The old familiar tune pops into my head every time I see certain commercials.

Americans will know the ones I am talking about.

The "Truth" and "Above the Influence" campaigns.

See, it seems to me that we are sending the kids of today the right message. We are going old school on their asses in this age of Grand Theft Auto and MySpace.

We are letting them know exactly how the world was when the Bradys roamed the fertile plains of America.

We are letting them know that the two most dangerous substances known to man are tobacco and marijuana.

The Truth campaign focuses solely on tobacco. I am starting to think that the whole thing is a conspiracy set up by the alcohol producers of the world. Alcohol has the same health issues that cigarettes do, but it is never mentioned. Also, you have the crime statistics to play with as well. Last I checked, drunk driving was a crime but you can smoke and drive freely...for now.

Tobacco producers must tell you of the health risks of smoking and smokeless tobacco, but the liquor and beer make nary a mention of any ill effects. They do, however, politely ask you to "Drink Responsibly".

Then you have the Above the Influence people.

I do not partake in the dope, not because of its legality but simply because it isn't my bag. Personally, I feel that it is utterly ridiculous that we, as a nation, spend BILLIONS of dollars a year in an effort to wipe out what is the least dangerous drug of all time.

With that being said, shouldn't an anti-drug movement focus on things like, oh say, meth, crack, heroin, and the like?

When these ads rear their ugly head, I envision Mrs. Brady holding a cigarette or joint and shaking her head in disapproval at Greg.

Poor Greg.

He should be more responsible and get tanked or shoot up.

Like a proper American.

the long-terms side effects of smoking (cigarettes) and drinking are infinitely worse than anything that could result in the casual smoking of marijuana, despite what the media/teachers/parents/government tells you

I just don't see the difference between tobacco (which is just as addictive as some illegal drugs) and marijuana.

There's a rather big difference between smoking a cigarette and smoking a doobie.

About three fuckin' cheeseburgers.

I'm really not too sure what to make of this.

kinda wierd to quote hurty but i'm kinda in the same boat. it's also funny that you say booze has the same health issue as tobacco, i mean they both have thier health impacts but the same issues? maybe i'm just being obtuse.

Whenever I see those "Above the Influence" commercials, the first thing to pop in my head is...
"Well isn't that an influence on young people's minds as well? Shouldn't they also be above YOUR influence?"

If you are not going to the pub at all.....Who are you and what have you done with Drogo?

Agreed about the cider, but it has an interesting buzz. Plus I just realised it's three in the afternoon, I'm drinking/working and buggering about on the internet and I genuinely can't tell you what day of the week it is. I have never ever not known what day of the week it is.

That alone is cause for another cider!

Lager swilling lout you. I would be willing to bet my next drink you're going down the pub when you finnish work. Am I right?

I'm drinking strongbow from a can as we speak. I should be scraping varnish, but the rain is back. Bollocks to it. I hate cider, but it's the only beverage left on board.

Technically, anything that alters you in some way is a drug

I knew that make-up would be the death of me, damn it all started with just a little foundation, then lip gloss, from there it was all down hill and now I just cant pop out to the shops without my slap on.

*waves fist in the air*

And I never learnt to read!!!!!!!!

Technically, anything that alters you in some way is a drug, tobacco and alcohol are drugs like marijuana. I just don't see the difference between tobacco (which is just as addictive as some illegal drugs) and marijuana.
