The pork was just in the wrong places. An extra $10B for social services breaks the budget. And extra $650B for non-Iraq, non-Afghanistan Pentagon spending? A-OK, pass it or there's a veto coming.

As an outsider I can't really see what the fuss is all bout when it comes to Ron Paul. Especially since he seems to have such a strong following among American students - a demographic he is all set to screw over in the unlikely event he comes to power.
He is against even the most basic public services (education and healthcare) and wants to abolish the Minimum Wage. A candidate like Paul would die on his arse in a European election.
-------------------------------------
The difference between the US and European mentality is that the US government is actively working against the benefit of the people, the people know this, and the folks who support Ron Paul believe that the solution is the reduce the capabilities of the federal government.
It's not that I'm against socialized health care or subsidized education, but I personally feel that those should be handled at a state or local level and not at a federal level. As the world's only superpower for so long now, the government has grown so bloated and inefficient that it is incapable of doing anything effectively.
You know that guy who always asks you for money on the street because he's hungry and needs something to eat? You know when you see somebody give him money, he heads right to the liquor store and buys a 40 of Olde English 800? That's the US federal government.
We give our government money for "defense" and they use it to invade Iraq. We give them money for education, they cut education funding and spy on American citizens' phone calls. Social security? Sorry, have to build a wall to keep out the Mexicans.
Like my mama always said, fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me, you can't get fooled again.

I think it's fair to put the collapse of the Soviet Union around the mid to late 1980s even though it wasn't official until 1991.
I agree that 20 years is not "long" on a historical timeline, but it's enough time to distort the views of all the individuals living in the bubble. The people who made the country a superpower during WWII are all dieing off and the majority of people today are still living off of those prior successes.
With the world becoming smaller every day, there won't ever be another Roman or British Empire, at least not in terms of time. Technological advances allow empires to be created larger and more quickly than before, but they also collapse and fall a lot more quickly as well. I think it's pretty cool that we can see the inner workings of it on a daily basis.

Regardless of ol' Ronnie, ETS has a point. What the hell makes it illegal for a person to trade something for another that they would consider to be equal in value? They weren't forging U.S. currency, so what the hell gives them the right to raid and seize the property?
*********
After a very brief view of the actual "peace" site and the news clip, I think the problem, from the Feds point of view, and their excuse to raid and seize, could be...
A failure of the company to collect sales tax and possibly a failure to pay the same on income collected even though it's supposed to be on an even-trade basis.
In any event it's enough to get a Federal judges signiture on a warrant to search and seize cuase that's all it takes...
1 elected or appointed man's signiture

My guess here is that the owner of this business staged a robbery, took all of the precious metals, and is trying to invoke some kind of riot by claiming the government is out to get him. The other option is that he never had the metals he claimed to have and is using this to get out of honoring the certificates he issued. I mean, if you hand hundreds of thousands of dollars in silver, gold, and platinum bars, would you keep it locked up in a shitty little safe in a strip mall and then just hand it over to the FBI when they asked for it?
--------------------------------
He had a nice racket bilking money out of idiots like ETS.
I don't think he is stupid enough to stage a robbery and blame the feds, but who knows. I wouldn't be suprised if the feds did raid him to see if he actually was backing what he said he could, or because he refused to stop calling them "dollars" as I said above.
As far as not handing it over to the Feds nto a person on here would refuse to hand it over and if you did all you owuld get would be a tasering for your troubles.

On the actual issue, it's a basic right to distrust our government. That's why we protect our right to speak out against the government, our right to own guns, our right not to allow the police to go through our things for no reason, etc. This level of distrust is critical to maintain the illusion of a free state.
In the case of money, individuals cede the right to print money to the government. You can't distrust the federal reserve and take matters into your own hands by printing up cash on your home computer. However, there is nothing that prevents people from buying and selling precious metals or certificates that represent those metals and these kinds of things are available on the open market.
My guess here is that the owner of this business staged a robbery, took all of the precious metals, and is trying to invoke some kind of riot by claiming the government is out to get him. "Just out of curiosity after your spiel on what powers the pres has how do you think he (Ron or Dennis) would force fiscal responsibility?

Again, the president can't force anything. At least if the president is doing a decent job, it provides a good level of checking and balancing against the members of Congress. On the other hand, one decent Congressman (e.g. Ron Paul) can't really provide a significant level of checking or balancing for the president or the rest of Congress. The vast majority of Congress is so spineless that they have essentially given an extremely unpopular president free reign to do whatever he wants without consequence. The idea of them "joining forces" to override a veto is laughable at best.
If the government was such that the president was an intelligent human being and it was Congress that was pushing for preemptive wars and fighting against evolution and birth control, then we would have a much different problem on our hands, but at least the checks and balances would be restored.

