"It's lonely at the top," he said, blowing grey smoke from between his teeth as he spoke. He looked her up and down as the smoke curled around his face, finally dissipating above his neatly cropped crew cut.
"You know, the top. Where successful people live. The top, where hard work finally pays off. The top, where it takes years to get to and moments to fall from." He took another hit and chucked the smoldering butt to the concrete next to her feet. Stepping forward quickly, he snuffed the burning ember out with the sole of his Bostonian.
She flinched as he did it, thinking he was going to hit her again.
He didn't.
He moved in closely though, forcing his face to within inches of hers. He stood a full eight inches taller and had to lean over considerably to do it. But he liked the feeling. He could never stand women who were taller than he was. It wasn't easy to intimidate a taller woman. As a matter of fact, he felt a little intimidated himself having to look up at a woman, any woman.
He didn't like the feeling. It made him want to eat glass.
As he moved closer to her, she took a small step back, then another. She could smell the smoke on his breath mingling with the sickly sweet aroma of Southern Comfort. She began to think that he was always drunk. She honestly couldn't remember a time when he wasn't.
She listened as he continued.
"You know what? I like looking down at them from the top. You know who I'm talking about, the idiots at work who think that their lives are really going somewhere. Can you fucking imagine the sorrow they feel when I fire them? Do you even have the smallest clue as to how humiliated they must feel when I kick their asses out the door? Do you ever wonder how they feel going home to tell the wife? God, that must be priceless."
She listened to him chuckle as he finished his thought and for a moment she thought she was going to be able to get away as he broke the lock of his gaze to her in order to look up at the night sky. She shifted a step to her left and as she did, he looked back down at her. She was hoping he didn't see it.
He reached to her and grabbed her by the throat, squeezing his fingers around her windpipe.
"It's nice and dark out tonight Clara, do you see how dark it is? Can you possibly begin to imagine how dark the rest of your eternity is going to be?"
He was squeezing harder as he talked. Clara was now looking up at the stars and trying not to throw up into the duct tape that was covering her mouth. She could feel her wrists starting to bleed as she twisted her hands trying to pull herself free of the handcuffs he had put on her roughly about three hours ago. The blood was warm and she could feel its slickness as it coated her fingers. Her gaze was shifted back to his as he released her throat and grabbed a handful of her hair, violently twisting her head back into full view of his face. She could see that the fire in his eyes was just beginning to heat up. She could see that his intent was more than just to scare her. She tried to regulate her breathing as he slowly moved her face closer to his. As he drew her even closer, he placed his cheek against hers and began to whisper into her ear.
"The top, Clara. It's lonely at the top," he said softly. She could feel the roughness as his five o'clock shadow scraped against the smoothness of her skin.
Suddenly he jerked her around and pushed her against the ledge. She could feel the coolness of the concrete against the front of her thighs as her skirt began to hitch up. She could feel him behind her, pressing himself into her as he placed his hands on her shoulders and bent her over the ledge. As she doubled over, a faint feeling of vertigo overcame her. She could see the lights of the passing cars below. To her they looked small like matchbox cars. She was mesmerized by how tiny they looked and by how far away all of it seemed. It was as if she were viewing it all through a lens covered in gelatin or cellophane.
It was then that she did vomit into the tape covering her mouth. As she did, he reached down behind her, put his arm between her legs, grabbed her crotch hard, and lifted. Her legs came up immediately and she could feel her weight shift forward.
She began to fall over the edge.
Her body turned in mid air as she fell away from the top of the building. She twisted in such a manner so that, as she fell, she was able to look back up at the top of the building, at him as he watched her fall.
"IT'S LONELY AT THE TOP CLARA!" He yelled to her as she fell past the fortieth and then the thirty ninth floors. When she reached thirty eight she could hear him yell, "YOU'RE FIRED!"
She wasn't really paying attention to him at that point though. She was too busy wondering what it would feel like to hit the street.
She didn't have to wait long to find out.

Where the hell have you been?
As the kids get older, my life becomes more hectic. It's harder to stay up late now and screw around on the computer because I'm always doing something with the kids. I regret not writing though. It is such a nice release for me.
