i have windows movie maker or whatever it's called, and it looks like it MIGHT be quite easy to use, but i've found it confusing and annoying.
all i want to do is cut little bit of film and paste them into patterns of my choice, ideally with some methods of transition from one scene to the next if necessary.
is this easy in moviemaker? if so, is there any online resource/tutorial/book etc that someone can recommend?
alternatively, is there other cheap/free software avaialble that is easier to use than moviemaker and would allow me to happily play around with scenes in this cut and paste way?
HELP ME!
it's 5.30am on sunday morning here and the future of our wonderful new political party, and therefore the future of EVERYTHING, depends on this!

ok, fine, i don't "loathe" macs themselves. i loathe the people who say they are the greatest thing in the world.
i can't get shit done of a fucking mac. they are worthless unless you want to surf the web and check your email.

Err, what else do you use a computer for?

Interesting. I'd like to see the examples your using. Do you think VC1 outperforms h264 on fast movement? On scaled video and what is it like at producing artefacts?

depending on the bitrate, i think the quality is better. the human eye isn't going to be able to tell in some cases, especially at really high bitrates. a video encoded with both codecs side-by-side will both look beautiful, but you will notice a difference in processor usage (unless you are off-loading the video, or course).
at lower bitrates, my human eyes can tell a difference between the two codecs. VC-1 is slightly better if you know how to configure the stream properly.

in what way exactly?
Are you saying the quality is high at the bit rate?
Are you saying it's quick to encode?
Are you saying it has lower hardware requirements than H264?
At a high enough bit rate, anything looks superb pretty much. And without having to be locked in to yet another microsoft format.

i know exactly what H.264 is, trust me. it's part of my job to know.
i'm currently encoding some raw video at 1080p as i type this using VC-1 and it's kicking ass!

quicktime isn't a format though Hidden. It's a container.
H264 mpeg4 is an excellent format which scales well and is tightly compressed. Plus it's open format.

Quicktime is inferior to Microsoft's VC-1 codec, hands down, end of discussion.

well - i'd say quicktime is a big part in it. Most codecs are included straight away. And for simple editing, nothing beats iMovie - and I'm talking as someone who uses FCP on a regular basis.

seriously, how exactly is it possible for macs to be better than PCs when they run the exact same software? shit like photoshop is the same whether it's on a PC or a mac. it's just flashier on a mac. i don't need flash, i need function. flashy animations are a waste of processor that i need to accomplish tasks.

uuuh.. Use Adobe Audition 3.0. I torrented it. I don't use any of the movie editing, but I use it frequently to mix and remaster. I'm sure you can cut and paste justabout any movie file. If your format is ished, try using a video converter. A.A.3.0 is like 140 megs, not too bad. Just get a cracked version. Fuck any of the microsoft shit.

By Christ, I must agree with Apollo.
I just spent the day driving canyon roads and later, shooting a nice sunset, and tomorrow I'm gonna edit a shit ton of it down to a video letter for my folks. It is very easy on a Mac, even for a computer dipshit like me... now if I can just remember the format to save the stuff ion when converting to a quicktime movie... Everything else is easy, importing, simple sfx, etc.

hidden old egg, I find it surprising you can 'loathe' a PC platform.
imagine being arsed that much.
i've been very pleased with my new mac experience.

OK...here's how you do it.
Grab your dick with even more ferocity than you usually do and twist it until you piss blood.
Then, throw your computer off the roof od your falt.
I think that should take care of it.

that was called sarcasm, fathead. i loathe macs with a passion.
i would really like to know who created the stigma that macs are the best for video and image editing, considering the EXACT SAME EDITING PROGRAMS exist for Windows as well. PC has the ultimate advantage if you ask me- there are two mouse buttons. macs only have ONE!

Use the transitions in the tools menu- you'll need to put it in the small box between the two pieces of film you want to mix.

Ahh it's easy.
drag the clip you want to edit into the big box. When you get to the place you want to cut click the first icon that looks like a razor, it will split it into 2 pices. Delete the bit you don't want, and drag your clips around to change the order.

I used to use Pinnacle studio when I used to teach kids to edit digital video. It's pretty easy to use. people will tell you to use Adobe Premier but I think it's a bit complicated for a beginner.
The file for any will be enormous though as they are huge pieces of software. I'll have a look at Windows movie maker and see if I can work it out.

yes, it seems to suggest that is what you can do, but the actual controls to do that seem very fiddly and unwilling to cooperate.

Far as I know, you can load the clip you want to take a bit from... highlight and copy the section you want, and paste it into a file. Rinse and repeat until you have all your clips in either their own files (easier to change the order later if need be) or just set the order by adding the new clips to one file.
It's Microsoft man... everything is Cut n Paste.
