I generally get along well enough with people, at least on the surface level, to carry out my normal daily activities. I avoid fighting over inconsequential things and like to keep my cool. But there is one weakness that makes me flip my lid, and that is betrayal in any form.

I'm talking about being blatantly lied to by someone I trust, lies of omission that leave me feeling like a sucker, friends spreading my private information or doing hurtful and underhanded things behind my back, and cheating. I really do believe that friendships are built on trust, and once you lose it, it's hard to retrieve. I have a difficult time forgiving friends who have shown such a lack of integrity.

Since the truth is almost never as painful as learning I've been lied to, I would rather that people were brutally honest with me than hide things from me because they're afraid to hurt my feelings. This is how I try to treat other people—not that I've never lied, but I really make an effort to avoid lying about things that might be perceived as important to the other person. Consequently, my honesty can be interpreted as impoliteness by people who don't follow this principle and would rather smile to my face and gossip about me behind my back.

I also think that when you are in a relationship with someone, you have to be honest with both yourself and your partner in order for either of you to be happy. Which means that if monogamy is something you don't want, you need to be up front about it. It's easier to break up in the beginning because of dissimilar values than to deal with the guilt and drama caused by cheating.

Anyway, betrayal makes me lose my temper like nothing else can. When I find out about it, my heart beats fast and I get a burst of angry energy, I become callous, and I cut ties with the person for long periods of time or indefinitely, depending on how badly I've been hurt.

What is your weakness when it comes to dealing with other people? What is unforgivable behavior?

There is no great story behind it. I just dislike sneakiness. Why should I make myself vulnerable to friends I can't trust? It's not that hard to tell the truth. Some people are two-faced because they want to have their cake and eat it too, do you know what I mean? I want to be surrounded by people with integrity.

I can't deal with people who get angry over anything. It's puerile and contemptable. Adults should always be in control of themselves, to not be is a terrible sign of weakness.

stiff upper lip and all that? pip pip?

i detest manipulation. have no respect for cheaters either.

Gross amounts of hypocrisy. We all do it to some degree, but there are some people whose personal relationships revolve around it, and that upsets me greatly.

Also I think that Lisa needs to realise that even though I am an abject coward and an incorigable liar that I am extraordinarily cute when I do it. If my lying cowardice was personified it would be Johnny Depp stealing your underwear and brazenly claiming it was for Science.

honesty is important to everybody. we have all been lied to.

i think there is a ghost in my bathroom and im not even kidding. the toilet lid just fell shut and my light flickered. weird.
---------------------
Honesty isn't that important to me. People lie as a matter of course and even when people tell 'the truth' they can only really tell their perception of the truth.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong though? Many women I've spoken to who have expressed this love of honesty are just trying to say that they want nothing to do with gutless cowards or manipulative weirdos. That's fair enough and all, but I'd like to know just to be sure I've got it all correct in my head.

Your ghost is probably just a draft. I advise watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for tips on detecting the source of drafts.

This might seem like a funny question but I really want to know the answer; why is honesty so important to you? Were you lied to in the past? What happened?

If you don't want to put that out on Uber please email me the answer to yeastmonkey.at.hotmail.com

ive come to grips with the fact that most people are selfish and will be dishonest with me as it suits them, so i just get disappointed with anybody i catch in a blatant lie. its not really anger, but kind of a feeling of being let down because i always am optimistic for a person's trustworthiness.

what REALLY pisses me off is when people talk shit for absolutely no reason. i hate when people do this. i understand trash talking between friends and in sports and all that, but if its somebody i dont know and hes talking about my car or my friend's haircut or something, my heart rate spikes.

Passive aggressiveness makes my blood boil. Sometimes I think my boyfriend uses this against me, because no one could be that passive aggressive. Then we go to his family's house and I realize they are all that way. It's kind of strange how the thing I hate most in the world is what I end up with.

I guess it's along the same lines as the honesty thing. If you have a problem, say so, don't pull any passive aggressive bs with me.

Ah. And therein lies the quintessential problem of our information-addicted generation. How do we trust when we *know* that things will eventually and almost inevitably turn sour? I mean, it's cold logic which dictates that, once the warm feelings of a relationship are over and done with, that everyone involved will do their utmost to gain the upper-hand in any future dealings.

Acrimonious words, hurtful actions, High Drama. All examples of normal relationship fallout and I'll be good-gawdamned if I can see a way around it. It's one of the *many* reasons why I have extraordinary problems with relationships. Is it better to be alone, lonely and safe or exposed, vulnerable and loved?

I've always gone with the later, with very few exceptions. I'm so terribly lonely, but I don't have a fraction of the problems that many who were less...careful in their choices have.

I'm still trying to figure out if that makes it worth the price...

I know. I'm not a psycho who believes that none of my friends will ever lie to me, and basically everyone I know has made me feel a little betrayed at some point in time. It's just what hurts me the most, and if it's bad enough, I become irrationally angry.

I hate being lied too, also.
Still, in my profession, I've learned a great deal about people.
One thing that sticks out is that EVERYONE lies. Period. Mothers to children, Husbands to Wives, Brothers to Sisters.
In the end, the only way that I've been able to reconcile this discovery is to decide whether or not the person was lying out of maliciousness, laziness or out of a desire to spare another pain. All the mentioned motivations are still wrong, but have differing gradients of vileness.

Trust is SO hard to find in another. It has been said that once it is broken, it can never be forged again. I do not believe this. Life changes constantly, and friends are few and far between. If someone was untrue to you because they were scared, or made a mistake, things will change, but friendship is still possible. All that's really become different is that you understand that the other person isn't perfect (then again, who is?).

In short, I hate being lied too, but I have grown up enough to stop believing (and acting) in absolutes. I suggest that you do the same. Life become ever so much easier to deal with...
