Pat Robertson, the elite cult leader, has made another outrageous claim. He tells us that, in 2008, "evangelism will increase and more people will seek God as the chaos develops." Robertson said, "We will see the presence of angels and we will see an intensification of miracles around the world."
Why do people still listen to this man? Has he not shamed himself enough yet?
Have people forgotten that he also claimed he could cure AIDS through prayer in the 1970s and 80s?
He called Protestants "anti-Christs".
He said his prayers could stop hurricanes (Gloria 1985, Felix 1995). He was wrong on both accounts.
He supported Charles Taylor, Liberia's President, during his war crimes.
Let's not forget that he said America should assassinate Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela becuase the country apparently holds too much oil.
He said God told him there would be "mass killings" in America from terrorists attacks in 2007. None occurred.
He said America would be hit with a tsunami in 2006, by God's word. Never occurred.
In short, this guy is not only certifiabley insane, but a religious leader to boot. I know that many people need faith to get through life, and I'm cool with that. At what point, however, do they look at their religious leaders and think "Maybe this guy doesn't have the answers"?
If the weather man is wrong once or twice, people get all worked up. This assclown was taking his followers' God and using it as a political and finacial tool for his own gain. Now, I'm not not a religious person, but doesn't the Bible say soemthing about not being allowed to do that?
I mean, this guy runs the Christian Broadcast network (180 countries, 71 languages). He has his very own tax free soap box from which he spouts this rhetoric to literally millions of followers.
Again, I will not claim to be a historian, but hasn't this kind of exposure and following always lead to trouble in the past? Hell, Jonestown was just a smaller scale CBN and they killed a congressman, some reporters, and over nine hundred of themselves.
He even started the Christian Coalition (1.7 million members). In 1993, while it was being formed, Robertson stated:
"Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history."
He actually said that the Christians have suffered more abuse than any minority in history.
Nearby, right now, there is a homeless man that claims to speak to God. He's always yelling about "repent this" or "rapture that", making claims of our evil and God's wrath. Yet, everybody that passes him - Christians included - see the man as a lunatic. What's the difference of one man saying it on television and another on a street corner? How is one any more valid than the other?
Earl, that's what I'll call the homeless guy because I don't know his name, say much of the same crap that Robertson does. I'll list a few selections and you decide who said what.
1: "I think we ought to close Halloween down. Do you want your children to dress up as witches? The Druids used to dress up like this when they were doing human sacrifice. Your children are acting out Satanic rituals and participating in it, and don't even realize it."
2. "Many of those people involved with Adolph Hitler were Satanists, many of them were homosexuals. The two things seem to go together."
3. "How can there be peace when drunkards, drug dealers, communists, atheists, New Age worshipers of Satan, secular humanists, oppressive dictators, greedy money changers, revolutionary assassins, adulterers, and homosexuals are on top?"
4. "I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period."
5. "Yesterday, I spoke to God. He told me that you are all destined for the fiery pits of Hell if you don't change your ways! You will burn in the hellfire for eternity. BURN! BURN!...you gotta quarter?"
If you guessed 1-4 as Earl, you'd be wrong. That was Robertson preaching Jesus' gospel of "love thy neighbor" and "let thee without sin" and such. The last was Earl. I could be wrong though, the Christian Coalition is essentially bankrupt from shady dealing by Robertson himself. Also, most of the time I think Earl is saying "Hrgghhl...mumble mumble...damned Jews...made me crap my pants...wait, where the Hell are my pants...YOU STEAL MY PANTS!?!" Then he chased me for a block with a rolled up newspaper he was using to keep his crotch warm.
Anyway, I'm just saying this man is a raving lunatic (Pat, not Earl - I trust Earl more) and those that would follow him are dangers not only to themselves but society at large.

"I know that many people need faith to get through life, and I'm cool with that."
I used to be religiously tolerant because growing up as a UU that's what they told me to be. Then I realized that I hate the irrationality behind all religion and that I am in fact an antitheist. I don't want to argue about it or anything though, because although I can't disprove god, I know I'm right. I've been told that this too is faith, but no.
On a related note, I broke a two inch board with my crane fist shaolin style and cut the shit out of my hand last night.

I'm just doing a renovation before I plan on moving back to VA in a few months, but the house has the same kitchen it did in the 50's. Seriously, the oven is mint 50's condition deal. I've heard formica. I was planning on using the same wood, oak, just sanding, re-finishing, and adding different hardware. I'm not going to drop a boat load into a house that I'm leaving.

what are you looking for in a countertop...something that looks nice and is functional in a place that I am willing to make a minor investment in but am not looking to stay in forever or would you like essentially a lifetime countertop?
as far as the cabinets...it depends on many factors such as are you going to do it yourself, what kind of wood are you looking at for new cabinets, are you going for functionality or look or both...etc.
Context as Rob mentioned to you earlier. I can tell you anything you want to know about cabinetry and countertops if you tell me what you are looking for.

ok better yet remove my example of it is pretty and simplify it to 'it is a flower'
did you still make a decision?
---
Sure. I made many decisions. Recognition, I am sure there was some association with the smell of a flower, the feel of it or the emotion that giving a bundle of them to a sweetheart might have felt.
At the end of the day, everything I learned about that flower up to that point in my life influenced my reaction and subsequent decisions.

Perhaps, but the real question is what is the most economical way to redo the kitchen. Would I be better off sanding and re-staining the exterior myself and just adding a new counter top? What is the most economical and "good looking" counter top around?
Also, I have a poor back this week and I think it's because I slept everywhere but my bed for the past week.

