimes. Race shouldn't be a factor in determining how bad a crime is. A crime is a crime no matter what. All violent crimes are born from hate. Bringing in the race factor only furthers the idea that blacks and whites are different. Black guy fights a black guy, its somehow less of a crime if a white guy fights a black guy? Gimme a break. All crimes are hate crimes.
The white kids should be sentenced for harassment and for making death threats. The 6 black kids who attacked an unconscious white kid should be sentenced accordingly. Trying to protect them because they are black is unfair. The law wasn't made for black people and white people separately. The law is the law, no matter race or creed or gender.
They broke the law, they should be punished. They shouldn't get any special treatment because they were victims of racial harassment. They should be treated like 6 human beings who attacked one unconscious human being after said unconscious human being was knocked out during a fight.
It would be nice to live in a society where no one cares about race and the phrase "Hate Crime" doesn't exist. What's next? "Emo Crime?" Where one kid commits an act of hate towards an emo kid? Where is the line drawn? ALL CRIMES ARE HATE CRIMES. These kids should get no special treatment. If they do, it further presses on the belief that blacks are different from whites and slows the progression mankind.

It doesnt matter that they were provoked. If I provoked you and pissed you off bad enough to shoot me, its still illegal. There isnt a law anywhere stating that what the white kids did was illegal. It was a distasteful and ignorent thing to do but it wasnt against the law. Maybe the school should punish them in someway since they did it on school grounds. If the white kids hung nooses and slung racial slurs, then they need to be prosecuted for hate crimes.
If some black kids beat a white kid up, then they need to be prosecuted for assualt.

I can see this now. White dude is sitting on a bench eating his lunch and talking on the phone. Black dude walks by. White dude looks up but doesn't stare or give a "look" to the black dude and then goes back to his conversation and lunch. Black dude badly beats the white dude up. Later tells police it was because the white dude looked at him in a "racist way." Fatass Sharpton shows up and rallys support and organizes marches and generally makess a huge pain in the ass out of himself. He makes speeches about the "silent racism" black people have to endure, i.e. racist "looks." He says it wasn't the black dude's fault because he had just had enough of it.
White dude's family is harassed and mocked. White dude is called a skinhead, KKK, and whatever else you can think of. Plus, he's called "cracker" and "honkey." But that's ok, donchaknow!
Finally all charges are dropped against the black dude. Community celebrates. White dude has to have a year of physical therapy.
Tell me that couldn't happen.

as i said to someone else. they're both racial hate crimes or whatever. however, no matter how many things you put in the tree it is not the equivalent of beating the shit out of someone, or even attempting to. unless the tree falls over it will not hurt someone the same way a kick to the face will. the crimes should be treated differently. it's the difference between a threat and an action.
yes the charges were exaggerated against the black students. yes the white students that pulled the noose prank got off too easily. yes the entire back story to the race relations in that town are bullshit and unfair, but 6 white kids beating up one black kid apparently would garner the same response from the revs jesse and al as six black kids beating up one white kid: "it's not their fault, white people are just evil."

But seriously, though. As funny as a picture of empty nooses being hung may be on uber (and there are plenty here that would indeed find it funny), in reality it becomes a serious issue. The problem here is, while the 6 black kids committed an actual crime (assaulting the white kids), I'm not sure if what the white kids did is an actual crime, even if they're cocks for doing so. When I say I don't know if it was a crime, I mean legally I don't know what the laws are for symbolizing lynching. So therein lies the difference in what they were charged with. I think.
Or the prosecutors are just being racist.

They've been following this pretty closely on the nightly news... what I gather from it is this: Racial tension is prevalent in the highschool. Black kid goes to hang out in a "white" spot just to prove that he can. More than likely, he called someone a honky or a cracker. The white kids may or may not have called him a nigger first. The next day, he walks up to one of the white kids and he and 5 of his friends proceed to kick the shit out of them.
Somehow, the black community has decided that the kids are in jail because they're black. Seems to me they're in jail because 6 of them beat the ever-loving shit out of another kid. One kid. Not a kid and 5 of his friends, but one, single kid. I don't care if he called you a nigger, son, You and your friends don't get to beat him up for it. Because guess what? If the tables were turned and 6 white guys beat the shit out of a black kid, it would be considered a hate crime, and they'd go to jail too.
