It's been five years. Five hundred billion dollars and counting. Thousands of lives. And those fuckers still can't get along. How much longer are we going to babysit them? Because, you know, when we finally do get out of there, whether it's a year from now or a hundred years, they'll go right back to what they've always done: killing each other in big, bloody bunches. Vying for control and avenging past slights and injuries. Meanwhile, the liberals are making monkeys of us, Russia is laughing at us and China is loving every minute of it, nudging North Korea with one hand and creeping toward Taiwan with the other. It's time to get the fuck out of Iraq. Iraq is another Mid East albatross around our collective neck. (Can you guess what the other one is?)
A wise British Colonialist once said, "There are two ways to deal with an Arab: either your boot is on his neck or he's at your throat. Someone like Saddam Hussein will eventually gain control in Iraq because that's the only type of leadership those assholes understand. A Western-style democracy won't last a year without the US military to prop it up. Just like Afghanistan.
You know what I think is going to happen? We'll eventually have to turn the whole fucking litter box over to someone like Saddam or the old Shah of Iran. And then we'll get blamed for propping up another "brutal dictatorship," even though they'll pretend to have elections and all that shit. The fucking libs will be short-stroking it all over the place, pretending to be outraged at all the human rights abuses happening under "our bastard." And then some asshole like the Ayatola will take over, just like what happened in Iran, and it'll be the same fucking story all over again. Fuck!
$12,000,000,000.00 a month. Fuck!

If you don't mind my asking, what is your plan? It sounds a little ominous.
-----
I don't mind at all. My plan isn't ominous in any way. I'll redistribute some investments and minimize debt-reduction efforts, make sure any commodities that may become scarce are in hand, adopt a Mexican kid and have her buy land there, that kind of stuff. No big deal.

in all seriousness, if you took the money spent on trying to tame
the sand niggers to get their oil you could have made a serious dent in
rolling out hydrogen infrastructure by now... wake up america you are only doing yourself harm,
keep the money and just bomb the fuckers from time to time so they understand what will happen
if they try to buy or manafacture nukes. more to the point if the price of oil goes down the toilet
they have no power and are no longer a problem.

My parents live in China. They have no political interest in the war beyond how it affects their access to energy (oil). The Chinese are a very pragmatic people, not really prone to the machoistic postering that characterises American foreign policy.
----------------
Machoistic posturing. Machoistic postering sounds like what happens around here.
That's a laughable statement. The Chinese are almost as bad as the North Koreans when it comes to machoistic posturing. All right, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but just ask the Taiwanese. Or what about the incident a few years ago when they crashed into our radar plane and then held the plane and the crew hostage after it made an emergency landing?
But even if you assume they are strictly pragmatic, it's in their best interest to see US influence on world events weakened by the war. Which is what's happening.

Everyone is pragmatic, phallic. You could buy an xbox over a PS3, because you this xbox has better games and you want to save money, and that would be pragmatic. You could buy all three gaming systems and a computer, because you don't want to miss any of the good games, and that would be pragmatic. You could buy a dog over a loaf of bread, because you never plan on feeding your kids anyway, and that would be pragmatic.
You could start a war in iraq, because you want to protect your oil interests, and that would be pragmatic.

Usually, going from "brutal dictatorship" to "brutal dictatorship" is free. All you have to do is mind your own goddamn business. Our "fiscally conservative" party found a way to make it cost trillions of dollars. These are the same assholes who won't spare a penny for our public schools.
Don't forget. Don't let those who supported this quagmire distance themselves. Bury the fucking Republicans in November.

Do you reeeealy think one party is any better than the other? Do you reeeeeeeeeeealy think either party gives a fuck about you or me or this country? Give me break.
-----
X54 - No, of course I don't reeeealy think either party has anything other than their own agendas in mind. Thing is, what's made public of the Libertarian and Republican agendas coincides with my agenda a lot better than does what the Dems and Socialists make public. Thus I vote Libertarian and/or Republican, and make sure I have a plan in case this nation that generally takes "Survivor" more seriously than the Presidential race makes another electoral mistake.
-------------------
Well, I agree with you that the Republicans talk the talk on more issues than the Democrats. And I too have voted Republican or Libertarian all my voting life--including for Bush, twice. But God damn it, they sure as hell don't walk the walk any more. They're supposed to be the party of fiscal responsibility and sound foreign policy. They say one thing and do the opposite. What's the point of voting for their agenda if all they're doing is paying lip service to it?
How's that saying go? "A conservative is a liberal that got mugged," or something like that? Well there ought to be a corollary: "A liberal is a conservative who voted for George Bush." Because that asshole mugged every one of us. And if McCain is bent on staying in Iraq for another hundred years, then I'm sitting this next election out. Fuck'em. Fuck me.
If you don't mind my asking, what is your plan? It sounds a little ominous.

