A few weeks ago I caught an episode of Detroit SWAT. I have never really watched a full episode of these types of shows, but one thing that has always struck me is the cost and bullshit involved in an operation that rarely succeeds...
I have watched episodes where the swat team gets briefed days in advance, over a dozen officers view maps (hand drawn on a freaking whiteboard.. hello google earth anyone?) talk over the operation, spend hours in a weapon room etc. Then a dozen cops and 2 vehicles will raid a suspected dealers house only to find no dealer and no drugs... Of course windows are smashed and doors broken down during the process. I usually shake my head that they bothered to air something that had no arrests or any action.
The last time I watched an episode I was dumbfounded... I'll break down the checklist:
24 SWAT team members,
APC armoured vehicle (tank like thing with tiny holes to shoot or look out of)
a dozen local police officers
SWAT bus with dozens of rifles, shotguns and handguns
6 local police patrol cars
4 other SWAT transport vehicles.
The cost?
Where to begin, factor in weapons, ammunition normal wage plus overtime and collateral damage from neighbouring houses
I have no clue how to calculate it, perhaps someone can help in the reviews.
The scenario:
male wanted for assault with a deadly weapon
holed up in house in suburban area
the siege took place over 14 hours
The SWAT team fired countless rounds into the house from about 6 locations, including driving the APC onto the front lawn
smashed every window and door in the house
They fired over 36 gas cannisters that spew out some toxic shit - so toxic that half the SWAT uniforms had to be destroyed afterwards.
Slight overkill perhaps?
WTF people, come on - Assault with a deadly weapon? the guy hadn't been in prison before. His record wasn't mentioned but lets say he was a bad guy who had repeatedley evaded capture, does this warrant such excessive cost and force.
If your house was surrounded by a SWAT team and they started firing tear gas and other toxic substances into your house would you come out with your hands up and expect not to get shot at least 14 times in the fucking face within a second of you opening your front door?
The suspect killed himself about 2 hours (they suspect) into the siege but the SWAT guys were too fucking scared to actually enter the house. They stormed it after the 14 hour mark and found his body.
What an absolute fuck up and waste of time and money, there must have been more pressing issues in Detroit to resolve that day surely, like chasing white rappers with paintball guns up and down 8 mile or perhaps sniping canadians from across the border.

Your ignorance is showing. Minors cannot be sentenced to death. Life terms, yes, but that policy was put in place in the early 90's when the US had an explosion crime by children, some as young as 10, for murder, not accidental death, straight up MURDER. As far as the mentally handicapped going down, spew your shit at Texas or Florida, Michigan doesn't HAVE a death penalty and hasn't for a 100 years give or take a decade. Guns are not drawn at routine traffic stops. Never have. And as far as the testosterone filled, jumped up, police state, donut eating officer goes, DEATH is a very REAL possibility when you're on the job in this city. The simplest of domestic dispute calls can turn into a firestorm. These men and women, and I mean the ones in the trenches not the coffee sucking higher ups, deal with dead kids, beaten women, and random shootings and stabbings on a daily basis.
I don't know where you're from Locks, I really don't care. Obviously somewhere that the crime rate is so low you have your newspaper reporting every little home invasion like its the crime of the century. I spent my formative years hanging out in Detroit. I've seen the violence, the guns, the drugs. I've seen the baser part of humankind come out and wreak horrific damage seen nowhere but in the local news here and Hollywood. The SWAT team may have over done it in the instance you saw but did you see the episode of The First 48 from a&e where they followed a detroit detective to a crime scene where they found a single bloody teenage survivor of a domestic dispute who had her extended family beaten to death with a lead pipe? No, it was decided that it was far too bloody an event to show on cable television. How about the man who walked into a home daycare facility shot both the woman that ran it and her niece who was holding her infant just so he could go in a back room and beat his 3 yr old daughter to death with the butt of his gun so he didn't have to pay child support to her mother. How about 4th of July shootings a few years back? Some asshole randomly fired into a huge crowd killing and wounding innocents and then disappeared back into the crowd of frightened people/sheep never to be seen again?
Know this, I support the soldiers in a war, not the policy makers who's words mean shit.

Did they over do it here, yes.
If there was no SWAT teams would drug gangs not have auto or semiautomatic weapons, bullet proof vests, control of neighborhoods so they know whenever swat is coming etc-Yes.
Unfortunately there is a place fo them in cesspools like detroit.

I doubt it was that they were too scared to go in untill after 14 hours, they probably knew he was at least immobolized, at best had life threatening injuries and wanted to let those injuries run their course so they wouldn't have to save them.
If you want to get into the overzealous stuff, use the Insane man who got killed for moving around his rake, not the preperation they put into going after guys who would kill them if they saw the opening. The problem in Detroit is the government there, not the police force. It's actually kind of like robocop 3 in that way.

A place where cops pulling over a simple traffic violation get shot at the driver side window before they have a chance to speak. I remember playing SWAT 2, you always blanketed the area in teargas. You only got a -3 for firing ten teargas rounds into an outhouse with a baddie in it, but you got a -5 if you blasted him in the teeth with a sniper and he wasn't 'gun up'.
The only problem was you couldn't get gas masks for K-9 units which was very inconveniant.

Its probably a budget thing where if they don't spend their whole budget then in the next financial year that will get allocated less money.
