I'm headed to my local friendly guitar center to buy some groceries. I recently aquired an American-made Fender Strat and am looking for that extra push of sound. I know I want a tube amp, possible a Peavy Valveking 212 or a Fender DSP 212. But I'm open to suggestions...
I'd like to be that guy that supports his local businesses, but Guitar Center, even in the heart of Nashville, still offers the best quality equipment for the lowest price. Fuck my local businesses. I want to make some good sound, not assist my local expensive guitar shop by paying them out the ass for regular equipment.
Anyway, I'll also be buying a PA system, interested in the Sure SM58 w/ cable.
Any suggestions?
And no, Shlongy, I am not a musician from 1978 and your knowledge might not be appropriate.
Any "I don't know what the fuck you just said, litle man..." comments, feel free to -2 below.

Apparently the stock speakers on the valveking suck, check it out before you buy i guess. There are some neat laney valve combos around too, the LC-30 and VC-30.
_______________
Yeah I plugged into the valveking and didn't like it as much as the DSP. Maybe it's because the price sticker was right there...and screaming 300 bucks more than the Fender.
I still need to pick up the SM58 and the crybaby wah I'm gonna get, and just didn't wanna blow my load all in one day.
Maybe next week.

WHATEVER YOU DECIDE TO BUY, MAKE SURE IT HAS TUBES.
They sound better.
THAT'S SHLONGY'S EXPERT ADVICE.

Shure's a sure thing, both SM58 and SM57. Like CT said.
I'm playing a VOX amp and a Carlsbro Valve amp.
Different folk, different taste.

I have a few old fender amps, the 72 twin is my fave.
Fender makes a new vesion that is pretty convincing.
I also have a Line 6 stomp box with a tube drive inside it's got a lot of effects for the price.
Line 6 makes a cool tube amp that can be dialed to sound like almost anything.
I still love my cry baby and my tube screamer.

Our guitarist currently has a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue that he swears by. He also uses his Fender Hotrod sometimes when he wants a more gritty, beefy sound. Depends on the acoustics of the room we're in.
He is looking to make a change and has been talking about Allan amps. You may want to look into those. They are custom built for your needs. Check it out.

For your PA, get a Kustom. An older one. No digital.
For your amp, go with either a Vox AC30, or almost anything from Orange.

I forgot to comment on the PA system...
I used SM57s and SM58s for years with my bands, and they still work just as well as they did new. Great mics for live performance. If you can afford the 58 Beta, get it - you won't be sorry.
Of course, if you want to do any serious studio recording, get a good condenser mic. But you wouldn't want that on the road unless it's a REALLY sturdy condenser, and even then I wouldn't recommend it for live performance over a good dynamic mic.

Stay far far away from Crate amplifiers...both tube or solid-state. I have had more problems with them than I can count on my fingers.
As for tube amps, I used to have a Peavey Classic 2x12, and it handled every style of music quite nicely, especially with 6L6GC tubes in it. Loud as hell when the gain is cranked, too. Marshalls are good for rock/blues, of course. I don't know much about Fender amps, I've never played through one.
HOWEVER...I would absolutely recommend a Carvin amplifier over any of the above. Their tubes and solid state amps are extremely versatile if you do any sort of music besides rock/blues, and handle well on the road. You probably won't find them at Guitar Center, unfortunately, but I would strongly encourage you to find one if you can and give it a try.
Also, if you are at all open to considering a solid-state digital amp, take a look at the higher-end Line6 amps...good stuff and you really can't beat their modeling.

I use a Digitech GSP5 (old school) effects processor with a Peavey RockMaster 3-channel tube pre into a TubeWorks ValveState 2x50 stereo power amp driving a couple 12" Celestions in a pawnshop Crate 100w 212 combo amp (in which the amp section is fried so I'm just using it as a cab). I play a '69 ES335 and a '79 American Strat hardtail (and occasionally up to 13 others) through that rig and it sounds pwnsome on jazz, blues, and 70's rock.
