If I'm looking for a mid to small sized car around or under $4000, without too many miles on it, what would you recommend? I'd like something reliable and good on gas.
My cavalier has seen the end of days and must retire soon.
Ideas? Recommendations?
Here's one I've been thinking about:

Look for a 5 year old Cavalier, Focus, ZX2, or a Neon. They're not as reliable as a Toyota, Honda, or a VW, but after a car reaches a certain age, they all start getting nickel-and-dime type problems. The parts/repair bills for American cars are considerably lower.
Check out craigslist for your town under cars & trucks. There's usually a pretty good selection of beaters there since the ads are free.

Call all of the places nearby that rent older cars for cheap. Rent-A-Wreck is one of them; there are more. Find a Cavalier of approximately the same vintage as yours. Take a cab to the place and rent it. Drive it to your home, where you and several friends (at least one of whom has some vehicle knowledge and tools) will strip it of all the parts required for your Cavalier and swap them with the bad ones from your car. Need new tires? Take them too. Return the rental with the worn out parts, indicating that is seems like it may need maintenance. An investment of less that $1K including all the fried chicken, pizza and beer, and your car is refreshed for another year or two.
Eat the chicken before you work on the car, and rub the grease into the skin on your hands and arms. It keeps the car grease from sticking so cleanup is easy. Truth.

Malibu's last a while before they kick the bucket. If you're looking for something with awesome mileage on it, see if you can find a used Jetta. They're worth it.

Just get Shlongy to buy you a car. He'd be a great sugar daddy. He wants to do you, too, which helps.

Vehix.com has some higher mileage but reliable cars in your area in the 6K range- I saw a Sentra and a Camry, but the links are too long to paste. You may be able to find something cheaper there.

I think you should look into a late model "Schwinn".
Or, take taxis until the 4k runs out.

A private sale is probably the way to go, then. A few years ago, my friend bought a used Honda Accord for around 5K, when at the time the same car off a used lot would have probably gone for twice that. I'd think prices may be lower where you are, since I'm in a metro area. I've been browsing myself using CarSense, Enterprise, etc (no retail dealers or private sales yet), and so far, it's hard to find automatic, 4-door Hondas/Nissans/Toyotas with lower mileage for less than 3 times what you're spending. I haven't done all my homework, but its what I've seen so far. Maybe a Dodge Neon? They aren't optimal, but even new they're pretty cheap and sometimes they seem to last a while.

And just for kicks, AMC gremlin. I had one. You couldn't kill it, no matter what you did to it. Had vinyl honeycomb seats so that if you laid down to sleep in the back and woke up, it looked like someone put the waffle iron on your face.

You don't need an expert when you're looking for ideas about something most people on uber know about, shitstirrer.
Not sure what the going rate for used cars in your area is. Up here, unless its a private sale, you're looking more in the 8K-14K range for the make/models you've mentioned before.
