Last Christmas (2006), I did two small paintings for both my Mom and Grandma. A number of other people in my family expressed a desire in having artwork for the holiday. So this last Christmas (2007), I had a short list of people to do paintings for. Now, I'm by NO means an accomplished painter - in fact, I really don't even like to paint. However, after watching a documentary of Picasso, I had learned of a technique he had sometime used that I fell in love with.
I used that same technique when I did my "Circle Girl" series. ( http://www.ubersite.com/m/110817 ) I ended up doing about nine of them, with three more almost done. I did the same here. First drawing out the image on gesso'ed canvas, I then trace over it with an enamel paint pen. I then color in the image with oil pastel, much like using crayons. I then moisten a brush with turpenoid and blend out the applied oil pastels, actually mixing the paint directly on the canvas. Finally, I go back into the thick sections with brush loaded up with black enamel to fill in any remaining areas.
Yeah, the plan was to do a few paintings this past Christmas. Unfortunately, by the time I started, quite a number of individuals had heard about my plan and had begged for art work as well. I ended up doing 14 paintings in 22 days. A few were copies, like the ones I did for my Mom and Grandma, again. I also learned I have to wait until that damn enamel dries all the way before I take photos: you can even see in some of the ones here, the enamel reflected the light back. Some, the images were horrible.
Like I said, I don't really consider myself a visual artist. At least not anymore... I barely dabble in it on a regular basis, I don't practice enough. Just thought I'd throw these up here, mostly so any OTHER artists out there could see the technique with the oil pastels. It's a really cheap and easy alternative to blowing $200 on a decent set of oils.

You seem to clearly understand the physiology of the human hand as all these subjects' hands are shaped very proportionately and form-correct.
You however seem to have a problem with drawing faces, I think.

That's something I'll never understand about some people.
How can you spend time making or painting something, present it, and include all the things you don't like about it in the presentation?
Shouldn't you think your work is at least "killer bad-ass, living somewhere on the border between perfection and threesomes"? If you don't like something about your own work, why not change it before presenting it?
I realize here that you're only presenting it to an anonymous website, but why would you give them as gifts if you weren't happy with them?

my first impression of the last one was a goddess symbol, with the mother represented by the woman, and the maiden and old woman by the little moons

Not bad.
Your composition on the drummer is really unfortunate - the perspective of the arm and shoulder are fantastic - but the effort is ruined by the giant symbol growing out of the guy's head.
------------
Being the world's foremost authority on everything must be a tremendous responsibility for Rob to bear.
I, on the other hand, am not an art expert so here's a +2 and off you go.

It's a terrible burden to 'bare'.

this readily apparent hit grab of yours is silly.
mva doesn't mean anything, you know? posting twice a day is so simon-esque, and really, do you wanna be compared in ANY way to that guy?
I think it depends what you have going for you in "real life", scourge.
I think we know the answer in this case.

The one's by Alphonse Muche remind me of some prints we have that were done for the 1910(?) World's Fair in Paris. The circles had some more detailed decorations though. I wish I could remember who did them, because they rule.
I do different things, but I still enjoy doing the occasional visual arts like here:
http://www.ubersite.com/m/115024
Unfortunately, I usually only get the chance while I'm at work, so my materials and surface area are limited, because I can't exactly set up an easel and go to town on it with everyone bothering me about paperwork and why aren't I doing what they pay me for.
Fucking Fascists.

Here is some constroctive critisism so you don't get sand in your vagoo and start crying about what Uber has become.
Learn to draw fucking hands, or have people keep their shit in their pockets.
Just to make it easier on you here are a few websites explaining how to draw hands.

I really like them. Your style is simplictic yet the attention to detail is lovely, if that makes sense. Probably not.
They remind me of the iilustrations I had in a book as a child, about fairies andd goblins, that book was Eastern European.
Pretty.

I don't know what you want as far as feedback - I mean its a shame you can't be really proud of your art... sort of takes the fun out of creating it doesn't it?
I don't know - you seem to be going through a 'lack of confidence' phase. You are a talented kid - slow down, take your time. If you think something looks rushed then why bother giving it away? Every time you see it you will be filled with regret.
Anyway, keep on keepin' on.
