I wrote this a while ago, hence the lapsed dates.
I wake up in the morning to loud Reveille music played over the intercom at 4:55 am. I have five minutes to throw my gym clothes on, brush my teeth, piss, and be outside in formation to run over to the gym where I work out until around 6:05. I run back in formation. I then have 10-15 minutes to shower, shave, put on my uniform and be in formation to go to breakfast. We get yelled at because we take to long. I go to breakfast and eat. I come back, I have 5 minutes to make sure I look awesome, no lint, everything shiny, etc. and then form up for Personnel inspection. We get yelled at because we are late. We do that and get yelled at because we look like shit. Then I have 5 more minutes to make sure my room is exactly the way it is supposed to be, all drawers pulled out so many inches, all books perfectly aligned on shelves, desk set up, folders in right space, all hanging items exactly two inches from each other and hung as worn, throw on my jacket, put everything I need for the day into my bookbag, and form up for class. We get yelled at because we are late. March to class. Have class until 11:15. march back to the barracks, drop off coat, unpack bag, put everything in bag back where it is supposed to go, and form up for lunch. We get yelled at because we are late. This takes 3 minutes on average. Go to lunch, come back, put coat on, repack bag, formation, back to class. Again, get yelled at because we are late. Class until whenever, 3-430 pmish. Dinner is at 5. if there is time between class and food we can get haircuts, run to the exchange to buy personal items, etc. form up go to dinner at 5. get yelled at because we are late. come back from dinner, 15 minutes or so to do whatever, then we go into cleanups. That lasts an hour or so, depending on who is in charge that day and how nasty the place is. From there we move into our study hours. Two phases. Phase 1 can do nothing but study. Phase 2 lasts 30 minutes and we can study, use the phone, iron uniforms, polish boots, etc. at 930 pm tattoo starts. That is when we can shower and get ready for bed. We are in bed around 10 depending. Many times we take late lights because there wasn't enough time to finish all the work we had to do. So we go to bed at 11. and then start the whole thing over again in 6 hours.
That is a normal day for the average individual. If you are in a specific company position, like I have been, it is completely different. It is different if you are on duty which happens every 4 days. If you are lucky enough to be the OOD or JOOD for the day, its way worse. You don't sleep at all, for the most part.
And of course, don't forget to factor in the regular beatings that are spread out over the course of the day. They typically are accompanied by being yelled at.
Weekends are a completely different schedule, a little more laid back, especially Sunday. Sunday is kind of the day to catch up. But we still get yelled at.
It is way worse than boot camp.
So on top of all the homework and studying I have to do, I also have about a gagillion memos to write, evaluations to draft, forms to fill out....it sucks. A lot. Oh, and if you get in trouble for something stupid like, leaving your bookbag on top of the desk instead of underneath it, you get marching tours as punishment. First offense is 3 marching tours. A marching tour is you dress up, grab your rifle, go outside, and march back and forth slowly for 30 minutes. That is one tour. Minimum assigned is three. Second offense you get 5, third offense you get 8, etc. so, if you cant remember simple stupid things, you get absolutely no time to take care of anything because you have to march back and forth every waking second of free time. It blows. Oh, and lets not forget getting yelled at because we are late turning in our homework, because not only do we have no time to get it done, we have to take it around and get about 1000 signatures on it before you can turn it in. And then there are demerits. Demerits don't really do anything yet but eventually when we are actually at a point where we can have liberty, if you have more than 8 demerits for the week, you are fucked. To give you an idea, the average individual demerit total this week is 60. we have a ways to go. Then there are company demerits, we are in the hundreds on that and I think anything more than 20 noone gets liberty at all.
Officially in week 6 now. April 18th we "pick" our billets, so we say which one we want knowing full well that it isn't the one we are going to get. April 20th is the halfway point. We have some kind of party and I think we get liberty. April 27th we get underway on the Eagle for 2 weeks. May 13th, the day after we get back we find out where we are going after we get out of here and are greatly disappointed because it isn't what we picked. Another party, sort of.
I have a feeling I am going to end up either in Alaska or in Guam. Neither one seems appealing. And I will get yelled at for not being excited.

I don't know what OCS is. It sounds like some sort of torture-for-profit scheme the government is laying on us. Did you volunteer for this shit? if so, why? It sounds like the only thing missing is an iron maiden and a rack. Oh sorry, you prob didn't hear me SINCE I DIDN'T SCREAM IT LIKE THIS. WHY DOES EVERYONE IN THE ARMY TALK LIKE THIS? DO THEY THINK CIVILIANS ARE DEAF? IS EVERYONE IN THE ARMY HARD OF HEARING? WTF?

CJ: I am not an idoit, thank you. worked 4 years as a snipe, now an ENS in a job field i have no idea about; no experience in, except for what i have learned in the last 4 months or so. I made a couple of O's look really good when i was enlisted and they got the credit for it, so i knew how the system worked. and yes, the E's definitely determine whether or not i am a good officer.

Oh, right. 'Cause that's SO much better...
(snicker)
Oh yeah, and I read your last post. You seem quite the picture-perfect, stereotypical new lieutenant. Remember that your NCOs (or Petty Officers, I guess) will either make you or break you, depending on how you lead them.
And try not to fall into the classic trap most Mustang Officers do by thinking that you know your subordinates' jobs because 'you've been there'. You don't, really, anymore and you'll just fuck everything up if you try to do both their and your job. Leave 'em alone and try to keep the classic Officer Arrogance to a minimum.

Sounds about right.
Suck it up, drive on and try not to think too hard about the fact that the Department of Transportation signs your paychecks(rather than, you know, DOD).
