I guess rolling down the runway in kuwait was just like getting out of the car in el paso. The weather was clean and breezy and the sun was cooking the ground under my boots. I remember the heat down there, and I thought,"Hell, this is a nice fucking day."
I guess it was that easy when, a day and a half later, we rolled in at night to my home. The home I had leased for at least a year. When we first choppered in to FOB (Forward Operating Base, remember that...)Loyalty, we were met by our friends. It was terrific to see them. We had been sleeping for two hours at a time at odd hours and exploding MRE heaters for days. No showers, just the occasional missile attack. I wasn't in that one, the one that hit between the bunkers, but I heard the story so many Goddamn times that I feel like an authority. History is, indeed, written by the ignorant.
As soon as we hit the ground, it was "take off yer packs, we brought a truck around, here's the beer you were promised, here's the rando iraqi whore with no diseases with whom you get to fornicate for the next year!"
Reality soon kicked me square in the grapes.
I shuffled out the ass-end of the chopper dragging an M-249 machine and endless pounds of ammo, vest, and kevlar. As soon as everyone got outta the bird, a community effort began to get the luggage indoors. You can say what you want about your (our) shitty government, and you can piss and moan all day that our health care system is culturally defunct, but to my death I will defend the soldier. We hit the ground at 2 AM, and by 5 we were not only showered and shaven, but we were assigned tasks for the following morning. You know what? There are thousands and thousands of vets roaming around america looking for work. AHEM! domestic issues....
I settled into that lifestyle slowly, the scheduled meals and the constant missions, the action that keeps me waking up screaming sometimes, just now and then. Next time.