Didn't Bush just kick back a budget for too much pork? I think it would require electing 50 Ron Paul senators into office instead of just one president to veto something that will just be kicked back and be voted over him anyway. It is easy to buy a senator with another local spending project.

"I have no problem with many of the things you've mentioned. But I don't know how one can really trust a guy who would let the corporate world run wild and unregulated, and the guy who would love nothing better than to socialize everything (Dennis). Please explain that."
???
Sorry to break the news to you, but the corporate world already is running wild and unregulated. Actually that's not totally true as the federal government in its current form does enough regulation to eliminate any potential competition for the largest and richest corporations.
Also, if you recall the concept of a democratic republic which is supposedly the form of government of the US, "a guy" isn't supposed to be able to do anything, even if he is the president. There is a Congress which theoretically represents the will of the people with the House distributed by population and the Senate distributed by states. These entities are responsible for voting on bills that eventually get sent to the president who can either sign them or veto them.
The problem is that when all of the politicians are owned by large corporations, then nobody in the government is protecting the rights of the individual. The only things that everyone can agree on are things that give the federal government more power. More power means more corruption and the cycle continues.
It's not that either Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich are saviors, but at least they state publicly that they have some kind of plan to try to start to eliminate some of the potential for corruption. The other candidates don't even try to hide it anymore.

Alex Jones, grand daddy of insane maniacs who believes in jet contrails are mind control drugs, "lizard people", 9/11 was an inside job, Tupac and Elvis are sipping martinis on a beach on a south pacific island beach, etc.... loves Ron Paul.
Oh, and you forgot your support for Gravel, too.
I have no problem with many of the things you've mentioned. But I don't know how one can really trust a guy who would let the corporate world run wild and unregulated, and the guy who would love nothing better than to socialize everything (Dennis). Please explain that.

"Oddly enough, neo-nazis love Ron Paul as do anarchists (of course), 9/11 conspiracy lunatics, and every other Alex Jones suckup in the country. This amounts to a rabid and loud fanbase, but not many votes in the polls."
This is a stupid thing to say. There are a lot of people that love Ron Paul, including me.
Abortion clinic bombers and closeted homosexuals love George W. Bush. The New York mafia and FOX News love Giuliani.
I don't agree with everything Ron Paul says, but compared to my vision of what I want the federal government to do, he's pretty close and everyone else is way the hell off target.
Mitt "Double Guantanamo" Romney? Rudy "I didn't care about fighting terrorism until after terrorists blew up the WTC while I was mayor and I realized I could use the whole thing for personal political and financial gain" Giuliani? Hillary "I might nuke Iran" Clinton?
These people are ALL insane. The only ones who have any plan to do something good are Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich. John Edwards and Barack Obama are ok, but they're much too interested in maintaining the status quo and not offending anyone in the corporate media. They get rewarded for their obedience with more air time and newspaper stories.
Nobody other than Ron Paul is talking about basic fiscal responsibility. Without that, the rest of this stuff doesn't really matter because the country will be bankrupt in five years.

Captain Thorns,
Of course Bush has insane policies as well.
My dislike of Ron Paul has more to do with the odd cult that follows him around and attacking anyone who has a different opinion than them, spamming internet polls, crying that he doesn't get coverage along with crying that the coverage he gets is biased, etc. He is beloved by neo-nazi types at stormfront, he is the candidate of choice for anarchists (whom usually do not even care to vote), he is the choice of paranoid anti-government lunatics, he is the choice of 9/11 conspiracy nutters as you can hardly see a Ron Paul supporter that doesn't think 9/11 was an "inside job" and show it proudly via bumpersticker or T-Shirt at most of these gatherings....
I probably agree with Paul at least on 60% of what he does which is probably double Bush. But that's just a personal opinion that mean really absolutely nothing to others.
I wouldn't be upset if Ron Paul became president. But, I think there are going to be a lot of border-line wackos (the kind that throw rocks at police and hole up in places and are armed with guns) that are going to be upset if he doesn't become president.

I do believe Brad is becoming somewhat of a hero.
As for the story, it's a little disappointing that all of the precious metals were under such little protection that some FBI agents could just come in and take everything without a Waco-like showdown. The way the facts were presented in this story, the raid could have been staged by the owner or carried out by common thieves instead of government funded ones.
