From the kitchen, I hear the bed squeak as he lifts himself up. A thrill of excitement rushes through my body. I'm rarely awake in the morning to see him get ready for work and walk out the door. Even the crunching sound of the blender he uses to make his morning smoothies never riles me out of sleep. But today I'm up before him. Technically, I haven't slept yet. This rare morning together is making me giddy. I push the button on the blender, watching the strawberries and raspberries swirl around, red juice oozing out and shards of seeds spinning uncontrollably. With a minimal glance at the directions, I scoop protein powder into the blender, watching the bedroom door intently. It cracks open and I smile as he stumbles out, his dark hair tangled in a toppled mess. He looks at me and glances at the clock with a sudden look of fear. I wave at him, telling him he's fine, he's got plenty of time.
When he asks me what I'm doing up, my eyes sparkle with excitement. I tell him I finally finished my masterpiece: the sculpture that will make me famous. He grabs me suddenly, lifting me in the air, covering my neck and chest with kisses. We laugh. Giggling, I try to reach the stop button on the blender, but he swoops me back and forth, teasing the distance between my fingertip and the counter. Finally, he sets me back to the floor, kissing my neck roughly. I pour the contents of the blender into a glass and hand it to him. He calls me his private Betty Crocker and sips it. His face scrunches up. He coughs. And I watch him, making my eyes large and hopeful. He shakes his head and kisses me, saying it's just a bit too sweet, but he'll drink it anyway.
Anxious, I grab his hand and lead him towards the second bedroom. My locked studio. I pretend to have difficulty opening the door. He stands back, drinking my bitterly sweet fruit smoothie as quickly as he can, waiting for the big reveal. The door swings open and I lift my arms and bow.
The remains of the smoothie drip down his shirt and the glass falls, shattering at his feet. He takes a step forward, horrified, but piece of glass cuts his foot, causing him to stumble back. I glance up and give a cautionary look at my creation.
Her head was the hardest part, I tell him. Our small steak knives kept leaving elongated ridges across her neck. I finger the uneven folds of her skin. Luckily, that staple gun worked wonders, pinning down her ears and the leftover hang of the neck flap. I poured glue over her hair and that seems to hold her in place just fine. I even had enough room to pull her tongue down through the bottom of her severed head, I say as I gingerly touch the flop of tongue meat that has become bluish and bloated. I yank lightly on it, making train whistle sounds and giggle. I've written the words cunt and bitch on the canvas behind her with her blood and the words have dried brown and cracks have begun to appear through the letters.
Honestly, I tell him, I wasn't playing on doing it. When I appeared at her car window, a look of recognition passed across her face. She knew who I was. I had been prepared to inform her he already had a girlfriend, but she knew. I shrugged, showing him my regret. That pretty much sealed her fate. Don't you think, sweetie?
He watches me. His face is pale with shock and grief. He swipes at the leftover smoothie on his face. He's noticing that there isn't much left of her. I can see his thoughts. Surely, there should be more than the single bucket of slashed flesh and blood. Clearing his throat, he asks me what I've called it. I can see his mind racing. Call the police. Get out. Call the police. Get out. Get out!
I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss his cheek tenderly. Protein Shake, I tell him quietly. Her name is Protein Shake. I can feel his stomach lurch through his shirt as he looks down at the red splotches of his bitterly sweet smoothie and the red puddle by the shattered glass.
