Right-o, its opinion time. Not after rating here, or Apollo88 to bitch about how this isnt written right. Let it be known, im not racist. I just hate aboriginals that have lost their roots. They can be found at your local centrelink office, or where i work, whinging that the cost of 2 slabs of VIc Bitter is too expensive and they should be entitled to a discount because 'my ancestors were abused'
This mainly concernes Australians, and moreso the ones that know of our Prime Minister saying 'sorry' to the 'stolen generation'
For all you Americans, think back to the slave-days. Almost the same principal (white man captures / abuses their power over native blacks, 250 years later, our leader says sorry for it)
For years they aboriginals have pissed and moaned about how they want us to say sorry. Our previous prime minister did a great job of avoiding the topic. Anyway, now that its been said, its quietened down the 'elders' or the REAL aboriginals. Yeah, the ones that are actually from the northern terriory, who are genuinely really nice people. Upon taking a trip up north, they are incredibly hospitable people who i would have no hesitations in saying sorry to for my ancestors actions.
What grinds my gears is the other 1-10% of aboriginals "niggers, coons, abbo's" - whatever you like; that believe, as if its written in the fucking bible, that 'reconciliation', goes hand in hand with compensation. Surely you all know of Anthony Mundine. If not, look him up. Google search "complete tosser/idiot/obnoxious/arrogant/loud mouth" and he'll be there. Guaranteed.
He wants to sit down with our current prime minister and discuss compensation for the stolen generation. Sorry just doesnt cut it anymore. What else though, is that theyre asking an estimated $1Billion dollars.
What the fuck for?
Real aboriginals live off the bush, money would be useless to you. ALl that money would do is give the 'bad-apples' of the group more alcohol, drugs etc. Fuck that. Go and earn it, dole-bludgers!
On the flipside, i would support giving the 'stolen-generation' $1B, if it mean total equality. No more 'abstudy centrelink benefits', no more cheap cars, no more tax write-offs, no more cheap groceries, no more unemployment benefits for sitting on their ass. If they were handed that cheque, to distribute as they please, they become equal. Which means if i see them out at the Saloon Bar again next week and somehow headbutt one, its not a hate-crime, its because you spilled my Bundy while i was taking my shot on the pool table. You know who you are, motherfucker.
But i digress... So Uber-dudes and dudettes, tell me what you think about the whole stolen generation fiasco.

The analogy with the US case breaks down because the stolen generation shit went on into the 1960s and 1970s, and lots of those people are actually still alive.
I think it's good on general principle for governments to apologize when they fuck up.
I know people like to pretend that just because there was an election and a different party got to pick the prime minister that it's actually a different government, but that's bullshit-- there was no revolution or coup d'etat, it's the same country with the same states and the same culture.
Compensation is a whole different ballgame. I don't see how it can possibly work. It'd be nice to make a gesture like make it easy, if possible, for people to get reunited with their families if that's what they want, and subsidize their travel to a reunion. But I don't see any realistic way that dropping a big cash bomb can work fairly... and more to the point, are the people who got screwed going to suddenly feel all shiny and happy about their lives? It wasn't a cash loss they suffered and cash isn't going to make it better.

Thanks ilikesteak. Nice to hear an intelligent opinion. It is most valued.
Oh, and i know way more 'aboriginals' than i would prefer to. As earlier stated, the ones from the Northern Territory are some of the best people you are ever likely to meet. Several of the 'residential' ones in and around my area are the ones responsible for giving the other 90% a bad name. That 10percent are the ones im opposed to giving compensation to, as they will simply squander it on crap.

The "I'm not a racist" line is easily one of the worst to use, especially when attempting to put up any intelligent argument.
Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to weigh in on this.
What you don't seem to understand is, the average person thinks on a little below an eighth grade level. All you have to do is look like you're the victim, in order to get something done. Nobody cares about injustice now, because they'd have to actively do something about it as a group, in order to change the culture, rather than throw money at the people related to those who were wronged, a few hundred years later.
Rational thinking cannot exist with your system, nor can it with ours. Rational thinking comes most often from intelligent people, and since those are in the minority by such a large margin, they are hated or feared, wether it be openly or not. You can't have a member of the minority to support the majority.
The working example is this: There are two groups in a small desert village. A member of the "Drink the water" group will win every time, because they are in the majority, who just want to drink the water right now, and worry about running out later. The "Conserve water" group will never win, because nobody wants to conserve the water, even though it will mean they'll have more later, but less now.
It isn't the "Conserve water" group's fault that in a week the whole water supply will be gone, nor is it the fault of the person running for office under the "Drink the water" group's flag, because they happen to have more people who just don't know any better.
My advice is to just let it go. You can't stop people from being the way they are, but you can take advantage of it. Claim you're one of the group who will be getting compensation. If you're good enough at arguing and debating, you can get yourself a piece of the pie.
