The "war on terror" is nothing other than yet another gory imperialist spasm. Every great power in recent memory went through its own period of colonial delusions of grandure; every single one of those great empires then faded, leaving behind only a legacy of poverty, misery, and bloodshed all over the world. We are faithfully following in the footsteps of Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal -- trying to "civilize" the world by brute force -- and like them, we shall only reap death and grief from our imperial hubris. How ironic and sad that we, of all nations, having prided in extricating ourselves from the clutches of King George through a great struggle of insurrection and "terrorism", are now led by our very own version of King George to impose our own dictates upon the rest of the world...
Another truly shocking aspect, is how our High Priests of Capitalism -- while espousing the virtues of selfishness and greed, and the superiority of an entirely hypothetical social order (that in fact, has yet to ever have existed) built on them -- are simultaneously claiming to be Christian, and nobody is calling them on it. I'm not even a Christian, but if I were I'd be gravely and personally insulted by such blasphemy. That they invoke the name of Jesus, while engaging in belligerence and character assassination, and escalating aggression, honoring, nurturing, and nearly worshipping the military/industrial machine -- a system whose raison d'etre, in the final analysis, is efficient mass murder -- to the tune of $500,000,000,000+ per year.... we live in an absurd, surreal, twisted world
When our population is so easily misled and propagandized, so ignorant and delusional, it must mean that our democracy is failing. Because the success of any democracy vitally depends on the degree to which the electorate is informed and engaged. Yet, what we witness all around us -- and even on this thread -- is evidence that vast numbers of people are nothing more than clueless political sock puppets, incapable of independent thought and analysis, merely parroting "facts" and unexamined ideas that someone else had planted in their heads.... Partisan gamesmanship, petty preoccupation with myopic and egocentric conceptions of absolute "morality", crude jingoism that poses as faux patriotism, pathological obsession with and fear of all matters sexual, proud rejection of rationality and impartiality, gleeful denigration of science, supreme arrogance toward the rest of the world, irrational cowardice, lazy blindness to context and nuance, abject surrender of personal constitutional prerogative to the economic power elites -- these are now the attributes of America, the new American Way.
I've moved all my investments out of this ever more rotten version of the Holy Roman Empire; and if it keeps degenerating like this, which it will do more likely than not, I'll soon move myself. It is too painful to watch what could have been so great, laid so low.
