San Diego:

Six undocumented Mexican immigrants* were arrested today by U.S. Border Patrol agents at Qualcomm Stadium, after a report that they were stealing food and water meant for evacuees, according to spokesman Damon Foreman.

San Diego police responded to a call about alleged theft from the evacuation center and encountered six people in a van who didn't speak English and didn't have California driver's licenses, Foreman said. The police officers called the Border Patrol, who arrived at the stadium and made the arrests, he said. Foreman said the immigrants admitted they were Mexican citizens and that they were stealing.

Border Patrol agents are not looking for illegal immigrants at the center but will continue responding to police calls for assistance.

"We are not in any means at Qualcomm for enforcement capacity," he said. "We are not there to take advantage of a situation."

Foreman said the agents have been helping in the evacuation and rescue effort in addition to carrying out their main duties.

"We are dedicated to our primary mission to securing our borders," he said.

-----------------------------------------

*undocumented Mexican immigrants- is PC talk for filthy illegal immigrant wetbacks, not that all illegal immigrants are filthy wetbacks, but when they steal food and water from a shelter they are.

I got that from your statement about people on Welfare because it pays more. Why should the minimum wage put you below the poverty line, and even below Welfare payments?

You want people off Welfare, you make it worthwhile by paying a living wage.

Now, if you DON'T want to pay a real living wage, you can't complain about people taking Welfare instead because they are better off.

You and your Republican buddies rail against "liberals" for not having solutions, but you can't come up with a simple one either. You want people off Welfare? Make jobs pay more. It really is that fucking simple.

-------------------

The govt doesn't have to "make jobs pay more". If we take illegals out of the equation businesses will have to pay enough for it to be worth while otherwise people won't work.

I don't think some shmoe flipping burgers deserves 9 dollars an hour. I think someone working outside doing hard work deserves more. If these jobs aren't being filled by illegals then companies will pay americans enough to make it worth while. We don't need to legslate and micromange a solution (although I am fond of linking minimum wage to congressional pay).

------

should start by fining companies that use illegal labor then. if they actually pay more in fines per laborer than they do to hire a legal worker they won't use illegal labor.

congress pay is absurd. two terms and lifetime yearly salary my ass. they don't even show up to fucking vote for everything.

assholes.

indo - i don't think you realize how horrible working in food service is.

no it doesn't take a lot of manual or mental skill, but christ it takes the patience of a saint with those working conditions..

problem when minimum wage goes up is the cost of everything else goes up. so it's necessary but self defeating. a livable wage, or at least poverty level wage, would be about $8.20/hr for a 40 hour week. however full time is set at above 32 hours a week and most business will not give benefits before a full time schedule is reached.

except paying employees more requires leveling out the cost of goods and services.

the economy and division of wealth need to be worked over in more ways than just raising minimum wage.

Balance of Taxes and Benefits

On average, low-skill immigrant households received $30,160 per household in immediate government benefits and services in FY 2004, including direct benefits, means-tested benefits, education, and population-based services. By contrast, low-skill immigrant households paid only $10,573 in taxes. Thus, low-skill immigrant households received nearly three dollars in benefits and services for each dollar in taxes paid.

If you do that, minimum wage will go up by 10% every 2 years, indo....6 now would be much cheaper in the long run.

------------------

I don't really think it will ever pass, nor do I think it is realistic, I just know it pisses congressmen off, and shows how absurd their pay raises are.

So a $6 raise in the minimum wage gets your vote?

------------------

How the hell did you get that from my response?

if we take illegals out of the picture, by enforcing current laws, not giving them any aid (medicine, schools etc), and cracking down on those who employ them the market will balance itself out.

if we do have labor shortages after that I am all for increasing and/or fast tracking immigration from mexico, as long as no special treatment is given to people who broke laws to come here.

$200 billion for a war we can't win. I mean really can't. There is no way to defeat an abstract concept. And that is PER YEAR now. $8 billion for illegals. Every year of war (going on #5) = 25 years of immigration non-issues.

For fuck's sake, we've spent how many TRILLIONS on war/warmongering/depleting our soldiering population and you're worried about a few billion because someone wants to clean port-o-lets for $10 an hour?

You complain about the drain illegals are on our society. How many of them pay taxes using a fake social security number, working jobs harder and cheaper than their American counterparts would? There's a reason that construction costs have skyrocketed in areas that immmigration crackdowns have happened. There a reason construction jobs get finished late when we let "hard-working" Americans do it.

