Sacrilicious - Because atheism, in every sense of the word, is a denial of ANY higher power and the spiritual self. We're talking hardcore atheists: the kinds of people that get pissed off when they hear "In God we trust", and try and get the line "One nation, under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance.

The kind of "atheism" that you're describing falls more along the lines of agnosticism, which acknowledges a higher power or spiritual connection, but not necessarily "God".

The problem is that all too often I hear people claim to be atheists, when they really aren't. Trouble is, too many people threw the word around entirely too much and ultimately forgot about the literal meaning behind it altogether.

It takes a LOT of work to be an atheist and to be spiritually lazy. To be an atheist, you have to be prepared to denounce anything and everything spiritual and mysterious in nature. Sure, an atheist will know the difference between right and wrong, but I will ask you this:

If a true atheist is also a law-abiding "decent" individual, is it because they truly want to better themselves? Or is it to avoid the hassle of facing prison for breaking the codes of social conduct?

1. Tell me about one bad habit you have and why you're not willing to give it up.

I've got a bad procrastination habit. I'll give it up tomorrow.

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves?

I was just thinking about this before I came here. Cliches. Or people who use big words in the wrong context and then toot their own horn for using said big word. It fucking pisses me off. The cliches thing, just because everybody in my fucking english classes like to say things or use metaphors that they think are so fucking profound, but i've heard it said the same way so many times before that i just tune out, man. i cant keep listening. or today, some kid i know was trying to use personify, and then pointed out the fact that he NEVER uses big cool fun awesome words like that so he relishes in the moment when he finally has the opportunity. he said all this. i called him out in front of a bunch of people for being a fucking idiot, which im sure was equally impressive.

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?

earning a swimming scholarship, which i later lost, but the fact that i got it in the first place was kind of cool. also, staying alive has been a major accomplishment considering all the near death opportunities i've had. by all rights, i should be dead. i will surely die at a young age and contrary to the standard, it will probably not involve alcohol. i am comfortable with all of this. if i live to be a geezer im going to be arthritic and diabetic. all the joy in my life (sports and eating) will be sucked away and i'll die an unhappy old curmudgeon. plus my grandma just died of lou gehrig's disease, and apparently that is genetic. i pretty much owe it to myself to die as soon after procreating as possible.

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'

there are two. one was nichole, the other was amy. i could marry either of them and be very happy with my life. i'll probably never see either of them in the flesh again. i would tell nichole, honestly, not a day goes by that i dont think about her for any reason. i talk to her online and i ask her if she'd like to get lunch but i dont think shes interested. i dont blame her. i was an immature shithead when we were together and she has no reason to believe im any different now. i honestly dont know what i would say to amy. that was the problem with that relationship. neither of us ever opened up. she went to school and we stopped calling each other. i cheated on her and that was the biggest mistake of my life. i'll never do that again. she just graduated with honors and is now a nurse, and is apparently very happy with her life. havent talked to her in a long time.

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?

because it really really helps. no bullshit. my dad described prayer as a pacifier once, and i think that is the most accurate representation i can think of. while i think god is real, i'm sure it's also got a bit of a placebo effect on people that makes them feel better.

Extra Credit: What was the last purchase you made online?

I think I bought the song Lake Shore Drive by some fucking band right before my old computer crapped out on me. that was on itunes. besides music, it might have been some big ass stuffed horse i bought for nichole three years ago. i dont do much shopping online.

1. Tell me about one bad habit you have and why you're not willing to give it up.
Too many vices to name here, but the worst one would probably be smoking pot. It truly is a detrimental drug and it slows everything down. But, with time, that monkey will be shaken.

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves?
Tardiness, dirtiness, people who try to fill silence with inane conversation, people who claim that their babies are "geniuses" because the kid picked his nose a month before the baby across the street.

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?
Staying (relatively) sane through a tumultuous and ugly divorce (my parent's, not mine).......being a good person

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'

I'm sorry. I was immature....among other things.

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?
People don't turn to God...they turn to themselves and use their conscience as their guide.

Cracking my knuckles, drinking to get drunk I suppose. If I open a bottle of wine, I drink it and then another full bottle.
I guess that can't be too good.

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves?
One uppers. I hate people that no matter what have to one up a story or possessions that they may have.
I also can't stand those who kiss ass.

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?
Snow skiing and water skiing with one leg

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'
If you deeply cared for me and perhaps even loved me why would you allow outside opinions and beliefs influence your feelings for me, which were the chief reasons the relationship ended?

