I'm a big fan of movies. Almost any sort of movie, I'll be able to watch from start to finish. But when viewing a movie you must be reminded of two things. One it is only a movie, and within that there will be things you may or may not like depending on the directing, casting, acting, (or lack there-of), and also special effects. Two, because it is only a movie, it is trying to get you to feel something, whether it be any sort of emotion, or inspiration, or whatever.
This movie holds a pretty solid cast, although I cannot say I recognized every main character. I'm not a big fan of comic related movies, and that is because I never got into the huge comic craze. So I can honestly say I've never seen Daredevil, The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, or any of the other relatively recent movies that were only made to get a big pay-off from comic fans.
This is a movie that I enjoyed partially because of books that I had read and the resemblance and incorporation of them into the movie. I will admit that I never pictured Captain Nemo the way he was portrayed, but after thinking back to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" I can see how the description wasn't completely inaccurate. And I'll add Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde looked a lot like what you would imagine. The portrayal of characters was done fantastic and the actor followed up with a "bang-up" job.
Sean Connery was what anyone would imagine him to be and absolutely nothing less. His character while being almost the only average human, he was still one of the most heroic of them all. While his abilities were nothing more than what a man can perfect, he still "wow'ed" the audience. The plot was molded deeper then what I suspected at first, and was followed through with only a minor annoyance here and there, concerning certain tasks that made me wonder about the realism. But I then remembered, this is a movie, and I can't expect perfection in a fictional setting.
To conclude I thought the acting was done magnificently and the special effect were just as enjoyable. The movie as a whole was quite a change I suspect from other comic book related movies. There wasn't much of a sappy romance although there was just enough to carry the storyline along. Which was much needed, and enjoyed, too.
I give this 4.6 out of 5.0
Connery kicks ass, too.

Dude, have you read Jekyll and Hyde? Hyde was an even smaller man than Jekyll. He was also quite young, and none of his features were singularly deformed, he just had an air of evil. And I don't think he had the vast amounts of strength it takes to tear chimneys off roofs and throw them around London.
I didn't like this film. I laughed at it most of the way.

Agreed, I also very much enjoyed this movie. I thought I'd hate it, but it turned out to be rather good.

If it wasn't based on a comic how come it actually mentioned in writing before the movie start it was?
Oh, and I knew Nemo would have a beard, but he looked like a Gypsy. I thought he was providing magic carpet rides at first.
The boat wasn't powered by steam. If you read the book, like mentioned, you'd understand a little better. But in the movie Nemo mentioned something about the solar panels being recharged.
As for the ICBM's, he's Captain fucking Nemo. You should be questioning the boat just as much as the missiles.

Actually I thought Nemo was a decent portrayal. He was the son of a British Raj or something like that so they got that part right.
And Jimmy, as to your query, if you read 20,000 Leagues, you see that Nemo talks about extracting all his electricity from the sea water.

Yeah, but at the end. Leaves room for the sequel. I thought nemo's ship was just a tad bit on the large side. I mean, who the hell wouldn't notice something like that roaming around the ocean? Well, how was it powered? Steam?
