I don't usually listen to pop music. It has no foot-hold in my C.D. collection. Pop music is not played on the radio station I listen to. Probably the closest thing to Pop music on my station of choice is Soko's "I'll kill her"*. Having said this, I must inform you (the reader) that the reason why Rihanna's songs have filtered into my world is because the "music" channels on my television constantly blare out the same crap, day in, day out. Also ALL of the clubs in this city, except one, play this brand of hip-hopish popish vomit.
So, what's the problem then?
Well, I am (self-proclaimingly) a muscian. And as such I invest a large amount of my time listening to music. I listen to the note structure. The timing changes (if any, but I have Metal for that, THANK YOU MASTODON!). The sometimes bloody awful lyrics that everybody thinks are awe-inspiring. I walk to the time signature of the song (things get interesting in 9/8 time). In short, I notice similarities.
I was walking past one of the various media selling chains last week and I heard a song being blared out over the PA that these shops use to confuse buyers into thinking that it was the hottest track right now and they must purchase it or they will never be cool enough to have friends because they will be labeled an outcast purely based on their choice of music and I thought I recognised it. Although it was a little too modern, so I stopped.
Now I don't have a problem with people doing a cover-version or two. I do have a problem with people blatantley using other people's songs and scrawling filth all over it.
I turned to a random in the store, who from the looks couldn't have been much younger, and said, "Blue Monday by New Order, hey?"
To which he replied, "Who?"
I was shocked. So I walked away and asked another random the same thing. Their reply was along the same lines. I then phoned my lady, Anne, and she listened to it and after some coaxing she stated that yes, she could hear the similarities between this song and another. In this obvious display of melody copying, I walked out of the store and started researching this, "Rihanna" character. What I found disturbed me.
Here I present to you the proof, that this "artist" is a blatant plagarist, and should be stopped.
Rihanna's Shut Up and Drive - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WAapKx2TvM
VS.
New Order's Blue Monday - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts9r0QHuFHw
It may be a little hard to hear the similarities within New Order's classic so I've also referenced a cover of the song, that will make it easier.
Orgy's Blue Monday - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phnld-XX0tM
After this, I found another.
Rihanna's SOS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vblrg4LSShM
VS.
Soft Cell's Tainted Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEh5pWjcWCg
Again here is a cover of the song, to make it slightly harder, if you like to play that way.
Marilyn Manson's Tainted Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExWm16kKH4U
But wait, there's more.
Rihanna's Pon De Replay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyToptnynBY
VS.
Lou Bega's Mambo #5 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsjevQ7ZtCc
What the fruit is going on here?
But that's not all she doing, she's also stealing the names of songs to make her's more appealing to the clue-less Mum's and Dad's who buy C.D.'s as gifts for their impressionable children. From her Music Of The Sun album there is a song called Here I Go Again. Does she think we're stupid? (reference for our less informed readers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKTiwCez6Zs&mode=related&search=) But then, she pulls out this little baby on her next album A Girl Like Me, the song titled Crazy Little Thing Called Love. COME ON! SERIOUSLY? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrelPOP518g&mode=related&search=.
Does nobody else see this?
The final one is not so much a direct rip-off but it's close. On the same album as Crazy Little Thing... she has a song titled A Million Miles Away. All I can do is point you to this little gem and be done with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NngZZmqD4MY
She must be stopped now, before it's too late. Who knows what she is capable of doing now that she know's she can, firstly use other band's song names to ride to success, and then use their melodies. I mean what's next? A film clip of her in cell-shading animation ala A-ha's Take on Me?
I hope not.
P.

What do you play?
---
In no particular order; piano, violin, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and a bit of flute.
Tried the bagpipes once , and nearly died. But I am thinking of learning another wind instrument.

I've always been a big admirer of Dick Dale's Miserlou, until I heard it being fucked to pieces by the Black Eyed Peas.
Oh, wait, I don't care... Damn...

It's not just that gems are being cut-up into cheap bling shit, it often
delivers an even better song. (thinking of example)
Here's something i came across lately : http://rockruse.ytmnd.com/
Everything's stolen, resampled, and it's a genuine mess. My next experiment will sound different because i've heard that. Nice post, btw.

Heh. Yeah, taking a leisurely stroll to Rush, Dream Theater, and the likes just doesn't work too well, does it?
Interesting read.

You know, technically, changing the lyrics and using the same music is more "creative" than doing a straight cover.
