The shadows cast on the wall by the nightlight are the only thing keeping me company as I lie awake in bed. My wife lay next to me, stroking her fingers through my hair on my head. It helps her fall asleep, she says.
Tonight is the last night she'll do it.
I came home three weeks ago from a war I don't support. Home. Hell, I don't even know the meaning of the word anymore. It's a house I haven't lived in, in a city I'm unfamiliar with.
I have become a statistic.
Name and last four of my social. That's all they ever wanted. I'm a number and a name. I have a date of birth too, but that's about it.
And I'm alone.
Alone in my thoughts, my fears, my memories haunting me. Alone in a living nightmare. I'm told I'm not the only one going through this.
And again, I'm a statistic.
After tomorrow I'll have no home...no house to go back to. This isn't the place I left nine months ago. This is not my bed, and that isn't my wife lying next to me.
Or maybe I'm not me at all.
Tomorrow we're finalizing the divorce. No more good night kisses. No more listening to music in the car and singing along with her. No more smoking cigarettes on the patio at night with her.
No. Just me now. Alone.
I'm a statistic.

My little brother is in the Navy. Also getting divorsed. I'm only hoping he doesn't pick up the drinking like his "buds" have. Maybe too late.