It's because, despite yours and every other Republicans arguments to the contrary, Americans don't want to work the way illegal or undocumented or whatever you want to call them Mexicans do. They don't want to work 8-10 hours a day for $10 an hour. In fact, they won't. They'll complain that "wetbacks" are taking their jobs, when they won't take the jobs that are available.

No matter how you rant to the contrary, they aren't doing jobs Americans want. Hell, let's take all the legal immigrants and stick them in shit jobs so that REAL citizens can have the real jobs. See how McCallum feels about this issue then.
------------------

They do it for $10 dollars an hour because it is under the table and they get free health/road/law enforcement/etc services. It is a joke that they pay taxes, they just claim 10 dependents, get all their money and never file.

If construction costs are higher without immigrants than so be it. I am ok for labor getting paid a little more. Letting in illegals who will work for crap puts more citizens on welfare (yes some are chronically unemployed, but a 2-6 dollar swing makes a big difference for a lot of people).

to conor - open immigration that still required registration.

you signed your name on a piece of paper and said here i am. and nowadays there are a million fucking steps to immigration to protect citizens and legal immigrants. criminal checks, chest xrays, innoculations, the list goes on.

maybe you don't know this about mexico but they have day labor passes. they get a pass, they are registered and identified. they come across the border to work and go home at the end of the day after earning fair wages, in america, legally.

open immigration sure, but health and safety risk to current inhabitants? not so much. we've eradicated a lot of diseases that flourish in other places. we don't want rapists and murderers to cross the borders or fly in or boat in and stay here.

the cops can find me, i have records. i want them to be able to find ANYONE that commits a crime. i don't want tuberculosis, small pox or any number of other communicable diseases that people carry from other countries and that we stop at the border when they try to enter legally until they pass that health inspection.

i don't want a murderer hiding out in my country, we have enough of our own. the difference being someone who's born here or who moves here with a paper trail can be named and found.

there are too many holes with travel visas, and it's too hard for people who come here the RIGHT way to become citizens. why should we give them special treatment for not going through the process that other people have to? why should we support their children in our education system when they don't pay taxes? why should they get healthcare at a free clinic but an american citizen can't get that because they have a social security number?

legal immigration fine.

and crap if you want to nitpick over this, let's point out that tax dollars paid to city and states pay for firefighters and emergency workers in times like this. these 6 men probably paid NOTHING into the system they were offered freely and then abused.

in short: fuck them.

Because the policy of more or less open immigration was what built this nation? Just about everyone with immigrant parentage from the 1840s on is a descendant of unskilled, undereducated, and unwanted laborers.

-------------------------

Undereducated, and unwanted maybe, but most people came here with some sort of trade. Farming was in huge demand then and without modern technology it took a lot more "skill" to do effeciently.

The world was a different place in 1840's. Just because the nation had room and was helped by immigration that doesn't mean we have to keep that policy forever. We still had slavery in 1840's does that mean it is stilla good policy today? How about women voting?

what I hate are illegal immigrants who think because there are so many of them that it is ok.

Ditto.

Before anyone brands me a racist do remember that my neighborhood is 70% Latino, and compared to the whites and blacks in that area the Latinos are AWESOME. Where I live they work hard, they look after their families, and they don't fuck around and cause trouble. If I had to another part of California I would seek out another Latino neighborhood like the one I am in.

I missed the valerie Plame comment.

I thought it was dirty pool, but he has the power to decide what covert info can be released so it was well within the whitehouses power to release that info. I don't even get upset about it because she was not in a position where the release of that info could have hurt her. I can see her point as a whistle blower with the info she had, but there is no way she knew everything about the situation. it is like if i was an undercover cop trying to buy drugs from a suspect. Just because the suspect didn't sell to me doesn't mean he isn't selling. She found no evidence of attempts to buy yellow cake, doesn't mean that others didn't (although I wouldn;t be suprised if thewy fabricated it).

My apologies for assuming you are a Paulite.

We are not substantially less free than we were 8 yrs ago. You have no expectation of privacy if you call over seas, and US operatives are freely allowed to listen to those calls if the listening "station" isn't technically in the US. Yeah traveling may be more of a pain in the ass, but US security and "annoyances" have trailed behind the rest of the western world for years.

The only citizen who has been hurt by the change in the laws was Joesph Padilla. And what they tried to do to him was overturned by the courts. I think that case is a shining example of the rule of law still being there. Bush is isn't closer a king than Clinton was.