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?
I'm not really sure but if it makes them happy and provides them with a positive outlook on life, good for them.

Thanks, Cap'n. I can think of one possible exception though: when someone "gets away" by dying? I had a friend who fell in love with someone who took two years to die, and afterwards when she really started hitting the sauce with regularity, she would say, "But what if he had lived? What could have happened?" I would have to tell her, "NOTHING! Nothing could have happened, Lauren, because there is no 'could have', he's DEAD. Beren is dead. It's over." So even in that case, there's no point in even speculating. Maybe it really is true: "If it was meant to be..."

Felt like using real names. Bite me.

Nothing. I know his reply to everything I would want to say.
I was drunk and tried to talk to him about very important concerns in a very carless manner and it all got way out of hand and just made him horribly angry.

1. Tell me about one bad habit you have and why you're not willing to give it up.
Over the past year or two, I've made a serious effort to live healthier in a few different ways. But I still probably curse too much. I'm not willing to give it up because fuck that. I behave around children and adults can just deal with me. I have to deal with them. Sometimes that makes me curse.

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves?
Closed-mindedness. Having strong convictions is noble, but becoming so set in one's ways so as to refuse to even consider new ideas and continue to learn and grow as a person just out of egotism or fear of change is pathetic to me.

Also, religious hypocrisy, and use of religion as a tool of convenience. People who can recite things like "judge not, lest ye be judged" and then turn around and judge the fuck out of anyone different than them. I've met plenty of people who claim to follow a particular moral path, until it's actually time to man up and show the compassion for others that their faith dictates.

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?
I'm proud of my loyalty to others and my ability to forgive some serious betrayal.
I'm proud of a lot of little things in my life that might not qualify to others as conventional milestones, but mean a hell of a lot to me.

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'
The one that makes the biggest impression on me was less an ex and more a best friend/potential relationship. I'd say that I hope by now he's learned to be a better judge of character, and that I hope the man he used to be managed to survive the relationship he was in when we stopped being friends. I'd say I hope he knows why and how much he hurt me and how much I still think about him 10 years later.

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?
For hope. And in many cases, I think that once someone feels powerless over a situation, whether or not that's true, it brings them comfort to feel that someone somewhere has ultimate control.

Those who claim to be atheists are simply spiritually lazy. You don't have to believe in a divine power to better yourself, but the fact that no meditation takes place to reflect on one's life is self-destructive.

I disagree with this statement. To imply that someone who is an atheist is spiritually lazy sounds small-minded to me. There are very many people in this world who do not believe in a divine creator, but who still feel a connection to the earth and the people on it. They have a clear sense of right and wrong, and personal responsibility. Why would you ever make an assumption that just because someone doesn't believe in a divine creator means that they don't have a means of self-reflection?

2. I hate people who'll listen to you vent or gush about something, only to carry on about how much better or worse their own situation is than YOURS WILL EVER BE. 3. One: I finally got to meet George A. Romero. It was the night of the 13th of this month, at Grauman's Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Two: John Landis was there too, and he was a nice, funny guy.

Ain't climbed no mountains, mothafucka.

4. Never had an ex 'get away', mutual breakups don't count.

5. Not necessarily the Bible or God or Jesus specifically. I mean, if that's what they've found for themselves already, then yeah. 'Higher powers', in any sense. I guess that people don't know how to cope with rough patches in their lives sometimes, as they struggle to understand how things have derailed for them, and their desperation gets to point where they'll try anything to put things back in place. I mean, are we talking about people who don't usually put faith in God, or what?

Nobody ever has a sense of accountability anymore. That pisses me off.

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?

I saw a woman get rear-ended in her car so hard that her face smashed into her steering wheel and she lost a bunch of her teeth. Me and two other men directed traffic around her while I called 911. A cop then yelled at me and told me to get my car out of the middle of the road.

I'm also proud of every moment spent with my daughter. I don't need to get into detail on that, but she is the light of my world.

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'

"I didn't cheat on you, you dumb broad." She 'got away' because she's a moron.

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?

Like it or not, people have a spiritual connection with SOMETHING. God and the Bible are probably the most common. Others have a spiritual connection with their families or their children, and some even have this connection with work or money. This connection goes beyond what gives us comfort. These things can give us answers when we meditate on them. Those who claim to be atheists are simply spiritually lazy. You don't have to believe in a divine power to better yourself, but the fact that no meditation takes place to reflect on one's life is self-destructive. The Bible is probably the most widely accepted because 90% of the world's population wants to be a good person and lead a good life. The bible reaffirms this for us, as its words focus mainly on being true to oneself and to God.

