So I'm trying to buy a car-my first car-how exciting!
but there's a couple problems
a) I don't know anything about cars
b) I've never tried to buy anything this expenisve before, I don't think I even understand the numbers
c)I'm a girl and I can tell they're treating me differently
d) They're used car sales people, you've got to be shifty to have a job like that, right?

So this morning I get up and I have a message from Toyota of Westport on my cell phone
"Carmex9 this is Rich from Toyota, I just wanted you to know that tomorow we're having a great sale on some new Camry's"
and so on.
Well the whole thing just reeks of desperation and money. Apparently I do not like having to buy a car and find it to be a collosal pain in the ass.
So tomorow I'm going to go to the dealership to look at the Camry's, it makes me just want to buy a vespa.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone else had car stories, helpful hints etc.

cheeseygoddess-my price range is between 12k and 16k
so i should be able to find something relatively hooked up.

Maybe I am being a little nervous about this but its a lot of money and I've never had my own car before, I'm 21 and this is a big deal to me.
so sorry Noonan, I'll try to act like a big mature grown up like you ok? just tell me how you got you got your head stuck so far up your ass

anyway I'm going to a honda dealer now so wish me luck, maybe I'll find the car of my dreams

Are you 16? You sound like you'd stress about buying a new trapper-keeper, jesus.

It all depends on the kind of car you want and the price range. If I were you I wouldn't deal with car dealers. Go to www.autotrader.com and find people around your area selling cars. Usually individuals selling cars are cheaper and can get you better deals. Also, if youre lookign sporty and have less than $10k you cant go wrong with a camaro. 1994 Camaro z28, thats what Im tryin to find.

Don't listen to everything consumer digest says on cars. Like everything else, cars last as long as you take care of them. Someone (forgot who) said that a mitsu started falling apart at 75K. Mine just hit the 100K mark and all it needed was to have the plugs and wires replaced. But if you don't take care of your car very well I'd suggest a Toyota. I had a celica that hit 150,000 and I treated that car like ass.

Here's a pointer I got from my logics profressor from college.

'Always let the dealer know that you DO NOT need this car'
Lie to the dealer, make sure they know you really don't need a car and that you are talking to other dealers who may give you better offers, etc. Elaborate on the subject matter of getting better deals, and that you have friends who know where to get great deals but you wanted to shop around on your own to see if any other dealer (meaning the dealer your at), could give you better offers.

Also check at your bank to see what financing they may have, this will give you better barganing power. From experience dealers usually can never match what my credit union gives me on rates.

Good luck!
cheers,
glasscpp

I don't know speed...I love that car, they are badass. A friend of mine had one and I loved it but that thing started falling apart with less than 75k miles.

Alright, I spent 4 months looking for my car, and its gorgeous. What I consider to be one of the best looking sports cars available. Its a mitsubishi 3000GT. Sister car of the Dodge Stealth. You can get a used 94-96 for 8000-9000 dollars. Its front wheel drive, sporty as all hell, and has 222 horsepower. And mitsus are like the other japanese cars, durable as all shit.

Go to bluebook.com and put in all of the relevant information and it will give you an idea of how much to pay.

BUY A TOYOTA. I HAD ONE AND I PUT 300,000 MILES ON IT AND THEN I PASSED IT DOWN TO MY LITTLE BRO AND IT'S STILL TICKING. HE'S PUTTING EVEN MORE MILES ON IT AND IT RUNS PERFECT STILL.

buy a TOYOTA or a HONDA. You can easily put 200,000 miles on them.

I can only speak from personal experience, but the Toyota Camry is easily one of the best cars on the market--they'll run forever.

If you're buying new and not going for used, I'd try to talk the guy down to at least $2,000 below the factory price, and maybe even go for $4,000. As with most negotiations, start with a ridiculous offer and wear it down slowly.