I appreciate people who are concerned over the patriot act. I have concerns too, but I don't see a decrease in my rights, or any other american's rights. fear mongering over loss of rights, to me, is just as silly as fear mongering over terrorists.

Here's where I stand politically.

Our president is corrupt and should have been removed from office over the Valerie Plame issue and his inaction and incompetence surrounding it.

Ron Paul is a joke.

So is Obama, Clinton, Giuliani, Romney, and everyone else the corporations force down our throats.

We are substantially less free than we were 8 years ago, and if Bush (and all of Congress) and their corporate backers have their way, it's only gonna get worse. Bush has acted and continues to act like he is the end-all ruler of the US and will not answer to anyone. This includes Congress and the courts.

His end run around even the secret FISA courts proves that the US is moving to a system of government MUCH closer to a monarchy than you or anyone else wants to admit. Sure, we have a Congress to pass laws, but they only apply to the citizenry. There are few protections from the government.

As a result of all this, no. I will NOT call the US free. I will call it less repressive than elsewhere because that is what it is. The US has, since the 80s, moved away from inalienable rights (remember that phrase) to "we'll grant you rights unless we want to ignore them and good luck getting political appointees to back you."

I'm not saying I can, off the top of my head, think of a "better" government but ours is getting progressively worse.

Now stop putting words in my fucking mouth, indo, before I start believing the "he works for the Bushies to push their agenda ZOMGQTFBBQ" crowd.

So since we can no longer allow unrestricted immigration the statue of liberty should be bombed? Great reasoning there Lou.

America still lets in more unskilled uneducated workers than any other country in the world. The only reason the Netherlands beats the US (per capita) is because they allow anyone who claims political refugee status (though there is a large push to change this due tot he problems it has been causing).

If we aren't free what country is? Absolute freedom doesn't exist. It is great to talk about but you can't point me to a society where it exists, because it is impossible. The US is far from perfect, but if you think it is that bad you need to grow the fuck up. the world isn't holding hands, and puppies and flowers. You think if the US wasn't involved in the middle east at all that it would be peaceful? You think if we had no military the world's problems wouldn't touch us?

Once again grow the fuck up, or if you really think it is that bad, do something about it. Where do you work? Why are wasting time on Uber if you are so opressed and could be sticking it to the man? Because you aren't opressed. You are a spoiled middle class kid who thinks it is cool to shit on the US. You have no understanding of the world outside of the US has done bad things, which it has, but that isn't the whole picture.

Let me guess you are a huge Ron paul fan, but don't know jack shit about what the gold standard would do to the economy. You are for gay and equal rights but have no problem with him being against it, or wiht him getting donations from stormfront.

And I quote:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

That is not true in the U.S. anymore. And if you think it is, you're drinking the Kool-Aid, my friend. Immigration is a non-issue. "But Hadley, we spend $8B a year on illegals!" Ok, great. That's what, 15 days of war in Iraq? Back the fuck out of Iraq and we're apparently swimming in money...

The fact is, America is not "of the People, by the People and for the People" anymore. It is of the Corporations, by the Corporations and for the Corporations. Welcome to the United States of Haliburton. But given the pictures of your job, flying in military choppers and toting large weapons, that no doubt appeals to you. Constant war which CREATES the enemies it claims to want to defeat gives you amazing job security.

Don't lecture about "benign immigration laws." It is something we claim to cherish and even at one time believed in. Now the Statue of Liberty needs to be bombed BECAUSE nothing it represents is true. We don't want anyone's huddled masses, we want their educated and fuck the huddled masses. We aren't free, we're just less repressed.

Fuck you, and fuck our government.

Uneducated and unskilled people are allowed in the US. Just not all of them.

--------------

These weren't hungry people stealing from a supermarket. they were stealing from a evacuee center, where people had nowhere else to go were relying on for food and shelter. Illegals were welcome there, but they chose to steal. Jack put up another link that talks about how they were taking this stuff to sell. I probably should have elaborated more in my post, but I assumed most people (in the US at least) were familiar with this. I used this story because even though these people are the scum of the earth, the article still bends over backwards with PC double speak and refuses to call them illegals.

If they want security enter the country legally.

____________________________

I have to think that there's a whole lot more to it than that. Granted, I know absolutely NOTHING about what it takes to legally enter this country and obtain U.S. citizenship. It seems to me, however, that if it was a simple choice between going through door #1 legally or through door #2 illegally, the benefits of legal entry would result in no logical person choosing door #2.