However, the chaotic nature of the human existence limits the conversation due to individual context (experiential) and relativism (situational).

I think we'd have to go back and forth a bit on what constitutes action or decision making and I still have to finish this cabinet estimate today before my 86 mile trek home.
what you are saying and what I'm not decided on yet is that we are in control of our initial thought, that we influence it in some manner, is in direct conflict with the teachings of programs such as AA where people are taught that they exist at the will of their poison.

I would argue that instinct only influences your decision making... but that we shape our instinct. Hone it.
Also, when you decide that something is pretty that IS free will. You still made that choice - it might only be the result of a couple fired up neurons - but your individual experiences up to that point in your life have all influenced how you choose to react. You may not fully know why you make such choices, but they are being made and with enough clarity and relevant experience - mostly controlled.
Some people are just better at 'dealing with shit' than others.

hmmm... Good Question mudflap,
I believe that 'Free Will' exists in all of us.
However, we also have the capacity for learning. For reason. We each individually absorb our own unique experiences and from them we are able to form questions and puzzle out answers.
Some people are happy to be told the answers, some people insist on cheating. Others prefer to always question it - with no real satisfaction coming from any answers.
Now, while our thoughts are all learned - I also think they are influenced by our collective unconscious. That intangible connection that we have with all humanity. Call it 'the force', if you will - but I truly believe that all life is connected.
It explains the concept of a 'conscience'. Our internal moral barometer that guides our notion of 'right' and 'wrong'.
I believe that to be innate.
======
Free will implies some sort of action though doesn't it? I"m talking about before the action.
Let's say that when you look at a flower and your mind tells you that you think it is pretty. You didn't make a decision or take action to think it is pretty it was purely instinctual in your mind. You mind might have immediately said 'that flower is the color of the blood you must spill tonight' and again you did nothing to create that thought.
Saying all thoughts are learned is not quite right when you bring into account 'instinct'
Now the real mindfuck is can those initial thoughts be affected or trained (ala A CLockwork Orange) or are they...in fact...purely instinctual?

there are obviously exceptions to the rule. some people choose to believe in whatever god because it comforts them. some morons are religious because they are satisfied with not understanding anything and being religious gives them an excuse for said satisfaction.
other people are religious because they see miracles like their child being born and think there must be a god because how else could something so beautiful happen.
i was merely speaking of the morons who use religion as an excuse to kill, hate, abuse, harass, exploit, rape, torture, and all the other bullshit. also, the people who refuse to believe in the theory of evolution, and the people who are satisfied with not understanding why things are the way they are. religion is a cop-out (not for everyone, though).

If I am on a train travelling at 150 mph, essentially I am travelling the same speed. If I start at the back and run to the front, did I run faster than 150 mph? DO the other people on the train see me as running over 150 mph or do the people observing from off of the train see me as running more than 150 mph.
Also, if I pop out my eyes and point them towards each other, do I see one giant eyeball or is it the multiple mirror effect where they will go on forever?
Aaaaaand GO!
======
No. You did not run faster than 150mph. You were running on the train which was moving at 150mph. Your reference point is the train. In relation to the train, you are running as fast as any average man/woman can run.
Other people on the train would see you as running however fast you can run because they have the same reference point as you. Its like how the Earth is spinning at 1,000mph. We aren't moving 1000mph + our speed. We are simply moving at our own speed because the Earth is our reference point and everything on Earth is moving at 1000mph.
People observing you from off the train would see you moving at 150mph + whatever speed you're running, like the moving walkway conveyor dealys in airports. If you run on those, you feel like you're moving incredibly fast because you can see a non-moving reference point with clarity close to you and other people see you as running whatever speed you're running + the speed of the conveyor dealy.
I dont know about the eye thing. That's interesting.

I have never understood Pat Robertson's view of the world. He advocates a return to traditional Christian values from 100 years ago or so, without any consideration of the way the world is different. Families cannot function now the way they did then. We don't toil on farms and darn socks and stay married forever and believe everything we're told by our elders any more.
This is America and so he can hate anyone he wants to, but PR doesn't see that trying to place blame for what he sees as the problems with the way things are on commies and fags and Democrats and commie fag Democrats doesn't change the way things are or solve any problem in any way. He's an old pathetic self-deluding fool and if you ignore him, he'll go away.

On 2nd thought. It ALL depends on which direction the train is moving. If it's traveling in reverse at 150 mph the answers change as now you will be traveling 150mph - the speed at which you are running, according to 3rd party spectators outside of the train.

religion is how stupid people explain things they cant explain or understand.
---
That really isn't true - and is quite limited in it's explanation.
Religion is for the weak and the needy. It doesn't make it wrong, per se - only easy to manipulate and a haven for stupid people to associate with equally stupid people.
Doesn't mean the fundamental concepts that construct the core beliefs of religion are bad... some of them are quite beautiful and make complete sense if embraced honestly.

or maybe i'm just being nice so i have someone to converse with
see I used to be able to put long thoughts together in fairly entertaining ways and post them and now my focus flits about so I can only do bits and pieces, intense ones now and then, but bits none the less so I have to stick to commenting instead of posting

While this guy is a certifiable lunatic and much of what you say holds true or at least sparks creative thought, is it any worse than the Vatican City and the outrageous claims from the extremist Catholics? Seriously, it's all shit and the fact that you are actually feeding into it leads me to believe you'll be the first uberer to go on a spiritual absence from this site. Too late? Fuck!
