You're right. I completely forgot the whole reason behind the 3 round burst setting. It's that, based on percentages of hits resulting in death, it takes 3 rounds placed center mass to bring the chance of the target dying to just over 90%.
So yeah, fuck that. I'll just buy a .308 hunting rifle. Besides, I've been looking for a reason to pick up a Remington 700 Tactical with synthetic stocks and a bipod.

I imagine you could take down a dear with a .223 round. You can take down a 200 lb. human. Why not a <200 lb. deer? I suppose I could just spend another $400 on a .308 hunting rifle and a bit more on a quality scope, but why bother if I don't have to?

Correction, you generally WOUND a human with a .223 round and then they bleed to death shortly afterwards, with no medical attention. Killing them outright, unless you get a perfect shot, isn't the normal outcome. You know that. Even center mass, this happens.
You will fucking RUIN a deer if you wound it, the adrenaline and all of that shit dumped into their bodies as they try and run off and then bleed out will make it tough and taste different.
The larger round will blow the heart and lungs out the exit wound if you get the proper shot, and drop it dead in it's tracks. Chasing them fuckers up a creekbed sucks.

Anybody know anything about hunting in New Hampshire or Maine? I've been thinking about giving it a try. I've never been hunting for anything that doesn't shoot back before. Can you take down a deer with an AR-15?
