while im here i was just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share some advice on good
-firewalls
-antivirus software
-and encryption software
-just for fun stuff
-while im at it any sites with info that would help my sorry idiot self. (this is where i leave myself open to the worst jokes)
ive been running win98 on my computer just cause im cheap.. but any os software advice is welcome cause im always tinkering with new stuff being the geek i am.. im pretty much a newbie concerning most technical computer stuff.
ide like to thank anyone whos nice enough to post any advice on stuff to get, and stuff really really avoid. i accept the fact you generaly get what you pay for but if you know of something thats freeware and still damn good im all for it.
*kudos to cult of the dead cow for truly making some of the best and coolest freeware programs outthere. http://www.cultdeadcow.com/ , for those of you who live in a country not quite as plesent and forgiving as america or those of you who are concerned about internet cencorship check out http://sourceforge.net/projects/camerashy/ for a wonderful program spawned from the dead cow cult.err this is getting long ... ill shut up now... im leaving myself out for major verbal punishment so please... be gentle. (unless your crashtestandfailed ...you just be quiet..your mean)

if your not bullshitting me about smoothwall thank you EH...kinda... for being the slightly helpful yet disgruntald basted you are....and hidden if someday you stumble back onto this post your answer to why the hell i want good antivirus software is, its always nice to have something to scan stuff if your using winMX or any other peer to peer junk

Eric's right. i'm not going to waste my time. and although i agree with almost anything he would suggest, i'll have to say that anything he does suggest is in vain, seeing as how it's usually something Unix based, and you're a win98 user.
and you don't need anti-virus software if you aren't an idiot. anti-virus software is for people that don't know SHIT about the computer they are using. all it does is take up shitloads of resources on your computer.
dumbass opening some email- "message.zip? i don't know the person that sent this to me, but i wonder what it is. i'm going to open it. WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!?!"
encryption software? and why oh why do you need a firewall? wait, you don't have a firewall AND you're running win98? can i have your IP address? what are you trying to protect?

Smoothwall.org Have fun with that, oh by the way, to run smoothwall you are going to need some knowledge on the linux kernel and basic linux commands, you will also need another computer with 3 network cards. Have fun with that fuck tard!

EH... thank you really for being the disgruntald person you are.. well not really
all im am is eager to learn .... trust me i do alot of research ...addmittingly i dont know crap compared to the average computer savy individual. while i do know alot more then i show in this post i really dont know crap .. thats why im asking for alittle advice from someone more knowledgeable in my field of interest.. while ide love to put my computer back in the box it came in i cant because i peiced the thing togather myself. ide really appreciate any advice or knowledge youd be willing to share....in return i will neaver again apply the term "geek" to anyone who simply uses win98 for politicly correct purposes i will only apply it to people deserving of the name. in conclusion .. just because i sound like a petty minded 11 year old boy with no knowledge of computer applications in my post dosent mean im a fricking idiot... im simply trying to avoid sounding like some hyped up computer cracker pretending to computer hacker who wants to know where to find the newest net devil trogen and DOS attack programs....cause all i am is a 16 year old teenager trying to listen to anyone who has a little USEFUL advice so i can learn the right way, all i asked for was your input on a good firewall....cause searching the internet the world over wont find you the best.. you need human judgement from those who already know what their doing. with that said ...ide appreciate it if youd spair me the soldierX computer hacker mentality and be useful to those who are willing to learn. because so far your the only one whos posted anything on this post that seems to know more then me. although other replies have been alot nicer.. your the only one who can take me further then i already am.

my best advice at this point, would for you to put your computer back in the box and send it back to where ever you got it from. If you are researching this stuff, and asking where to find it on an open forum before googling it, you are one of those types destined to follow in mafia boy's footsteps. Don't learn about any of that shit untill you get the basics down. With you running win98 you arent a geek, you are far from it. Get on irc and start downloading iso's. I am cheap too but I have bran fucking new products from microsoft and redhat, suse, and sun. I didnt pay for shit. You really don't need to get involved with anything. I would give you advice on whats the best firewall stuff, but you wouldnt be able to figure it out. Its far too advanced for you to understand.

Just google any of these since I am too lazy to find their sites.
Best free firewall: Zone Alarm
Antivirus: I am sorry, but go Nortons. Sure it might not detect a few things, but with auto update it is quite powerul.
encryption software/fun stuff: Huh?
Go to www.astalavista.com you will be able to find most underground things I think you are *wink* looking for.