FilledWithHate - this and nothing more.
I recognize the source of the 'facts' you put forth below. I've read the New York Times and Washington Post and AP articles on the cost/intent/duration of the war as obviously you have. But unlike you, I didn't stop reading with the liberal side of the issue. An informed opinion is a balanced one with all pertinent facts weighed before a decision is made. Mine is an informed opinion; yours is not.
As to the outcome of the election in November, well, it's clear you'll be voting against the Republicans because you don't like President Bush. That's simply idiotic. He's not running this time, you know? If you would cast your vote intelligently, read up on what all the candidates are saying, and look at their experience and voting records. Are you aware that your hopes for a Dem future, Clinton and Obama, have less than eight years combined federal-level experience? You weren't aware of that inconvenient fact until just now, were you? And you want that kind of polictical noob to be running the the most powerful nation on Earth? I wouldn't hire an engineer to work at my firm with only eight years of experience because they aren't ready for even that level of responsibility. Your party is as blinded by emotion as you are, and if your party should win in November the country will in short order be the worse for it. When the war comes home, will you fight?

No shit. Actually, I'd kind of forgotten the war was still going on. I was driving downtown the other day and ran into a big traffic mess because of some asshole protesters. I asked one of them, "What the fuck are you protesting now?"
This lady said, "Today's the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq."
"The war in Iraq? Is that still going on? I thought we won a long time ago."
Then she started in on human rights abuses and that kind of shit so I left her in a cloud of exhaust from my Hummer. But I checked the internet later on that night and sure enough, it's still going on. We're still over there.

I stopped reading at 500 billion to be honest. It became apparent you had no idea as to what you were talking about. I'd say I am somewhere above Einstein and slightly below the all elusive Fundamental theorem of everything science is trying so hard to find. Possible above it, I'm not sure as I'm too lazy to discover it.
-------------------------------
Of all the things to disagree with in my post, I find it pretty fucking astounding that you'd pick the cost. Is your head that far in the sand? How much do you think it's cost, Einstein, and where do you get your number? Do a google search on the topic and you'll find I'm right:
http://www.nationalpriorities.org/costofwar_home (500 billion)
http://zfacts.com/p/447.html (500 billion)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/16/AR2007111600865.html (a trillion)
http://money.cnn.com/2008/01/10/news/economy/costofwar.fortune/?postversion=2008011112 (500 billion)
etc. etc. etc.
The cost of the war is not in question. We're spending 10 to 12 billion a month on it, and have been for five years. And recall that the original estimate was less than 100 billion. Add that to the long list of lies you've swallowed. Have another cup of Kool-Aid, baby.

It was always obvious that skrap was a Bushie, especially with the arrogant smugness that radiates from his every post. You can tell when he labels his opponents "childish and boorish" when his ilk like Noodles call someone who disagrees with him "a fag". And with all his research, none of which he can produce. Very deep, very intellectual, very impressive. I am just shitting myself thinking what he will write next.
There is some basic research out there. A couple of facts....
1) The war was sold to the American public based on an imminent threat to the US due to Sadaam's WMD. This was the entire content of Colin Powell's speech to the UN. Every statement he mad has proven false. No WMD were ever found. No evidence of any threat by the Iraqi regime was ever found. For God's sake there were weapon's inspectors in Iraq at the time who could not find anything. And the nuclear weapons inspectors, the IAEA, had completed inspections and concluded Iraq was nuclear free. Despite this, the Administration made several "mushroom cloud" references.
2) The Pentagon cost estimate for the war was ~$50 billion. There was even the famous declaration by Wolfowitz that the "Iraq could potentially pay for its own reconstruction". An alternative view from a Pentagon staffer that the war could cost $200 billion and he was fired for this statement. Wolfowitz was made President of the World Bank until he was removed for favoritism involving his girlfriend. The war has cost $500 billion in direct costs thus far, contributed to the high cost of oil, and will potentially cost $1 to 3 trillion, including >$100 million in expenses for VA health and disability for the 30,000 badly injured but surviving US soldiers. While the currently growing economic mess was a consequence of the mortgage meltdown, a major contributor is the weakness in the US dollar and associated problems caused in part by our massive government debt.
3) The war itself has been not only a tactical mess, but a strategic disaster. You say you have "some issues" with how the war has been fought. This is a common comment from war backers; if only we had done it right things would be so awesome. It ignores the fact that this was a ridiculously complicated challenge no nation could pull off easily. But good tactics should follow good strategy. No realistic appraisal was ever made of blowback. Ultimately, the winner of this war is Iran; we have done them the greatest favor by removing a threat to them, one that they also thought might have WMD. Ultimately, Iraq will likely be an Iran ally. This intervention also ignored the fact that anti-Americanism would grow in the region, not contract, thereby allowing greater jihadist recruitment and eliminating any gains by direct combat. In Iraq, a US Army poll (those liberal hippies) found that 54% of Iraqis feel is it okay to shoot Americans, 85% want the US out immediately, and 99% strongly object to a permanent US presence on Iraqi soil.
4) The administration willfully led people to believe there was an association between the Iraqi regime and Osama Bin Laden and the 9/11 attacks. No such link was ever shown. Even you dishonestly suggest this when you say " I doubt it'd enter their minds until the war was brought into their yard again". Osama Bin Laden did not even like Sadaam, referring to him as "that socialist". What Osama Bin Laden did say was that he would get America to waste its "blood and treasure". In this he succeeded, by getting a slow-witted President to blunder into an unrelated war. Has it dawned on you that everything is going just the way Osama wanted it to? Perhaps this was his plan all along.
5) Where is Osama anyway? Conservatives like to say he is marginalized, hiding in some cave, but offer no evidence of this. He is almost certainly quite comfortable, not in a cave by any means, and thanks to this Administration, likely to die comfortably in his bed. Bush dropped the ball in Afghanistan, the war that actually mattered, so he could get to Iraq, which was never worth fighting for one plugged nickel or one soldier getting his thumb scratched
There are some emotion about wars, and people get mad. This is true, especially when we are going reach 4000 dead in a few days. Every life was wasted; it is all for nothing. I am sure you do support the troops in your way, but the best way to support them is to never send them on useless wars. The second best way is to admit a mistake and get out asap.
I am glad you "research, considered, and thought" about the issues, but I can't understand how you strayed so far from the truth.
So I conclude you are a fucking idiot. I am so glad you are on the other side. I wouldn't want a smug, pseudo-intellectual prick like you around.
I end with a prediction; I have been 100% right about the war thus far. Never got a thing wrong (I knew there were no WMD, I knew the war would become quagmire). I predict you clowns get buried in November, because the obvious incompetence of the last 8 years will be paid for. When that comes to past, I want you to remember who was right and who was wrong.

