There is a product out there available to the viewing public, a remote control that will turn off generally every television you can aim it at. I implore you all to buy one and the next time you are in an airport, at a bar, at the doctor's office, in your own home...and there is a newscast blaring...use it.
Turn off the fucker and watch in amazement as people start realizing their proximity to one another and their ability to converse once again.
Here is a challenge for you...simple as it is.
Provide me with a logical argument for why I should ever watch a news program again.

Back in high school, when the universal remotes first came out, we would turn the classroom TV's on and off all the time.

D men like Phanuef are the hardest commodity to come by in the NHL today...in my opinion.
They are, indeed, the rarest breed. Tough as shit..skilled, booming shot...best open ice hitter in the league...23 years old, if that...and not afraid to throw hands.
And Calgary has TWO of them...Regehr, as well.
Now if we could just get that assface to get rid of his "shield" he'd be a total stud.

heh.
Seems to me, human nature being what it is and all, that most folks would view that kind of activity as annoying. I mean I think its funny, and an interesting theory - but chances are the communication would involve tracking down and beating the fuck out of the pest who was turning off the TV.
I also agree with Lishy - the problem isn't so much the presentation of information - it lies more in the filtering and processing of it.

I dislike people.
Well, that's only partially true. Let's just say that they aren't my favorite creatures.
From what I've seen, Berty doesn't indulge in general misanthropy. In fact, when a post is made poking fun at overweight, anime, LARP addicts, Bert-Bert sticks up for them. He's always got a positive spin.
He's the white knight champion of freaks and the unsavory.
As for me, I just say to let natural selection take care of the problem.
So, here's to Berty. *champagne glasses clink*

I am glad you asked.
As a former upstate New Yorker who knows how much the Buffalo area loves their Sabres but has to deal with cheap owners (see: Briere, Biron, Drury, etc.)in a very small market...Well, that has no bearing on my opinion on this trade.
But I did spend like 4 hours on NHL.com tracking the action yesterday afternoon.
Here's what I think.
I'm glad to see that they did SOMETHING.
Bernier hasn't ever improved in his first three years- he's a big guy but kind of soft - like pretty much ALL of the Shraks forwards, with the exception of Clowe, who's been out for three months. He's close to coming back so that neutralizes the loss of Bernier. I am a Bernier fan but I kept waiting for him to turn into Cam Neely...Hell, at this point I would have settled for Bill Guerin, for shittsake.
Now Campbell, if they can sign him, is a great addition- obviously an All Star - but still, another "finesse" player on the blue line. But this team DID need some offensive help from the blueline. Carle hasn't had the year that he had last year, nor has Erhoff. Of course, it doesn't help that this team has very few forwards that can find the net.
The Rivet deal at last year's deadline has worked out well so I hope this one will too, but I really think the Sharks need two things- a physical defenseman like a Phaneuf and a physical forward like a Lucic.
Shelley will help but you KNOW he'll never dress during the playoffs.
I'm happy for Rob Davison...if he gets to dress for the Isles. The fans will like him.

all the fancy wording in the world won't hide the simple fact that you view the rest of humans as less than youself Berty.
I hate to say it and wish it were a joke but look deep down...while people may entertain you....the thought that they are there to serve that purpose is proof positive to what I'm saying here.

You work in HR because you do hate people. As humans we have to surround ourselves with the things we hate. HR provides you with a constant litany of targets.
---------------------------------
You make me sound like a monster. Referring to the people I help out in my job as 'targets' is abhorrent. Occaisonally the Company does require the back of a firm hand to be administered to wayward souls and the needs of the Company do occaisonally require us to part ways with people perhaps before we would mutually like to do so, but I do not enjoy these aspects of my work. Of course it is vital to remember that in every adversity lies oppurtunity: restructuring of departments has enabled many employees to persue career options they may not have otherwise considered.
Anyway, enough apologising for my work. I like people. They're hilarious. Did I ever tell you about the time they employed this schizophrenic in the assembly line? He hated being touched but the mad things he'd say and do were hysterical.

I love people! I work in HR for God's sake! Surely if I hated people I'd work in accounting or as a train driver or something equally full of weirdos.
Now I don't like beggers or charity or birthdays or christmas or people who turn right on busy days or people who wave their hands in the air like they just don't care, but I think you'll find that that actually leaves a pretty darn sizable remainder of human beings whom I can confidently claim to like. It may even be a majority.
As for my mannerisms, well...

Fair enough. Though isn't it true that only part of the filtering goes on as you watch/read? There are the immediate, mental cues you may have, and then there is the retrospective part when you acquire info from other sources, start a dialogue with others, etc. But you do have a point.

You shouldn't have to significantly exercise your brain to absorb the information, passive is fine. The real exercise should come when you consider/interpret/act on the information you just received.
I'm the wrong person to ask though. My schedule doesn't allow for much TV news. I have to read it all online. The Daily Show is the closest I usually get these days. I do miss Action News and WNN with Peter Jennings.

The exercise is not in the absorbing it is in the filtering isn't?

The last thing uber users need is someone persuading them to be even more cuntish than they already are. I don't know about you but when I walk into a bar and sit down to watch TV it is because I can no longer be bothered with human communication.
Why? Because I'm tired. Why? Because some of us work for a living.
Now STFU, put the news back on, and GTFO with your saft tv remote.
