Over 345,000 people have been evacuated in San Diego so far...I was almost one of them.
The sky is no longer orange, and the constant smell of smoke in the air is no longer omnipresent.
Today, the fire lines have receded, somewhat, and some people are being allowed to return to their homes...some people are being allowed to return to what's left of their homes.
The weird thing is that the fires often jump from house to house - one house will burn down, and then, on the next street over, an ember from that house will touch off another one.
Sometimes they can save it, sometimes they can't.
Every resource we have is dedicated to saving structures, which means a lot of the open spaces and farms are being left to burn. Most of the animals have been rescued, but some have not.
It's not just one fire, there are several, all going in different directions - we're getting gusts of wind up to 50 mph in some places, which makes things...difficult, to say the least.
Schools are closed, businesses are closed...we're all just sitting at home, waiting for the Reverse 911 call telling you to leave, NOW. I know some people who have already got that call, fortunately, they've announced that those areas are now safe, and it's alright to go back in.
But a lot of people haven't got that call, they're still waiting.
The football stadium is holding 9000 people right now - my local school has 1200 refugees. We have a lot of volunteers taking care of them though - there's even a whole area dedicated as a kennel, for all the dogs that folks have.
The TV is full of constant images of raging fields of fire, racing up a ridgeline, entire streets of houses burning to the ground, desperate helicopters and tanker planes dumping water on a seemingly futile quest to stop the relentless advance.
We're surrounded in every direction, except for the Pacific.
Amazingly enough, very few deaths have been reported...but all our efforts are going to triage the veins of flame that are shooting up all around us - they'll be time to count the dead and destroyed later...if there IS a later.
Sleep comes hard, if at all - days of adrenaline put one into a fugue-like state. It's like drinking pot after pot of black coffee - you know it's not good for you, but you daren't stop, lest the embers land on you.
The talking heads continously read off the stream of data on the video screen - do this, don't go there, don't forget that, stay off the cell phone, stay off the roads, be ready, but wait...
Forget FEMA, the only talking head I wanna see now is this guy...

The major TV networks etc provided full coverage of all important matters relating to the San Diego evacuation. I'm sure everyone had feelings of heartfelt sympathy for those most severely affected. However, the short piece you wrote is so dull and uninteresting in the way that it's worded, that I can only give it a -2.

Watch out, you might get what you're after
Cool babies, strange but not a stranger
I'm an or-di-na-ry guy
Burning down the house
Hold tight, wait 'till the party's over
Hold tight, we're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house
Here's your ticket, pack your bag, time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far, maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire
All wet, hey you might need a raincoat
Shakedown, dream walking in broad daylight
Three hun-dred six-ty five de-grees
Burning down the house
It was once upon a place, sometimes I listen to myself
Gonna come in first place
People on their way to work, baby what do expect
Gonna burst into flame
My house, s'out of the ordinary
That's right, don't want to hurt nobody
Some things sure can sweep me off my feet
Burning down the house
No visible means of support, and you have not seen nothin' yet
Everything's stuck together
I don't what you expect, staring into the TV set
Fighting fire with fire
Be well.

I think it's HILARIOUS how they're downplaying it here in MD. 'Oh, they have all the fires contained and everyone's a-okay'. Oh, and evidently, Camp Pendleton is perfectly fine, with only one small fire and no closures or interruptions.
CROCK OF SHIT.

A great way to stop a fire from engulfing your home is a concrete wall.
Then again, when you're GOOD at fire, you can go through concrete. Then again, that isn't a prequisite for being good at fire.

Dealing with the same thing in orange county with the santiago fire - we never got the evacuation order but still had lots of smoke and ash and flying embers. Some of the news crews covering this are unbelievable. Last night a channel 7 van cut in front of me and parked to get footage of a burning palm tree. One fucking tree! The fire dept. had to finally push them back.

I just heard they're not ruling out Arson in these fires.
Not to be an alarmist, but wouldn't a massive, organized arson like this be a great terrorist attack? CA has a massive economy. Causing huge fires like this further depletes money and resources.
Probably just some fucked up white kid though.
Or a gopher.

I was out hiking Sunday all day and saw the smoke starting from the Harris fire, and then later in the day, the Witch Creek fire..
I almost got trapped in Julian, all the roads were blocked except 79, so I ended up driving through Warner Springs up to Temecula and back around that way.

Amazing Point 1: Firefighters from all over the state have gone down there to fight this.
Amazing Point 2: A Red Cross worker said this was one of the most civil mass evacuations he's ever seen, with people helping each other out in ways big and small.
Every once in a while, California is able to overcome its flakiness.
Glad you're okay, Mr. X. I was gonna do a post today asking what you were up to.

I'll give you the same advice I gave to New Orleans and that I use myself when the need arises: Nature is coming and you're not badder than Nature. Get Out! If you're too stupid to leave, then you get what you get for staying.

I have seen a couple clowns spraying their house down with water. Is that efective or even legal in a case like this?
...if it was my house I probably would do the same...