I don't think there are any advantages to being illegal, besides not paying taxes. Then again, I'm sure that the shitty, low paying jobs you'd have to take because you don't have a SSN would more than counteract the savings of not paying taxes.

In any case, punishing petty theft of a few hundred dollars of food with death would be considered excessive, even for a muslim country. You must really dislike brown people.

I don't get it. When Irish immigrants came here packed on boats like rats, and when they stole, it was just America developing into a country..

But somehow it's worse because this lot is Mexican? I fail to see a difference.

Yeah they stole, it was wrong. But they were probably starved and needed to be in a shelter anyway. Anyone would to feed their family, myself included.

They're leaving a harsh country to try and start a new life, it was ok in the 1700s, but why not now?

--

Is this a serious question?

The country was just developing then, and didn't have the hundreds of millions it has now. Now the infrastructure will be strained to the breaking point if we continually allow.... aw fuck it, go back to school.

PS - In the 1700s it was okay to

Split open a goat and read your future in its guts
Burn an old lady at the stake just because she lived alone and the crops went bad
Hang a 10 year old boy if he stole a loaf of bread
Cut open a vein and bleed out ill humors, bad spirits, etc.

There weren't many huge boatloads of Irish coming over in the 1700. America wasn't America till 1776. The Irish began in waves because of the potato famine in the mid-1800's. They were processed through Ellis Island (such as it was at the time) and were deemed citizens by the reigning government of whitey. They also spoke the language. Sort of.

Wetbacks jumping the border isn't the same thing. I won't say anything about them stealing jobs from honest Americans or anything, because that's ridiculous. Yeah, if there were no mexicans around, there would be more jobs, but they're crappy jobs that nobody wants to do anyway. But they don't speak the language, they can't communicate with the "natives" to the area, they can rarely read and write. They are not an asset to our country, yet they sneak in by the hundreds of thousands yearly. That is illegal activity.

Besides... aren't pretty much all Mexicans Catholic anyway? And too poor for birth control? If they hate their country so much, bloody rebellion. Instead of taking what others have worked for, make what you have better.

Alright. Nobody is going to stop the immigration.

It's good for American big business, particularly agribusiness, which demands cheap (and hardworking, I might add) labor.

It's also good for a number of small businesses, who hire the illegals and pay them a pittance. I sometimes work with contractors who hire nobody buy non-English speakers. (I only assume they're illegal, however.)

Neither Mexico, nor the US and multinational corporations really *want* the standard of living raised significantly in Mexico. This would mean higher wages as well as, eventually, a more powerful lower class (yes, I said "class"), and well you can just fuck that. What incentive does business have relocating to Mexico if they have to pay a livable wage? With such miserable conditions as there are in much of Mexico, the people wanting to leave will only grow with natural population increase.

Those fuckers breed like fuckin' maggots. In part, you can blame the fuckin' Church. But only in part.

Who is most against immigration in the US? American traditionalists. Not the Republicans in power. Not the Democrats in power. Not big business, who runs the whole show.

Nothing wrong with being an American traditionalist, but in this fight, you've got nobody with any real power on your side. Good luck trying the fight the tide with a few ranchers on quad-runners and the Border "Patrol." Nice going with the fence too. A fucking fence. Jesus Christ.

Best try to adapt gracefully. Your grandchildren are going to be part Hispanic.

I wish they'd fix our server.

I fail to see how this is America's, or any American citizen's, fault that some illegal mexicans came to our country to steal our stuff and get caught. Don't they have food and water to steal in mexico?

P.S. Notice the capitolization of America and the lack of capitolization in mexico...that's how much I care about some stupid wetbacks.

So they cut a line, maybe they even knew they could have gotten it legally - are they committing genocide? And I would say that the federal government could take the hit better than a mom and pop grocery/deli store.

Actually bi-lingual signs made it pretty clear that they were welcome.

No they aren't comitting genocide, but in a crisis situation like that people who do cut lines, or steal, or take more than their share should get more punishment than in regular times, not less.

I am sure the fed could take the hit, but what about the people in the center? How long do you think it owuld have supplies if every tard who thought he deserved it could drive ny and take whatevr supplies they wanted?

Labeling people as a labelist because they label you, then talking about hypocrites. I love it.

