These, in summary, are the tenets of humanism. Promises of salvation are "illusory and harmful," ethics is "situational," and sexual activity between "consenting adults" is acceptable no matter who or what is involved. Sounds like "vice is nice" propaganda, doesn't it? Abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, and even what some call the "last taboo"incestare acceptable according to humanism. As one author put it: "While humanity did not arise from the beasts, Humanism certainly stoops to their level" (Jones, 1981, 98[20]:309).
Is that it? Is that the best you can do? Find three things to rage against in the humanist manifesto II? The only real problems I can see with the manifesto and the humanist movement at large is that it presumes all human beings to be good people, willing to do what they can to advance their species. Humanism seems to forget that mankind is nasty, brutish, and inherently exhibits a very dark and evil side. Yet, these religious authors, usually of the christian variety, seem content to attack the humanist manifesto by focusing soley on the supposed attacks on the faithful and their families i.e; sexual deviance, abortion, assisted suicide, and the biggest rabble rouser of them all, denial of the basic tenets of christianity itself : salvation of the eternal soul.
What's the point of this? What's the point of rousing an entire slice of the american population against a set of ethics because of it's denial of religion and the attempt to embrace all forms of sexuality? What is it about these subjects that sends these people into such a tizzy?
Homosexuality was outlawed by the judeo-christian God because it prevented procreation, incest was outlawed because while procreation could still be done, the resulting mixture of the genetic code would undoubtedly be a damaged copy and result either in the end of a certain genetic line, or the propagation of congenital diseases and/or disabilities.
Abortion was outlawed because at the time, the Israelites needed all the children they could get their hands on, infant mortality was high, and needlessly destroying a developing human being would lead to a decrease in the population of workers/soldiers and the nation's ability to feed and defend itself would be hindered, however slightly.
Here is what I'm taking away from the Huamnist Mainfesto : "Why can't we all get along? Why can't we use our inherent intelligence to solve the world's problems?" Of course there a few things I disagree with; namely the naive belief that humanity could come together as one species, live peacefully and freely under a one world government, and embrace pacifism. Unfortunately, as I stated earlier, humanity is a flawed, warlike, species whose notion of pacifism is profiting off both sides of a conflict.
Fuck you switzerland.
In reality, if mankind were ever to be united under a single government, the heads of such a government would soon turn to totalitarianism (if such a thing had not already happenend), and attempt to enslave mankind for generations until a "glorious revolution" happened, and everything returned to the nation-state system under which we currently live. Mankind is not a creature that can be forced to live amiacably with one another without some sort of threat of violence hovering over their heads. Pacifism is a notion that, while honorable, is not attainable. At least not amongst the currently unelightened species that calls itself "civilized". The world prescribed by the Humanists is impossible with human beings at the helm, but the tenets of the movement at least need to be considered by all of humanity, not just be ignored because some phrases come into conflict with the moral values of a single religious sect.

Tolerance is a crime when applied to evil.
I think Thomas Mann said that...
That is why Humanism blows.

wouldn't faults show more in crowds?
as an individual a person can either be reasoned with or taught logic but as a group logic and reason fall to the wayside in light of fervor and emotion

My main issue with humanism is, as you mentioned, pacifism cannot be forced. What seems to be overlooked is, the pacifism is supposed to be voluntary, rather than doing so under leadership.
Humans as a whole are good, but when individualised, the faults show through, and reflect poorly on the species. A prime example of faults is situational problems, caused out of a percieved necessity, but without any way of meeting these needs through acceptable channels. Situational problems occur in society if for no other reason than to show others what not to do. There will always be a deviant.
It's not Switzerland you have to be worried about, it's Sweeden.

hmm...you're right. I think i forgot my original intention for the piece. I had hoped to tie it all up with the last paragraph, now that I look back on it, it did wander around a bit, eh?
ahh well, live and learn, thanks for the constructive bullshit and stuff. I'll keep it mind.

I forgot situational ethics....
okay.
There is always going to be an exception to a rule, but moral absolutes based upon the three basic rights written in the American Declaration of Independence i.e; Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (or if one wants to original, life, liberty, and property) should be kept.
that is all
yay me!
