I have to work a "Rockabilly" show tonight. It's one of those genres of music I really know very little about. The very concept baffles me. A hybrid of punk & country? What sick bastard thought that up during a coke bender? I dig most punk music, but I despise country in a manner reminiscent of IndoNinja's hate of basic human rights. Seriously though, I'm kinda curious on the origins of this nonsense. Anybody seen Shlongy? He's old and likes this type of shit.
Tomorrow's show promises to be pretty weird. Three acts, all drastically different. First is an acoustic folk solo guy. Not acoustic folk like that trite Jack Johnson: dude covers stuff from Tom Waits to Jeff Buckley. Oh, and who the hell is Jason Miraz? (sp?) I guess his little sister wants him to learn a song by that guy, but none of us have ever heard of the fucker.
The 2nd act is this modern prog-metal group. Imagine Deftones covering Dream Theater and you've kinda got it. Someone tried to tell me that both Tool and Coheed & Cambria are "Prog" the other day. I had a real hard time wrapping my head around that statement. Somebody find that asshole DeathMetalDude: he claims to be the greatest expert alive on the matter.
Final act is some indie garage-rock group. I'm not sure what that means, but I hope they don't sound like The Strokes. I really hate The Strokes. Remember when all those The "THE" bands came out a few years back? Are any of them still around? The Vines, The Hives, The shoot-myself-in-the-face.
I dunno...
Since it seems that no one can post here anymore without a camwhore, I'll play along. This was from New Years' and although, yes, I have been banging Drogo's mum that's not her. No, of course I had to find a photo of myself where I looked the most slender and also had a hot chick in it, right? Right.

The Rockabilly show ended up being quite good!!! I really enjoyed it.

I always saw Coheed and Cambria as being a pussified version of The Mars Volta, like they weren't man(?) enough to go REAL obscure, but it could just be that the lead singers of both bands have no balls and HUGE hair.
I don't think much of the idea of "rockabilly", but it must be popular.
Incidentally, what genre would Maynard's "Cuntry Boner" fall into? That topped the dance singles charts for weeks...

there was a really really badass rockabilly band that played one night at the Double Door here in Chicago but i can't remember their name. god, they were good. some hot blonde who is friends with the band gave me her number. i should call her and find out who they were to see if they are playing again soon.

Deftones are one of my all time favorites. mostly because of Chino. i dig his style. check out his new project Team Sleep.
i actually like Rockabilly. if they band knows what they are doing that is. there was a good scene in San Antonio. used to love going to Sam's Burger Joint.
and no, Coheed and Cambria cannot be classified in the same way as Tool in the least bit. Tool is legendary. Coheed is just a fat guy with a high voice who i thought was a girl the first few times i listened to them.

From what I understand, Rockabilly showed up in it's earliest forms in the 50's. I got into a debate with someone (against my will-arguing about music is stupid) because I said I've always considered Jerry Lee Lewis to be one of the grandfathers of Rockabilly.
Supposedly, it is a fusion of "Hillbilly" (i.e. Country/Folk-Country) and Rock and Roll.
It has evolved up to now. Check out The Reverend Horton Heat. I like him and his band a lot. Lots of fun.
It also has sub genres such as Psychobilly, Gothabilly (yes, I'm serious), etc. I personally like Psychobilly and Gothabilly as it has a little harder edge but doesn't lose the fun component.
Modern day Hot Rodders and Greasers like these *-abilly genres.
Actually, the person to ask would be DeathMetalDude. That motherfucker knows everything there is to know about music.
