What gives it buoyance
is how faithfully meaningful this ploy is,
how afraid of glowing this boy is,
sparking and spitting out
what we thought about
when we knew it.
Just knew it.
I thought about a you that hadn't quite cocooned yet.
I thought about spoiling your looming uncouth when
it was still new.
He followed the knuckles and turns in the branches,
crawling along twig by twig
(what a delicate stance
copy the jaybird dancing)
until the branches met and the soft wings leapt out,
tails like eyelashes fanning
and something inside his body expanding.