The problem lies not in what God you have, but our BELIEF in that god, most notably with the monotheistic religions. I say that belief is a bad thing, because BELIEF, in every sense of the word, does not leave any room for IDEAS. What people don't realize is that the function of churches, temples, mosques, and other places of worship isn't simply to sit there and have someone dictate your God to you. The most important function of a place of worship is to share your ideas about God among your community. It is in this way that we can arrive at some sort of PERSONAL truth in listening to one another and sharing our ideas.

It is this persuit of truth that spirituality becomes necessary in our lives. I myself believe in the fundamentals of Catholicism, but I am by no means your conventional Catholic. I've found my God in my own way, and I let the words of the Bible speak to me on a personal level.

Excuses excuses! It's cool though and I see what you mean about the drama stuff. I used to lover the Soprano's and watched it regularly but when I moved back to England I kind of forgot about it. I'm just not a fan of TV in general really. I've only seen Dexter advertised as I don't have the channel it's on, looks pretty good though.

I've read a couple things by Philip Roth, not that though, and I happen to think that Ben Elton is a total wanker so I doubt I'd enjoy anything he wrote! Currently reading a lot of Paul Auster, 'In The City of Last Things' is phenomenal.

Cool. Yes actually you're pretty much right about most of that I think ;) I love Peep Show and the other "cringe comedies" that occupy the same niche - Alan Partridge, The Office etc.

Yes I guess the US sitcoms do tend to be bit formulaic. Ever noticed that most of the jokes are based around someone saying something and then something happens to contradict it immediately afterwards? Even my beloved Frasier falls back on that a bit. Scrubs is fantastic though, and quite original. But there is a real tour de force of US dramas and series in recent years - stuff like Sopranos, Dexter etc.

I was pretty trashed when I wrote that! (been up all night) so I don't think I got the point across very well, or even figured out what the point was! But basically I have a bee in my bonnet about my fellow Brits saying "dumb Americans" all the time. Of course any kind of generalisation is wrong, and of course I appreciate there are some real boneheads across the pond too :)

I just read American Pastoral by Phillip Roth. You read that? Incredible book. And from the Brit camp I also just read The First Casualty by Ben Elton, which was also brilliant. Both of those I highly recommend.

cat_head, the reason you're a moron for what you said about Americans is that you're just making huge and sweeping generalisations based on the few Americans you've actually met. Just like in Britain there are intelligent and well spoken Americans, but there are also people so utterly backward it's astounding. Having lived in the country and been to many of the different states I can honestly say that stupid Americans are worse than stupid Brits.

You go on to say that American sitcoms are good. I'm utterly stumped as to why you think this is true since two of the most popular sit-coms, Friends & Scrubs (over here) are just the same jokes re-hashed into different scenarios. American television shows in general run for far too many series and get seriously boring after a while. What's more is that you must be watching some awful TV if you think that the best shows are American; what about 'The Mighty Boosh', 'Peep Show', 'That Mitchell and Webb Look', 'The Office', 'Mock The Week', 'QI'... I could go on, but all of these shows are far funnier and more intelligent than much of the comedy I've seen out of the States recently.

Finally, that you boil down 'culture' to 'basically film and music these days' is ignorant and wrong. Granted, you throw books in as an afterthought. Yes, the US is probably a world leader when it comes to film, but far more interesting low budget efforts come from Britain, France, and Germany. America is fine for a blockbuster, but precious few indie films get the attention they deserve; the same is true of music. And as for books, I don't know what era of American literature you're reading, but the majority of modern stuff is pretentious and verbose. I suppose the culture thing is really a matter of opinion, but I think you're wrong.

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves?
-I have no tolerance for people who play the victim at every turn. No, not everyone is out to get you. Yes, I do think it's obnoxious how you categorize every misfortune as a direct attack on you as a person. Grow the fuck up and realize shit happens, it's seriously pathetic.

btw one final comment that I always want to say on this site - Brits: stop bashing Americans! It's a prejudice like any other. I am English and I must say that almost every US person I've ever met has not been stupid or ignorant, and puts us to shame when it comes to manners, vocabulary (yes!), and general sophistication. If they "don't get irony", then why are their sitcoms so good, and why is every good show on TV these days a US import? People say the US is devoid of culture. Wake up! Culture is basically film and music these days (and books, and most of my favourite books are US too), and the US leads the world in that. So there.

While I agree that most American bashing is pretty needless, you're a fucking moron for all of this.