Immigrants are people, too. Illegal or legal. If you're starving and need food, you do what is necessary to survive. However, they could have just asked for food instead of stealing it. I mean, 6 immigrants steal food, say one or two more see them stealing so they go and steal... other people see more people stealing.. see what I'm getting at here? It could have snowballed into a riot but it didn't. It's really not that big of an issue when you think about it. Homeless people stealing free food from other homeless people when they could have just asked and gotten it anyways.

I think the real problem is Mexico is such a shit hole that it forces its own citizens to run to America in search of a better life. That's what America was founded on, though. People running from tyranny and oppression to find a better life. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness doesn't apply to only people with light colored skin and the proper paperwork. It applies to everyone. Maybe if Mexico wasn't such a mess, people would like living there. Place the blame on the Mexican government for creating this shit-storm. Don't blame starving human beings who are trying to survive and make a living.

Grow up.

I think most illegals are here for a better life and probbably want to contribute, unfortunately many illegals are her to break the law. Look at how many illegal immigrants are in california's (almost half) jails, and that is not even taking into account the laws they broke by just entering this country. Across the nation illegal immigrants make up almost 1/5 of the prisoners. These aren't people locked up for being here illegally, they are people who came here and committed a felony. The news should be reporting this every night.

Discount airlines fly migrants to U.S. border

By Chris Hawley, USA TODAY

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-10-11-migrant-air_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

MEXICALI, Mexico — New Mexican discount airlines are using rock-bottom fares to cater to legal and illegal migrants heading for the USA.

The airlines — known among fliers as Aeromigrante, or "Migrant Air" — take passengers from central or southern Mexico to cities along the northern border such as Tijuana and Mexicali. From there, customers make their way across the U.S. border.

The flights are part of a booming services industry for the estimated 13 million Mexican and Central American migrants who reside in the USA. Passengers who used to make bus trips of several days can arrive at the border well-rested for the often dangerous crossing.

Return flights south are often nearly empty of passengers, and some routes offer only one-way service. One of the airlines, Tijuana-based Avolar, estimates that 70% of its customers have the USA as their final destination.

"The most productive routes we have are cities where you have those passengers who are traveling with the idea of the American dream," said Luis Ceceña, a company spokesman.

Other budget carriers such as Volaris, Interjet and Click have started operations in the past two years and make air travel affordable to poorer Mexicans. One-way flights to Tijuana from central Mexico cost about $150, half what they did a few years ago.

"It's much more comfortable than the bus, and about the same price," said Leopoldo Torres, 37, of Mexico City, as he stretched his legs aboard a Volaris flight to Mexicali. He and a traveling companion, Julio Menéndez, planned to cross into the USA illegally through the California desert.

Migrants said another factor driving them to fly is the difficulty of crossing the border as the United States builds fences and adds Border Patrol agents. Smugglers who aid their journey have doubled their fees to $2,000 or more, making an airline ticket seem less expensive, said Guillermo Hernández of Guerrero.

Some airlines try to get even more migrant business. Avolar offers Greyhound bus connections from Tijuana to Fresno, where many migrants work on farms. Aero California takes payments through Western Union, used by many migrants to send money home.

Ceceña said the airlines should not be responsible for policing their passengers. "We have a saying in Mexico: 'Let the other hens cackle; you take care of your own eggs,' " he said. "It's a good business for us, and we're going to keep taking care of those customers."

(Hawley is Latin America correspondent for USA TODAY and The Arizona Republic.)

ok indo, here's a hypothetical for you

you are one of the six..um...what did you call them...dirty wetbacks. ok you're one of them and you are hungry, tired, without food or a job or money and you stumble upon a large pile of foodstuffs and water. no one is watching the supplies and even if they were you wouldn't want to talk to them because they might start asking questions and you are undocumented. So here you are, seeing more than enough food..i mean obviously right because no one is eating it or watching so you take some. not much but enough to fill your starved belly.

should i burn you alive?

or should i maybe talk to you and say 'hey look man, we're not arresting people here today we're feeding them. you don't have to steal, we'll give you some you don't have to take it.'
--------------------

That is a great scenario, but complete BS. You have no basis for the food being alone or out in the open. How do you know there is more than enough there, do you know how many people they have to feed in the center? I am guessing you aren't from california, or haven't been watching any news about those centers. There are signs in spanish everywhere.

Even if your scenario was true, I still say fuck them. They deserve to be arrested. It is still a dangerous situation and people running around like animals stealing anything they want could cause a lot of trouble.
