All right, I'm writing this straight in the submission box, out of my deep and abiding love for Atari 2600 Frogger. That game was fucking awesome, basically since it was the only one I was ever any good at. I kicked Frogger ASS on that thing and got high scores, even on the arcade version.

My friend Elona and I used to get our parents to take us down to the mall to play. Groups of kids would crowd around and watch as I worked my frogtastic magic. Actually, she was better than me since she actually had the Atari to practise on, but I spent all my time at her house honing my skills. And any time our skills ever faltered, there was always the reset button. "That was just a practise. This one's for real."

The tabletop version of it at the local Pizza Hut was super fun, too. Nothing is cooler than eating pizza off a table you're simultaneously playing video games on.

I also played a game at the arcade called Deathrace 2000. I don't think anyone else in the entire universe has heard of that game, but it was awesome since you got to mow kids down with racecars and little graves would pop up for every person you hit. It was probably banned. That was about the time heavy metal music started getting blamed for everything so video games inevitably got some blowback from that.

Anyway, the pure adrenaline of watching that little frog jump against the clock across those lanes of super heavy traffic on like, level five, then hitting the river and avoiding snakes and beavers and disappearing turtles? Wow. Get the girl-frog, eat the fly, avoid the crocodile (unless it was his tail.) That was more fun than Centipede, Pac Man, Asteroids, Phoenix, and all that shit for me. Oh, I loved those too, and also that racing game, what was it called? Pole Position! Pole Position rocked!!! But Frogger was my obsession.

When we moved to California we even bugged a local arcade so much that within a month they had ordered it for us. We were so proud.

Now I have an Atari 2600 system with the genuine faux-wood applique on front and 54 games, plus paddles and joysticks galore. but I can't figure out how to hook it up to my new widescreen TV. I know HBTS I'm a Luddite. I've got offers to hook it up, and when I do it's TOURNAMENT TIME! I don't know why I'm going so crazy over this but Beeltea's reviewing old ass computer shit so I figured so should I.

I bet everyone's got a favourite old game that they still secretly die over. And I bet I have them in my collection. SO LET'S PLAY!!!!!!

if you want to play frogger this is a fun one: http://www.startinglinks.net/games/frogger.html

hey, that didn't count. restart!.gif (13 kB)

+2, but Frogger was not really my game - Pitfall was the king of Atari games, follwed closely by Yars Revenge.
============

I was a fucking maniac at Yars Revenge. I used to get way up there in the levels to where it turned black and white, and then into color again after that..

That's when the swirly thing in the center was massively pissed off all the time and I'd get up there and fuck with it constantly.

Were the tabletop versions of arcade games standard in every pizza hut of the mid 80's?
Mine had Pac-Man instead.
I think it was later replaced by Ms. Pac-Man, the first in a never-ending series of blatantly cheap video game rip-offs.

Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

In between
What I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing there's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you it's just no good
You teasing like you do

Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide

IN 1981 Atari certainly did not suck. In 2007, one can certainly say that if you are applying it to the standards of today.

There were a few systems that sucked right out of the box. The Atari 7800 was pretty weak, the 5200 was so-so, the Sega Saturn was pretty bad...

That link is great. I may never work again.

Besides, when playing Frogger, you actually appear as though you could be working. Unfortunately, not with Asteroids. Too much space bar.

Speaking of full-size games, they're not that tough to get ahold of nowadays. About a year ago I bought a full-size Asteroids for my dad on ebay. You can get 80's era games for around the $300-400 range.

The only trick is to find one geographically close to you. Shipping costs on something that big and that heavy could easily exceed the price you paid for the game itself. But, if you are close enough to pick up the game yourself (assuming you know someone who owns a pickup truck), they can be quite a bargain.

River Raid 1942. I will own you.

Frogger was equally awesome... along with Pitfall.

Atari's hook into the aerial connection and you tune them. Buy an oldschool tv if you can't get it to work on the HDTV :) bet you can get a good 2ndhand one for 50 bucks tops.

I still love Scorched Earth on the Amiga.

Hmmmm. Don't know why it is giving you crap. If you're on a Windows machine do this:

Try this for a "real" frogger:

http://files.filefront.com/m32+062zip/;6245770;/fileinfo.html

Download m32-062.zip

Put it in a folder and then unzip it there.

Now, go to:

http://download.myarcadegames.com/leecheriffic/roms/

And download frogger.zip and place it into the folder you just created under the ROMS folder.
Download any other cool ones you see like pengo.zip, galaga.zip, etc.... put them all in the ROMS folder.

Now, go to that new folder and click the mame32.exe

I'm not sure if it updates automatically or not, you may have to hit F-5. Then click on "available". There will be a list of games on the right and you can double click them.

Remember this though: 5 = putting a quarter into the machine, 1 = 1 player, 2 = 2 players and ESC gets you back to the menu. Typical arrow keys for moving, control key for shooting.

You will never want to play that flash game again after playing frogger on mame.

rorrim, blarf is barf x 100.
everyone who thinks I'm too cute, *blush* thanks.
scourge, skrap, czj, conor: have you played deathrace though? do they still make it? it was pretty badass....
HBTS quit SAYING THAT!

Indiana Jones was too hard. Swinging over that pond=death.
Galaga was for the older kids. I don't think I ever even tried it.
I have joust, but haven't played it yet.
I never played anything on Commodore 64 in my life.
I have E.T. Has anyone ever played that? was that the first movie tie-in ever?

has anyone played the linked frogger game? it's AWESOME!!!!!!!!

If you people enjoy this rethro stuff that much, check out 'mame', the multi-arcade-machine-emulator , comes with all the classics you can think of, and includes the rest you haven't seen before. I lost some serious time on that package. Pacman is still as addicting as it ever was.

Also ; Hi, m! What does that 'blarf' mean ?

oh, yay! installation instructions. does something from 1982 or whatever work on something from 2006?

what i run it through? last time i played it was through a vcr but i have a new one of those too.

I run MINE through my tv, but you can go through almost anything.

These are the ports on the Tv/whatever you're plugging into.
http://www.tvorigin.com/images/InnerPageImages/faqs_clip_image004.jpg

I only used the cable imput on my switchbox. Those two wires on it probably don't apply to you.

These may help.

I will attempt to instruct you on your installation. I assume you have all the wires.

Everything on this entire system is set up in the style of square peg, round hole. You will not have a plug that fits in two places.

Red plug should be in the video input on your tv, or whatever you felt like running it through. It goes in a hole of the same color.

White wire should be in the white audio imput. There was only glorious mono sound, so enjoy it.

If you've never done this before, it should take 5 - 10 minutes (maximum) after you find the wires.

If you've done this before, it should only take as long as it takes you to find the wires.
