Atonement: as the equation, with Beowulf and 10,000 B.C. each acting in place of variable and sum. Acting to rewrite the Beowulf myth, Arthurian myth, and Christian iconic roots. Seen through McEwan's theory it's the right thing to be doing. And...well, I agree. Angelina worked it in Beowulf. Nobody out there who could have made it sexier. Brilliant movie. Watched it seven times. Still picking things out of it: Grendel is a hermaphrodite, the dragon is a fish, and all of the men in the movie are subservient to women's sexual symbolism (crowns, shields, chendeliers.) Anyway. Where is the line drawn between insinuating a question by defying convention and preconception as opposed to outright character alteration. However, considering who the writer/director team consis of you're, closer probably closer in defining their intent.

No need to speculate on this kind of thing, Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary are very much alive and Gaiman at least is quite available to discuss his writing. Personally, I think you're attempting to do for literary criticism with this post what the screenwriters did with the movie: make the viewer (reader) ask what the point is of heroes (critics) by exaggerating and satirizing the subject until the dissonance between the ideal and the reality becomes jarringly inescapable. Hm, that reminds me of Tolkien's famous essay on Beowulf called "The Monsters and the Critics". Heh.

First, I'm talking about gender balanced media portrayals, NOT condoning masculine submission.
Secondly, the character in Beowulf is, as the monster states, a "fool". He's strong and war-capable, but what else? Oh, and since water is associated with feminine strength throuout the movie the race could be interpreted as a black guy and a white guy giving it a go with the feminine body in a sexual sense. And since Beowulf LOSES, it equates to the directors making a "Black Guys are Well Hung" joke. Oh and all the seamonsters he kills by poking them through the eye, that's meant to symbolize rape. The movie makes Beowulf look like a piece of shit. But only if you have the quivering ear to hear the subtext.

beowulf in that movie is like the epitomy of baddass
was given a kingdom for beating a giant with his bear hands and did it in probly the least gay way a naked man could wrestle with something.
he could outswim a god, and manhandle a group of seamonsters while doing it... sure he lost the race but got it on with a mermaid while he was at it.
he then fucked a montser
he fathered a dragon
he had a young queen AND a mistress... they both knew about each other and they didnt mind (probly figured he was too much of a man and would have to share less one of them gets fucked to death from his undoubltedly amazing prowess.
he had others willing to give their lives for him and he was always willing to tell them to get the fuck out of the way so he can single handedly take on EVERYTHING on his own
without hesitation he cut his own fucking arm off simply to extend his reach
all in all beowulf was the ultimate man. real, fictional, or otherwise