-----
Nope. 'Merican. And to be clear, I do have some issues with the way the war has been run but in general I support the President. I know, I know, it's not fashionable to do so since all the Vietnam protesters now have grandkids going to Iraq and it's easier to say "War Sucks" than to actually do anything about it. Once you get past the emotional aspect of the war and actually look at facts, there is a great risk to the Western way of life brewing in that part of the world. I am glad that the West is actively looking at and addressing that threat. I enjoy things as they are and as I have said before, I am unwilling to ignore that threat or allow it to destroy what I have worked for.
I did my time in the US Military, six years. I did not have to go to war because the war was cold at that time. Had it heated up, I'd have made steam to launch airplanes that dropped bombs that killed people. I'm glad it didn't happen then, but I am 100% behind those that are doing that job now because they are protecting the West from a very real threat. I wonder if those that would have us immediately withdraw would think that the war was over once the last soldier came home. Probably. I wonder if they'd be so pleased with the new 'peace' that they'd go live in that area. Probably not. I wonder if they'd even pay attention to what went on there after we'd left. I doubt it'd enter their minds until the war was brought into their yard again.
People like FilledWithHate allow their emotions and the horridly biased crap they watch on TV to form their opinions for them. It's easy: it means they don't have to actually research, consider, or even think. That's why I mentioned Michael Moore in my response to him - that fat slob is the grand poobah of the lowest common denominator.
I do not allow emotion and sensationalaism to form my opinions. I research, consider, and think. FilledWithHate is right; he'll not be able to dissuade me because I have researched, considered, and thought about the issue. In fact, the more he rants and spews, the more I'm glad he's on the opposite side of this issue. He just makes his side look the more foolish, childish, emotional, and boorish.
It's going to get worse before it gets better.

Such a post berays ignorance far beyond that of the average internet user.
The prime detraction to American Democracy is that, unfortunately, an educated and informed and well-constructed opinion is valued equally with mindless ignorant drivel. Fortunately, there are those who are capable of discerning between the two.

Hey FilledWithHate: thanks. You got your blood pressure all spiked up and started yelling and spitting on your monitor in your haste to respond, and all you managed to do was prove my point. Your vapid, hastily-arrived-at, liberal-TV-generated opinions on the subject are worth as much on Ubersite or in the voting booth as my more considered and founded ones. Your +2 cancels out my -2. Yippee. So now you can go back to masturbating to Micheal Moore propaganda films.
==================================
Yipee is right mother fucker; you can pretend your point has been "proven" or even reality. The fact is anyone who supports the most intellectually empty and stupid President in in US history tells us a lot. Intellectually you are nothing; the shows you watch are true propagandizing, and if you were not too narrow to ever look at international news you might see that. But you will not; it is Faux News, Wall Street Journal, and Rush all the way, isn't it, dude? I bet you even refuse to read the conservatives with the intellect and the balls to dis the President, like George Will or Pat Buchanan. But they probably use kind of long words for the Bushies, after all.
Tell me does this prove your point? How about now? I know your mind will never change no matter how much proof will leap in your face. That is why I say the world would be better without you. But it won't matter; your buddy Bush has destroyed the "Republican Brand" as they say. In November, it will all be over for you clowns, all but the shitty talk radio and retarded internet sites. Have fun with that and all your intellectual "proofs", dumbass.

