Sometimes, when you feel bad enough about what's happening in your life, you just need something to change. Pain, anger, and sadness build up so hot and boil over until SOMETHING just HAS to give.
In my younger, crazier days, my legs paid the price for my unhappiness. Too afraid to become a "cutter", I tried to trick the system and use my lighter instead of a blade. When depression suffocates even your tear ducts, it leaves you with few options for catharsis.
I remember begging myself to cry as I held the burning lighter, waiting for the metal to heat up. Sixty seconds or so would usually suffice. Then I'd let the flame go out and press the hot metal to the skin just above the inside of my right ankle. For the first second, there would be no sensation at all, but then slowly and surely the pain would start, dull at first, than sharper and sharper until it took all my concentration to defeat the urge to jerk my hand away. Not yet, not yet, I'd chant silently in my head. I never let go until I felt the prickle of tears in my eyes. Like breaking the seal, those first few tears were all it took to open the floodgates. I'd toss my lighter aside and cry gratefully.
Sometimes I still touch the scars... to remind myself that I COULD go back if I wanted to and to remind myself why I don't want to.
It took a long time to defeat that demon, and part of me knows it hasn't really been defeated- just replaced.
I still give myself battle scars.
For awhile, I tried cutting my hair. The first time, it almost worked better than the burning. I remember sitting on the bathroom floor gripping handfuls of my freshly snipped locks, grieving my femininity, and once again grateful to be crying at last.
When I got used to what I looked like with short hair, and cutting it off would no longer shock me into tears, I tried dying it instead. The effect was never as good, but it was comforting to look at someone I didn't really recognize in the mirror.
Now I try to salve my pain in less drastic means. Baby steps. Little changes. Like make-up. I've found make-up to be a less invasive, but still sufficient way to change that damn reflection. Instead of blood on my leg, I smear fake red goo across my lips. I remember an old make-up ad that said something like "A woman should always paint a smile on her face."
Like it's 1950 all over again, I paint myself up like a pretty lady to hide the fact that I feel like anything but. The worse I feel, the better I look.
I don't think the make-up really works, at least not in the cathartic way that injuring my body or defacing my hair did. But it does make me feel like at least no one can see how shattered I am inside, and that idea of privacy in my pain is comforting. Of course, the fact that I only wear make-up when something is wrong is telling to those who know me best, so even that privacy is as fake as the colour on my face.
But you have to keep breathing. You have to keep living. You have to keep on keeping on. So you do what you can. You change the reflection so you can pretend that the broken girl you feel inside isn't really you.

Hmmm.
The real definition of feminism is the belief that men and women deserve to have equal rights. Wearing makeup has absolutely nothing to do with that, although one could argue that you're being sexist by putting on lipstick, because it's usually women who do that.
Whatever. You have to do what you have to do and if wearing lipstick makes you feel better or different in a good way, then keep doing it. You aren't less of a real woman because you are.

Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet red lips. I saw a woman dead on the post mortem table and clutched in her hand was a piece of lipstick. At last someone had done something to make them individuals again, they were someone, no longer merely the number tatooed on the arm. At last they could take an interest in their appearance. That lipstick started to give them back their humanity.

This is very true, however it is a medical/health issue that needs to be managed, like diabetes or an impacted tooth. You can't wait until you lose half your jaw or your foot and then complain that nobody understands. Psychiatric problems are severely ignored in this country (can't speak for you limeys) and I think that's why this slag is like this. She doesn't realize that if she does have a real problem, she's not unique or special, but ill and in need of help. There's nothing wrong with that. Also, if you're predisposed to some diseases like obesity, depression, or whatever, it doesn't mean that you don't have to take care of yourself. Unfortunately it means that you have to try harder, but everybody can cry that same song. I have obesity, diabetes, alcoholism, paedophilia, dementia, bipolar disorder, breast cancer, and schizophrenia in my family. First, you act like a victim. Women tend to do this in general. Of course we're going to be harrassed and marginalized if we snivel in corners, join feminist discussion boards that promote the idea that men are the enemy, and cry, "Boys are sooo mean! Boo Hoo!"
Women need to stand up, grow a spine, take care of themselves, grow a figurative pair of big hairy ones, and seize our day so to speak.
We can do this while not villifing men.

You need to take control of your life. You have to let things go. No, it's not easy having been a victim, but you have to get over it. You have to stop being a victim. Make the choice to NOT BE A VICTIM. People can hurt you, but you are the only one who can make you a victim.

We have to be stronger than the circumstances that surround us, especially when they are in the past. You can't let someone make you a victim for life, TAKE BACK YOUR LIFE. Own it.
