Basically, if you're too lazy to read the article (and I bet you are), there is now a ban on the word "nigger". That's right, a word has been banned in Los Angeles.
For any of you who have read 1984, this should be scary already. Orwell taught us that to control people's language is to control their minds. (If there is no word for rebellion, how can one rebel?)
Luckily, there *happens* to be a little something in The Constitution known as freedom of speech, so the ban on the word is only symbolic.
So there is a symbolic ban on a word in Los Angeles. (Puts the "ball lick" into symbolic.)

And doesn't this only perpetuate racism. I mean, now I really feel like saying it, don't you? And if they ban "nigger" when do they ban "wetback"? How about if I'm offended by mean slang for Jewish people? When do they ban that? How about "cracka". Or is that not derogatory enough? What is then? How long is until every mean word is banned and everyone is forced to be nice?
But it's good to know that our city counsel is spending it's time well... On symbolically banning mean words. Later, they will put on their wizard hats and cast spells to symbolically cast spells.
MEANWHILE, there's a money crisis with LAUSD, public transit is pretty bad, there's tons of homelessness, crime, drugs... But none of these are as important as pretending to stop people from being mean.
Because it's sure to stop them.
If this law is ever enforced, I'm packing my bags and moving to Canada. I hope you'll all come with me.

There are already authors exploring the truths behind the slave trade; how it was ongoing before the Europeans ever arrived, how the Africans were the biggest beneficiary, and how many British died trying to put an end to it. Another 10 years and they'll be publishing the truth about why MLK died; nothing to do with civil rights, everything to do with his being an adulterous moron. As a 'Cracker', I would like to protest the symbolic banning of the word 'Nigger'. I do not often use the word 'Nigger' in conversation or in description of someone, but it is still a word in my lexicon. Here in America, where we have that ol' Freedom of Speech, I can say, "Nigger!" in the street without fear of legal reprisal, except, now, in Los Angeles. As a typical California over-sensitive ultragay PC backlash, I am concerned that the word 'Cracker' will also be banned. What then? What's a 'Cracker' to do?
In Indiana, the locals are called 'Hoosiers'. In Ohio, they're called 'Buckeyes'. In Florida, we're called 'Crackers'. Thus a black man living in Florida can be referred to as a 'Cracker'. As far as I know, the locals of no State are referred to as 'Niggers', but still; slippery slope and all that...
Because I don't want to know the reception/reaction response enough to do the verbal experiment, I have not accosted a black man in Florida with the words, "You're a Cracker!" or "Wazzup mah Cracker?" If any of you have or will, please let me know the result.

JESTER: Why do you feel the need for quotation marks around the word nigger? Its just a word. Its another way of saying idiot, ignorant person, or friend. Context pending of course. Otherwise you look like a sissy for being careful not to upset anyone by putting quotation marks around it, like its something special.

Don't worry about it; I live in Los Angeles, and everyone here says "nigger" constantly. I've yet to see anyone get a ticket for it.
Seriously, banning words is beyond retarded and will prove to be completely ineffective. You can't control language that way; it is too fluid. We'll just find a new word and make IT bad. All you have to do is start using it as a pejorative. Not long ago, "black" and "Negro" were the proper terms to use to describe people of African descent. What happened there? I'll tell you: some rednecks started using those terms with snotty tones in their voices while rolling their eyes.
The issue of slurs aside, what I think is ridiculous is when the TV news won't use an ethnic or racial term to describe a criminal suspect, even when they're asking for the public's help to find the person and it's an important clue. There's a fucking drawing of a black guy ON THE SCREEN and they won't say he's black. The other day, when describing a Mexican suspect, they said he had a heavy "Spanish" accent. Since when is "Mexican" a slur?? There's a huge difference between Mexican and Spanish accents (they don't even speak the same kind of Spanish), so that's misleading right there. TV is so stupid.

I'm sure the "ban," if real (because I'm too lazy to read "the article") is stupid as all get-out. But the way you argue your stand makes me want to support it. Good job.
Also, Ronald Reagan "taught" us that the Russians didn't have a word for "freedom." I, being only 14 or so, scratched my head and thought, "Well, that doesn't make any sense. I go to school with a girl named T. Svaboda, and she told me her name was Russian for "freedom."
So here were my options:
1) T. Svaboda was lying, which I knew couldn't be true, because she had wonderfully smallish boobs;
2) Ronald Reagan was lying, which...hey...he'd done that before;
3) Ronald Reagan was an idiot, and he just thought he was telling the truth.

They shouldn't have banned it. They should have written a new law: "If you say the word 'nigger' we'll throw you in jail and fine you $5,000. Oh, we'll also place 'hate crime' on your permanent record. You'll also be placed on a 'racist watchlist' preventing you from finding employment." That would have been much more effective, and legal.