A fight to the death was expected but the Japanese, lacking sufficient supplies and fearing an American attack on their base at Buna, began to withdraw.
The Australian advance was aided by the American 32nd Division which established bases to the south of Buna while the Australians pushed on down the Kokoda [Track] and across country from Wanigela.

Hall and Oates.
Heh.
I rather like early Chicago, though. Some great guitar work, there.
The point is: Your blaming us "insular" Americans for this shit, when your government is complicit, as well. "We" knew it was going to be a debacle, and *we* warned you. Not that it did any good. Your government went along for the ride, afraid to do shit-all against us. And I sure as hell didn't see much protest from you guys. There should have been. I've seen a whole hell of a lot more outrage on the part of the American people against their own government than I have seen Australians or Brits pissed off at their own governments. Bunch of fucking lap dogs. I would like to see some outrage against your own government. You're certainly seeing us Americans rage against ours. Or is this just the way it is? Too easy, man.
Yeah...we're an easy target. And I enjoy seeing it. Our government deserves it. *We* do not. *We* didn't vote for him. Until your ready to condemn your own government as it so richly deserves, indeed keep attacking our, but spare *us* your petty grievances. *You* are not going to be picking up the pieces. *We* will be paying the price for a long time.
Also, with regard to baseball. A good infielder should be able to catch a ball at 120 mph (on the ground or in the air), run quickly, hit a ball coming at 92+ mph (this ball might be curving down, or to the side, or might rise slightly), or at 80 mph (this ball could do anything); he has to throw hard and accurately; and he has to maintain situational awareness which is ever changing. An outfielder has to hit a ball 350 feet. A catcher has to sit on his haunches for three hours and catch more than 100 pitches coming at him at up to 100 pmh, seeing them through a mask. A starting pitcher should be able to throw a hundred pitches accurately ranging form 70-100 mph, making the pitches do all sorts of different things. (It hurts me to throw four at 65 mph.) Plus, the geometrics of the game are perfect.
A footballer has to run back and forth, kicking a ball.
I suppose it's so popular because among the unwashed masses because it's so stupendously simple-minded.
This week, I finished a 370-page report and a paper I have to give at a conference. I have some whiskey tonight.

Vidal sees the country in the grip of a corporate-oil patch-military oligarchy. Asked if the Iraq war was an oil patch-White House deal so huge Americans can't stand back far enough to see it, Vidal replied, "Kindly Dr. Goebbels used to say that the greater the lie a government tells (and repeats loudly), the more it will be believed. Yes, it is -- was -- about oil and, of course, giving the Cheney-Bush junta's friends like Halliburton vast contracts to rebuild what we have carefully knocked down."
He told NCR, "No one will ever see all the details but the [current] crookedness is unique in our history. Enron was the first storm warning but no one realized how easily accepted that cluster of capers would be by a polity marinated in corruption -- as Ben Franklin predicted, in 1789, as our eventual fate."

Cato, New York: In "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace", you touch upon the character-ization of Osama Bin Laden by the Bush Administration. In your opinion, does the Administration's more recent character-ization of Saddam Hussein follow the same motif as that established for Bin Laden? If so, what are the essential common elements of the character that Bush and company have attributed to Bin Laden and Hussein?
Gore Vidal: They don't really explain anything, since they refuse to tell us about our history with the Muslim world. What they did which was clever but probably fatal was to convince 70% of the American people that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11. He had nothing to do with it. He hates bin Laden and bin Laden hates him. This is the biggest lie Bush has gotten away with.

Gore Vidal: We are the United States of Amnesia, which is encouraged by a media that has no desire to tell us the truth about anything, serving their corporate masters who have other plans to dominate us. These wars are forgotten. The reasons for them are forgotten. We lost two wars - Vietnam and Korea. Many have forgotten that. Has the war-mongering placed the US in a position where there would be a serious loss in credibility if we do not attack Irag in the near future?
Gore Vidal: First, we have almost no credibility in the world to begin with. No need to fret about that.
The long-term consequences will probably be catastrophic for us. We're already in depression. We have the largest deficit in our history. The price of oil will go crazy during the war, which is not good for us or anyone else. We have nothing to gain and we have our economy to lose, not to mention what suicide bombers might be doing to us.
