White Americans like to be liked. They also like to try to make amends for things their ancestors may or may not have done wrong. Take for instance the politically correct movement. No longer do we have a simple and efficient way of categorizing people and groups but instead we have a long, complicated classification system.
The worst of which is the term "African-American".
This term should mean two things; you are of African birth and now you hold an American citizenship.
This, however, is not the meaning behind this phrase. In reality, it means "You are black, but we have dubbed that word 'insensitive' so now we are calling you black without calling you black. Understand?"
This term wouldn't be so bad if it was actually correct in ever instance. Instead, it is fundamentally flawed.
Take for instance Dave Matthews.
Dave Matthews is literally an African-American. He was born in South Africa and is now a naturalized American citizen. Would you ever refer to him in this way, though? No. Why? Because he is white.
Now, let's take a quick look at Africa and blacks:

i would called them darkies but for some reason that term has also been deemed inappropriate.
i am not sensitive to people who bitch about being called names. my friends call me white guy because i have light skin, but im filled with the blackest of hate on the inside. my soul is the smoldering hearth wherein once was a raging inferno. so dont call me white, even though my motherfucking skin is white.

All black people are of African origin. But the case can be made that all white people are of African origin as well. We all had to come from somewhere, and the chances of the human race resulting from convergent evolution are so slim it's virtually impossible.
Anyway I would never refer to a Jamaican or an Australian Aborigine as African-American. At the very least, you have to be an American to be called African-American.
I need a drink. Badly.

When I was about 8 or so, I drew a picture of a monster truck and I was trying to think of a good name for it. Jungle Bunny sounded like the hottest shit since the Combat Wombat. Jungle Bunny just sounds like a badass name for a monster truck. Looking back, I'm glad I went with Master Blaster or some shit like that. That could have been an ugly situation in a predominantly black Boston public school. You'd think I could've gotten away with it since I'm a mutt, but that actually meant I didn't have any white OR black friends to get my back when 80% of the classroom jumped me.
[sigh] And Mom wondered why I got kicked out of summer school for carrying a butterfly knife.

You have a point, but a lot of your reasoning is flawed. However, you are right about this - calling blacks who have been in the USA for 200 years but are still called "African-Americans" is like calling original descendants of the Mayflower pilgrims "English-Americans".

I don't call them African-Americans. If they live here in America and have Citizenship, I call them Americans. If not, I call them Kenyans or Jamaicans Congians (Congoliums?) or Mozambiquians (Mozombies?)
Nah, know what? I'm gonna start calling every black person a Mozombie or a Congolium.

I had a Jamacian teacher that if you called him African-American, he would more than likely kill you right there in front of the whole class.
