Yes, dear Uberites, it is once again time to face your fear of rabid squirrels, showing off that pallid white belly, and mixing with internet strangers on a trip to Uber Camp 2008.
This year we will be heading to lovely Waterloo State Recreation Area, home to over 20K acres of woods and lakes making it the largest State Recreation Area in our Lower Peninsula. At just 15 minutes from Ann Arbor, both the quiet of the woods and the all the fun of a 24hr university city can be yours for the taking.
Waterloo itself has several beaches (one only accessible to those staying at the campground), 47 miles of hiking trails, 11 fishing lakes, boat rental and the sort of random outdoor activities one would expect in a typical state park.
Ann Arbor, home to (heh, what else) the University of Michigan, features multiple museums, downtown restaurants, many MANY bars, taverns and self contained breweries, and the nightlife clubs for those with tree phobias and bonfire allergies.
Camping dates are Friday, June 27 through the 29th
Modern Campground with electricity, water, and full showering and toilet capabilities.
No raccoons staring up at you with demonic red eyes as you squat here.
We hope to be able to provide: basic camping gear for those who have none but are interested in attending, perishable food items for those traveling from other states that will be available at a group rate as per the last camp, the organization of carpooling from other areas, and
BRING YOUR OWN DAMN ALCOHOL OF CHOICE, YOU LUSHES.
Come, join us around the campfire and slow clap your way to what is sure to be a very interesting weekend getting to know your favorite internet stalkers.

Anyone who brings coke around me will be spend a great deal of time looking for their teeth in the street. I don't hold with the white powder and I don't put up with the bullshit that comes with it being used. Moot point anyway seeing as camping is not going to happen.

Seriously, I'd love to do something like that, but the funding is the problem. The place I work for is closing, and my last day will likely be Feb 1 or Feb 8. Whatever cash I get for severance plus unemployment will have to be conserved. Who knows how long it will be?
What I do in electronics is mostly being sent overseas, plus I'm 58 years old. Shutup. Bottom line: The prospects for future employment in my area are pretty shitty. Moving is my LAST option, as I have four kids and eight grandkids here where I live. ''

I lived outside (euphemism for "was homeless") for about a year during grad school. You'd be surprised to learn how many woman don't want to sleep with homeless guys.
I'd go if I were single. I have a nephew in Michigan. I'd bring him, and I would spend the entire trip trying to get Ebola to drink again. Just because I like him.

I know a guy that is a lurker at uber (registered name, never posted and makes few comments) that may be interested in that offer.
He has to check with his parole officer to see if this kind of situation is allowed before doing something like this. He has to make sure he has enough meds, his sex offender registry is updated, and that he goes to his anger management counselor before he gets on the plane.
I will warn you, that for some reason plane trips mess him up a bit. But he should calm down by the time the ride to your place is over.

Camping is much more fun if you're not trying to be Rambo and live off the land.
I used to live near a campground. We'd have a nice fire, dinner, drink ourselves to sleep - then go back to my apartment and shower up, get clean clothes, and go back and do it again the next night.
Much more civilized that way I think.

Of course that's not camping, lung. True camping is having to hike 5 miles to your site, carry all the things you'll use in a week on your back, and taking a shit with all of nature's creatures laughing at you as you try to balance behind the tree, but that sort of thing tends to scare the hell out of your typical American.
I'd love it if I could pull together a snow camp but you're talkin hard core backpackers and hunters.

Scourge- I have to take the girls to my parents in Chicago just to get time off. This year I'm required to preform 3 days of miracles on their landscaping just to GET that weekend kid free. And as far as control goes why the hell do you think I'M hosting it? People will behave in their durnkeness ( see uber camp rules) or they'll have to deal with me. Ask the husband how much fun THAT is. I don't plan on going to jail for other people's stupidity. Plant the kids, bring the wife. It'd be nice to add another married/well settled couple to the mix.
Corny- Trust me you'll get over that "I'm his mom I have to be there every second he takes a breath" thing. Won't be soon, considering the circumstances, but it'll happen. Scourge, this would be the first ubercon I attend since I had the baby. Since I live in the area I'd probably just have my mom babysit him overnight one night.
