I'm amazed you picked up on this. Her name was Gwen Stacy in the comics; they made up the name Mary Jane Watson for the movies to get the kids hooked on the drugs. You're very astute.

my brother named his dog sativa.
he smokes a lot of weed. an awful lot.
it only took a few years before it didn't make me feel like like a big ass to have to call her by name in front of strangers.

"I never smoked marijuana," Stan Lee - the creator of such classic Marvel Comics characters as the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, and the Avengers - recalled of the 1960s. "When I named Spider-Man's girlfriend Mary Jane, it was only after a while that somebody said, 'You're pretty nervy giving her the nickname of marijuana!' I had no idea that's what it was."

If you accept superhero stories as modern mythology, and most early mythology was based in people inhaling illicit substances, I suppose it would follow well enough.

I hope so. It's about time they started letting teenagers know that pot isn't bad. I'm going through withdrawal from a prescription drug right now and it's preventing me getting high. It's ironic that the drug I was prescribed by a doctor has created so many problems for me and yet my use of an illegal drug has done nothing but improve my quality of life.

My cat's name is Mary Jane. There may or may not be some drug sub-text in that; I'll let you judge for yourself.

No, but there are plenty of excuses for fans of the comic itself, or understand basic physics to point out problems.
