I was on Youtube recently when I saw this video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8XGjkyZU2oY

Just as a short summary, it's a recreation of the bombing of Hiroshima, using both actual footage and digital recreation. The graphics are fantastic, but what's better is the survivors recalling the day, the bodies in the streets, being blasted by the shock wave. Living only miles from New York, I envisioned a huge mushroom cloud rising from the skyline.

I searched around a bit more, and found some cool links.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=H1sS1TmXF38&feature=related - Russia's first nuclear bomb.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=b2WQvtGnBQw - An unbelievably large underwater explosion

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tJkNP7HNHz4 - Another crazy underwater explosion

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FfoQsZa8F1c&feature=related - Tsar Bomba, the largest nuke ever tested.

There's some more videos of these creepy tests where they filmed a bunch of lifelike mannequins inside a home, while setting off a nuke nearby, to see the inside catch fire and all the mannequins burn and crumble...but the Tsar Bomba one is the video that inspired this post. At the end, they showed a map of London, and how much of it would be destroyed.

I did some research:
15 miles in all directions from ground zero - gone, completely incinerated
30 miles in all directions from ground zero - burned and destroyed by shock wave
55 miles in all directions from ground zero - shock wave damage

With trusty google earth, I plotted out the nuclear fates of several cities. Anyway, the pictures are at the bottom. Here's a few more youtube links that I have in my favorites.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=yVE81BHBD0E - One of my favorite movie scenes, the climax of the movie Deep Impact.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EngAbLGIaYE - What a crazy guitarist this man is...something of a role model for me.

http://www.emogame.com/v3/ - Fairly interesting enough, and quite addicting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rQzsqrkbrU - If you watch anything, watch this. The original movie Joan of Arc, made in France in 1928. It's about 80 minutes, and was revolutionary in character acting.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=1flVlL4Mf8k - A cool explosion!

Anyway, check it out.

You conjure up great memories of my early days as a ringleader of destruction. It is my pleasure to announce to you that you have been considered to be a possible ally in my Dubious Crime Assassination Squad.

As a token of my appreciation, I hand you this +1. Use it wisely. You are welcome to pledge as soon as Open Enrollment starts. If you get accepted, I will personally hand you a +2 whenever I come across a good post with your moniker on it.

According to the Intarweb, Tsar Bomba (Big Ivan) was a 50 Megaton equivalancy. Hiroshima was ~20 Kilotons, or 1/2500 smaller.

Way back in the late 60s there were 100 Megaton devices. Axolotl had his math together. Do youse guys in Canadia know math?

i didn't know this was in comparison with the Tsar Bomba since I didn't read the post, only looked at the graphics. sue me.

Caulaincourt: to answer I'm just using the data provided in the youtube video about the Tsar Bomb, where it shows at the end London being burned in a 110-mile wide circle. It might not be correct, but just in the context of this post, I'm using the information the video gave.

i rest my case.

they don't make nukes like these anymore. it was fucking dumb

Much more likely, of course, is a single big blast in the air sending out an EMP. Goodbye USA (and southern Canada) when records of every imaginable sort are wiped out in a flash.

btw, where do you get your info that the blasts travels 110 miles?
even your yellow line (partial/complete destruction) is halfway there.

wtf? that's one hell of a fucking bomb you're talking about.

what you refer to as your blue circle (light damage) had a radius of about 12 miles in hiroshima.

now mind you bombs are larger today, but from what i read, most of the desctruction occurs within 10 miles.

last i checked nyc and l.a. were pretty big cities. unless my perception is wrong, i fail to see how a nuke would rape so much land. does the shockwave brings a snack for the long trip?

please link your sources in your picture posts.

caul this is an unreasonable request. why should he 'dumb down' to the lowest common denominator in his posts.

just beacuse you are fucking ignorant of the power of nuclear weapons doesn't mean the rest of us should read an 'early learning centre' precis.

i thought tactical nuke strategy was that they use a bunch of little bombs instead of one big one, that way in case one doesn't work you're not left with a functioning major city, but just a little less damage instead.

cool though-t exercise though

Nukes are cool and all, but, apples and oranges, man. Hiroshima was tame compared to Dresden (albeit hey, yeah, in one bomb). Those circles on google earth images match up nicely to what a good ol' Soviet style Cold War tritium-powered love-in would give you, but not at all to the Paul Tibbets special.

Plus, hey, you drew a cyan line through my parents' house. But you missed Brookhaven Lab, so, nyah nyah nyah, the US relativistic heavy ion colliding capability is unaffected by the godless commie treachery.

On the plus side though, a small nuclear device, particularly a 'dirty bomb' that might be detonated by 'terrars' wouldn't be THAT bad. It wouldn't be good, certainly, and it'd make a tremendous mess but if someone were to detonate a small nuke in Birmingham I'm confident that me and mine would be okay.

In fact it'd sort out that eyesore in the bullring. That wouldn't be so bad. So, you know, bring it.

