I lie awake, motionless, waiting for the dawn.
Thoughts enter my mind progressing in an endless stream.
The past unfolds, the intense drama, the mundane details.
All presented in a T.V.-like presentation with no commercial break or remote control.
A sound?
A creak. It is the subtle clicking of the air vents or the settling of the old house.
There is nothing to warrant investigation, the flow of images returns to my restless mind.
I re-visit a past event, a drunken thanksgiving, my then best friend lost his mind and tried to kill his wife. I intervened and chased him away. I later remember examining the loaded AK-47 in his bedroom. The strewn cartridges of a hasty attempt to lock and load, abandoned. My own weapon locked safely, useless in my vehicle.
Why? What saved our lives?
Was it the thought of his own children resting quietly in their beds? Unaware of the mêlée that was unfolding downstairs.
I will never know.
I feel anger, sadness, lingering doubt, and it passes into the night.
More ghosts will visit me tonight before the creeping grey dawn lights my room and the bastardly alarm sounds to end my vigil.
During the day I tangle with the endless bureaucracy .
In quiet moments I lean back in my padded office chair.
I dream of sleep.