That, and watching youtube videos until 3 in the morning...old Tex Avery and Warner Bros cartoons of the 40s and 50s are so much better than today!

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves?

People who can't mind their own business, and who have to get involved in drama that doesn't concern them in any way. On a related note, snitches and those who betray their friends for personal gain also get low points in my book.

Academic career. Getting into all my colleges so far, with a lot of good offers, is a good repayment for all the work I've done.
Probably a lot of smaller things too. Just helping people out, talking through problems. Nothing that really jumps to mind. I'm proud of the more mundane things, rather than anything life saving and dramatic.

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?

Personally, hard times in my own life have made me see things <i>more<\i>, rather than less, clearly. To me this has resulted in the development of a pragmatic and empirical viewpoint on existence. Some may argue that scientific/logical thoughts of this kind indicate a less soulful or spiritual point of view than your average bible-basher, but I would say that's bullshit. Anyway - I don't want to get into that right now - please comment if you want to discuss that.

? What was the last online purchase you made ?

Alright I'm really gonna bore you now. An aborted purchase actually. Having been informed that I'd missed Bloodsport on TV last night myself and a colleague felt a sudden urge to watch it (cue lengthy reminiscence about the glorious heyday of JCVD films in the 80's (check this site: http://www.ruthlessreviews.com/reviews.cfm/id/772/back/80/page/bloodsport.html - this guy is hilarious - talk of JC wearing chinos that "even Don Johnson would balk at" Gold.) But can you believe that the dvd has been discontinued and will now set you back at least £20 for a copy! It's a fucking collector's item! And apparently JC had to fight to get the thing released. Bet he never thought it would be selling for that price, the coke-head, kick-boxing expert, useless-acting total genius that he is.

But anyway I actually recommend his latest film - "From Hell". He plays a heroin-addicted cop (good start) who, surprisingly gets half his brain shot away a mere 40 mins into the film and is supposedly dead. But then he comes back from his coma and still kicks some ass even though he's tarded and still on the scag! Good to see JC pushing the envelope a bit, though he still can't break out of that hiked-up chino look. I must admit it seems he slips into the role of retard junkie much more easily than anything else (plus in Replicant (also good) he gives a very good portrayal of a blank-brained clone). A bit too close to home I fear... Though I never saw a junkie perform the sort of roundhouses that he comes out with in Bloodsport.

OK, the one interesting and worthwhile thing in this reply: Bolo Yeung, who played Chong Li in Bloodsport, was apparently 50 years old at the time of filming. No way!!

Alright, enough! Goodnight & peace out uber stranger hostile friends though.

1. Tell me about one bad habit you have and why you're not willing to give it up.
I have just horrible sleeping habits. I often like staying up way later than everyone else, and one of the ways I often like to stay up is to keep drinking until some people eat breakfast. And chronic masturbating

2. What traits that people have, grate on your nerves? saying something is funny and not laughing, or making a joke then saying it was a joke. We get it was a joke you braying jackass...jk!

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?
I took a year off before college and worked for a non-profit. hated the job and company but the kids I worked with were worth it often(sometimes I wanted to uppercut a few).
Getting into and staying in college. Most my family was pretty surprised when that happened.

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?' And, why did he/she 'get away?'
I wish you gave better head and I hadn't drank so much whiskey and I could've finished(I'm being serious)

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?
It's easy escape. I don't believe in it but the idea of an afterlife and to be so rewarded for living a good life would be nice.

Shlongy continues to be the most down-to-earth person here.

Mine:
1. Uber.
2. High-pitched squeaky voices, wiggers (white people who think trying to mimic a stereotype of a black person is cool), and women to want to "save" themselves for marriage.
3. I am pretty computer-savvy and I can pick up women. One of them wouldn't be much of an accomplishment, but both of them at once kicks ass.
4. ... I have nothing to say.

1. Tell me about one bad habit you have and why you're not willing to give it up.

I got to the library to read old sci-fi, I mean pre-Bradbury stuff, and after finishing I ejaculate onto the title page.

Then I plagiarise the living shit out of it.

3. Tell me about two things you've done in life that you're most proud of?

4. If you could, what would you say to the one ex that 'got away?'

And, why did he/she 'get away?'

She jumped off the bed while I was cumming and dove through the double paned glass, ripping the screen and flying out the 2nd floor window into a passing truck filled with rabid rottweilers. She sure wanted to get the hell away from me.

5. Why do so many turn to the Bible and God after turbulence in their life?

I prefer the Qu'ran.
