She knows he's a boy
with no arms, but hands
growing out his back
in stegosaurus pattern
along the ridge of his spine.
All the hands, opening
and closing, clutching at air,
a gentle pattering of soft flesh
fingers hitting soft flesh palms.
He chases and she scuttles so
like a squirrel, up her tree
where she sits well beyond his
reach, hands growing
out her chest, as many as he,
bursting through soft white skin, constantly
giving, flat-handed,
offering. Forever she is lifting
herself up by splintered branches,
up toward the white sky
escaping, wary of all
the stegosaurus boys who wait
for her to leave her spindly tree.
She stays there until
hunger shrivels her
hands and they crumble
like ash, scattering seed.
When she finally climbs down,
she is alone
at the base of her tree.
