There was a short story about a plantation owner in Louisiana who married a light-skinned woman with dark hair. She bore him a black baby. He shunned the woman, thinking her ancestry tainted; and she ended up dying on her own. Years later, he discovered that he was adopted and had in fact been the genetic contributer to his baby's blackness.