*lewd complicated hand gesture*

FUCK THE EAST COAST
------------------------------
You know you're from Chicago if:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Grachki (grach'-key): Chicagoese for "garage key" as in, "Yo,Theresa, waja do wit da grachki? Howmy supposta cut da grass if I don't git intada grach?"

2. Sammich: Chicagoese for sandwich. When made with sausage, it's asassage sammich; when made with shredded beef, it's an Italian Beefsammich, a local delicacy consisting of piles of spicy meat in aperilously soggy bun.

3. Da: This article is a key part of Chicago speech, as in "Da Bears" or"Da Mare" -- the latter denoting Richard M. Daley, or Richie, as he'soften called.

4. Jewels: Not family heirlooms or a tender body region, but a popularname for one of the region's dominant grocery store chains. "I'm goin'to the Jewels to pick up some sassage."

5. Field's: Marshall Field, a prominent Chicago department store. AlsoCarson Pirie Scott, another major department store chain, is simplycalled " Carson's."

6. Tree: The number between two and four. "We were lucky dat we only gottree inches of snow da udder night."

7. Over by dere: Translates to "over by there," a way of emphasizing asite presumed familiar to the listener. As in, "I got the sassage at theJewels down on Kedzie, over by dere."

8. Kaminski Park : The mispronounced name of the ballpark where theChicago White Sox (da Sox) play baseball. Comiskey Park was renamed U.S.Cellular Field (da Cell)

9. Frunchroom: As in, "Get outta da frunchroom wit dose muddy shoes."It's not the "parlor." It's not the "living room." In the land of thebungalow, it's the "frunchroom," a named derived, linguists believe, from "front room."

10. Use: Not the verb, but the plural pronoun 'you!' "Where use goin'?"

11. Downtown: Anywhere near The Lake, south of The Zoo (Lincoln ParkZoo) and north of Soldier Field.

12. The Lake : Lake Michigan. (What other lake is there?) It's oftenused by local weathermen, "cooler by The Lake."

13.??

15. Goes: Past or present tense of the verb "say." For example,
"Den he goes, 'I like this place'!"

16. Guys: Used when addressing two or more people, regardless of eachindividual's gender.

17. Pop: A soft drink. Don't say "soda" in this town. "Do ya wanna cannapop?"

18. Sliders: Nickname for hamburgers from White Castle , a popularMidwestern burger chain. "Dose sliders I had last night gave me daruns."

19. The Taste: The Taste of Chicago Festival, a huge extravaganza inGrant Park featuring samples of Chicagoland cuisine which takes placeeach year around the Fourth of July holiday.

20. "Jeetyet?": Translates to, "Did you eat yet?"

21. Winter and Construction: Punch line to the joke, "What are the twoseasons in Chicago?"

22. Cuppa Too-Tree: is Chicagoese for "a couple, two, three" whichreally means "a few." For example, "Hey Mike, dere any beerz left in dacooler over by dere?" "Yeh, a cuppa too-tree."

23. 588-2300: Everyone in Chicago knows this commercial jingle and thecarpet company you'll get if you call that number -- Empire!

24. Junk Dror: You will usually find the 'junk drawer' in the kitchenfilled to the brim with miscellaneous, but very important, junk.

25. Southern Illinois : Anything south of I-80. This is where Smothers'is from....

26. Expressways: The Interstates in the immediate Chicagoland area areusually known just by their 'name' and not their Interstate number: theDan Ryan ("da Ryan"), the Stevenson, the Kennedy (da "Kennedy"), theEisenhower (da "Ike"), and the Edens (just "Edens" but Da Edens" isacceptable).

27. Gym Shoes: The rest of the country may refer to them as sneakers orrunning shoes but Chicagoans will always call them gym shoes!

My Grandfather was a photographer in the US Navy. He took pictures of many of the nuclear tests. He's dead now; died of cancer of the everything. Imagine that. I have one of the photos, taken in the Bikini Atoll. A huge 'mushroom cloud' surrounded by two rings of ships, with the beach in the foreground. It's awesome, and I mean 'awesome' in the traditional sense, not in the way that curly fries are awesome if you're high. Some things should probably not have been thought of, and nuclear weapons are one of those things.

I think he meant look up his work, Jack. Not look him up in the yellow pages.

Cool post.

Then he should have written this in past tense, "He writes books, and like, studies things."

Jack's just pissed that I'm not impressed by his writing.

Or his ability to use Google.

You should look up Carl Sagan (I think that's his name, I could be wrong) if you have any kind of interest in Nuclear Winter theories.

He writes books, and like, studies things.

Cool guy.

Here's hoping they drop it on the weekend, or after 5pm.

Nice work, kid. Thought-provoking stuff.

If you can track it down, the BEST true-to-life what if the bombs fell movie ever made in a UK production called 'Threads.' It makes the American TV movie 'The Day After' look like a Disney flick. Threads is rarely seen in America, but was shown in the UK and Canada. It is depressing and engrossing in its realism. Not gory, but bleak as hell.

Yeah, MS paint paintbrush was the only way to properly go about it. It leaves it with a gritty, post-apocalyptic feeling.
